Winter flatness upon us

Posted on June 18th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

As foretold by the swell models, we have utter flatness at Dee Why (and everywhere else in Sydney I’ll bet). As my picture from this morning shows, it was so microscopic that you couldn’t see so much as a rime of white around the rocks. It is a lake, plain and simple.

From what the Bureau says and from what the latest run of the models show, we’re not likely to have anything surfable until late tomorrow at the earliest. And even then it’s shaping to be just barely into the catchable range. There seems to be some hope for little waves on Sunday, but if we see waist high, I reckon we’ll be going well.

Outlook beyond that varies among the interpretations of the data, but absent the Goat’s thoughts, it looks to me as though early in the new week we could have a bit more energy…maybe into the chest high range if we’re lucky.

Have yourself a top old day!

Paddle for Pete

Peter Bilsborough Fundraising Event

Saturday 26 June 2010

A fun and important fundraising paddle is to be held for Pete Bilsborough following his life changing surfing accident over Easter. It’s open to anyone who can paddle ie. board paddlers, stand up paddlers, ski paddlers, board paddlers, surf boat rowers, outriggers, kayaks, canoes etc.

Peter Morgan, member of Avalon Beach Surf Life Saving Club, is hosting a Paddle at Palm Beach.  $35 per paddler (incl $5 for insurance).  The rest of the money is donated to Pete.  Cash Only.

On the Easter long weekend, Pete Bilsborough was involved in a tragic surfing accident.

Funding from this event will go towards treatment and modifications to Pete’s living arrangements when he eventually comes out of the intensive care spinal unit at Royal North Shore Hospital.

Pete and his family are mates of The Goat’s, so I’d like you all to help out.

Details

7.00am – 7.45am sharp -Registration: Pittwater side of Palm Beach, 200 metres north of The Boat House Cafe.

8.15am – Paddle Start: Rolling ocean 200 metres out from South Palmy break.

Course: around Barrenjoey Head into Pittwater.  1. to Palm Beach Pittwater side registration spot – 5 ks. 2. ditto via Mackerel and back to start at South Palmie – 10ks.

10.30am – Social Paddle and Demo: Pittwater side of Palm beach 200 metres north

of The Boat House Cafe. Boards will be available use for those who wish to demo any equipment. If you have paid registration in the race the demo is free. If not, to demo the boards for 45 minutes will be at the charge of $30.

All proceeds go to the Bilsboroughs.

Logistics: Best plan is to register before 7.45am at Pittwater side of Palm Beach as per above. Then drop your board/ boat/ board around to South Palmy. Then take car back to where you are registered so that it is there for you when you finish and then make

your way back to South Palm Beach (approx 10 minute walk, or 2 minute drive if you have someone to give you a lift back) to start the event.

Safety: It is advised that you wear a PFD when paddling, as it will be in the ocean, although use of a PFD is entirely up to the paddlers comfort level.

Weather: If conditions are looking bad, the call will be made Friday lunchtime, and all relevant websites will be updated. Course dependant on weather conditions.

After the paddle (one of which is social, one is competitive) there will be a stand up paddle demo and families and individuals can hire out boards and paddles to have a go. The charge for this is $30 per board (if you have already paid for race entry it is free. For families who would like to demo a board they pay per board not per person so they would generally all share one board).

Summer Breeze, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on June 18th, 2010 in Byron.

The light northerlies had it all feeling very summery in Byron Bay today. There were many folks out for a few slides before the wind came up, and all in all there was much rejoicing in the bay. The waves were a little slow but we saw a much welcomed slight increase in swell, and it was just ridiculously warm for a mid-winters day. No complaints here that’s for sure. It’s funny how weather like this seems to trigger memories of childhood, when we’d head for the beach on a warm winters day and risk a surf in boardies just for the sake of it. We’d usually end up blue and half frozen, but it was worth it just to feel the salt water on parts of the body that normally only get the touch of neoprene at this time of year. Such a day it was today, and the sense of well being was infectious. The end result, many crusty old salts walking around with big grins on their melons thanks to the summer breeze, In Byron Bay Today.

Marginal morning with a gale warning hoisted

Posted on June 17th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Situation is looking fairly dire it has to be said. Cloudy skies with a chance of showers and a land gale warning do not a pretty picture make. Even so, there were a few stalwarts paddling about in the knee to waist high conditions.

To the extent that it matters, the SE swell is a metre at six seconds. There’s some near 12 sec component in the mix though. However, it’s not adding anything obvious to the prospects. On an interesting related note, this morning’s marine forecast features both primary and secondary swell direction/height estimates. That is very cool. Now, if we could just get them to include the period info as well…

Latest outlook from the models is not too flash for our region. The current estimate is for it to stay small into the middle of next week – at least. The continental high seems set to bounce the wave generating systems away from our swell window for an extended period.

Oh well, it’s been a very good winter season thus far, so I’m sure Huey still has a few shots left in the locker.

Go well with your day one and all!
