Curly/Freshy Rpt
Posted on June 21st, 2010 in Surf Reports.Disappointing!!! Swell period is a miserly 6 seconds, which means unless you’re an insect there’s barely enough grunt to propel any kind of craft. It’s also windblown & grey. Yuk! Go to work!
Grey then brightening up
Posted on June 21st, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Not terribly impressive looking at Dee Why this morning. There were showers about and the ocean was an unappetizing dull grey. And no one was in the water for the early that I could see.
The MHL buoy tells the story: swell is only about 1.5 metres from the south with an average period of just 7 seconds. The only bright spot is some 11 second period secondary swell. With luck that will deliver the odd bigger set at exposed spots. Wind is out of the south and is due to ease as the day goes along.
A mate from Surfrider working at Lennox, says that it’s not too flash up that way either. And judging from the MHL data, the small to near flat conditions prevail as far south as Eden.
The latest run of the wave models from the NOAA computers predict that the pattern of the last week or so is set to continue. The Tasman is reasonably active, but the energy is pretty much all on the eastern side (ie along the NZ west coast).
So, if it all goes as the models predict, the east coast is looking at another week – at least – of marginal to flat conditions. Winter has taken a pause apparently…
Oh well, keep on smilin’ and have yourself a great day.

A Whole Lot Better Than Nothing (HMB Jetty)
Posted on June 21st, 2010 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions. Although the naysayers were advising to skip surf check and sleep in, I found some fun little waves at the Jetty. Reasonably early for a Sunday morning although well past dawn, the wind hadn't come up yet, keeping conditions clean.Well How Good Was That, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on June 21st, 2010 in Byron.Yes folks the weekend crew finally scored, after many weekends in a row of average waves, it was cracking in Byron Bay today. Now those in the know were onto one of our lesser known spots today, and let me tell ya right now, it was all time. But I didn’t shoot it, and I’m not willing to say where it was, you’ll just have to look, because as far as we’re concerned it remains a secret. We still managed to find plenty of nice waves to shoot, and those who were on it, were loving it. The most repeated phrase I kept hearing from people was ‘how good is this?’ Well the answer is, it was as good as it looked; I surfed it, and had a ball, In Byron Bay Today.
Good morning for a beach clean up
Posted on June 20th, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Had hoped to see something into the surfable range this morning – but no such luck where Dee Why’s concerned. The average height of the swell at sea is still struggling to make the metre mark. The Bureau says it should be out of the SE, but the MHL buoy is showing the dominant direction as south and the average period is only a paltry 7 seconds. There appears to be some 9 sec component but I saw no sign of it when I took the picture.
I’ll have lots of time to study the lack of surf conditions as I hunt for rubbish with the rest of the Surfrider crew at Manly this morning (see story in news column right). We’ll be down near the Corso end of the beach and yours truly will be on a mission to find as many ciggie butts as possible. Simon Marnie of 702 ABC radio has promised to give Surfrider ten cents for every butt I remove from the sand. A butt bounty so to speak. If anyone is feeling generous and wants to join Simon, just use our feedback form link top right to tell me or, go public and post a response to this report below.
Gotta jam, so I’ll leave a discussion of the swell outlook for a post later in the day.

Tiny early
Posted on June 19th, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
No need to be up early on Huey’s account. His excellent works were nowhere to be seen at first light this morning in Sydney. A barely there mix of short period south and east swells were lapping softly at the sand as the sun broke free of the horizon. Surfing was out of the question.
The Bureau holds out hope for a gradual increase toward dusk. There just might be something into the waist high range before dark if we’re lucky. However, the wind is set to be strongly offshore during the afternoon, so I wouldn’t build up my hopes too much.
According to the Bureau and the swell models, there is the possibility of a little something into the waist to chest high range at spots that like east swell.
A little east swell to play in after a beach clean up would be just the ticket for the crew from Surfrider Foundation. We’ll be down at Manly to celebrate International Surfing Day by combing the famous sands for any rubbish we can find. The crew will be there from about 0800.
