Shark Surfing, In Byron Bay Today

Posted on June 17th, 2010 in Byron.

Bloke could be forgiven for thinking it’s not winter yet, sure it’s been a tad cold through the night of late, but how glorious was that weather, in Byron Bay today? We had the remnants of a small southeast swell wrapping past the cape, and few slides were on offer over most of the day. Although the crew all got a bit of a hurry up, as a good sized shark surfed through the lineup just after lunch. I got to say that a couple of the beginners out there don’t know how lucky they were. The big guy was heading straight at one woman in only a metre of water. Blissfully unaware she just happened to move at the right time, which is cool, because the shark refused to deviate from its course. Remember folks its whale season, and mullet season and that means it’s also shark season. Don’t panic but do be aware, and if you’re learning it’s best to stay in front of the SLSC at Main Beach during this time of year. Apart from that little hair rising moment, one couldn’t fault a glorious day, and so there was much rejoicing, In Byron Bay Today.

A few scraps left

Posted on June 16th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

As expected, the swell continues to fade toward its late week destination of flatness. Still a few waist high sets rolling in thanks to the SE direction and reasonable mix of 9-11 second swell. It’s only a metre at sea, so I reckon you’d be doing well to pick up much of anything above chest high.

After weeks of swell, it looks to me as though we’ve got ourselves a little flat(ish) spell coming up. Some of the models say we could get a little pulse around Sunday morning in Sydney, but from tomorrow to the middle of next week, the prospects are not too flash. Oh well, Huey’ll be back. We’re in his favourite season after all.

Go well with your plans and have a top old day!

Positively Negative (Cowells)

Posted on June 16th, 2010 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions. I started my drive to Santa Cruz in the pre-dawn twilight, but there were already a couple dozen surfers in the water when I arrived just after 6 am. Apparently I'm not the only one who knows that Cowells loves a negative low tide.
There were plenty of fun waves rolling through, and I sat inside of the packed main peak to get some of them all to myself. The difference between dawn patrol and a weekend afternoon is the increased skill level of most of the surfers, so I had to be patient, but I enjoyed a lot of fine long rides before it was time to leave for work. Great morning!

Surfline: Nice, clean little low tide longboard lines working through. WNW swell mix is building slightly as long-period SSW(195-205) groundswell mixes in at top exposures. Most spots see knee-waist high+ waves, while top breaks pull in some chest-shoulder-head high sets. Winds are light for mostly clean conditions as the tide drains out to a -1.3' low tide just after 7am. Buoy 46012: NW 8.9 ft @ 11.4 sec.

Experiences wanted: hip re-surfacing vs replacement

Posted on June 16th, 2010 in Can you help?, Top stories.

RealSurfer Brent asks:

I have be told that i need a hip re-surfaceing or a complete hip replacement and i am wondering if anybody out there has had one of these operations and got back to surfing again and was it successfully???

Please use the comments system (see below) to leave any responses to Brent’s question.

Fine, dry and cool on the Central Coast this Wednesday morning.  The swell is smooth and small at 1 – 2 feet from the east southeast.  There is a light west northwest breeze forecast to go north northeast later.  Low tide at 0520 and high tide around 1120.  Local barometer 1020 hpa, 5 degrees C. 95% humidity.  Have a good one!

Lazy Day, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on June 16th, 2010 in Byron.

Some days are diamonds some are stones and some are more like comfy old lounge chairs, in Byron Bay today. It was one of the latter today; the weather was glorious. The rain backed off revealing a stunner of a day, with small lazy log waves on offer in the bay. There were a few chunky bumpy peaks around the open side for the little white board set if you’re desperate. But in the bay itself, small log lines were the order of the day. Cool for a few cruising slides and a bit of a hoot and holler at your mates, fun, that’s for sure. Not particularly exciting, yet one of those lovely lazy winter days when it’s impossible to not be grateful for just being, In Byron Bay Today.

Going but not gone

Posted on June 15th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Quite a dramatic difference in the number of folks in for the early this morning at Dee Why. It’s a bit smaller than last night and looks a little less consistent, but as the photos show it definitely isn’t flat.

The swell’s around the 1.5 metre mark from the SE with an acceptable 9 second average period (and there’s some 11 sec component thrown in for good measure). If it’s in the chest high range at Dee Why, then you’d have to think there’d be a fair few other places that take SE doing similar things.

Outlook for the rest of the day is for the wind to swing around from the s-sw to the e-ne and for the present swell to gradually weaken. With any luck it’ll stick around in the barely surfable range through to tomorrow morning before it runs pretty much flat on Thr-Fri.

The current round of wave forecast models are showing a blip of swell at the weekend. At this stage the call is for something around about what we had yesterday or even this morning. Be nice for the weekend warriors amongst us if it plays out that way.

Speaking of weekend warriors, I’ve had on the photographer warpaint for the last few days now as I’ve set out to capture as many northern beaches surfers as I possible. Check the stories right to see if I got any of you!

Have a good one and go well with your day.

Fun waves are all gone, but the heat is not

Posted on June 15th, 2010 in South Carolina.

Hopefully you caught some of the 3+ fun wave on Monday. Besides the intense heat it looks like you could be in for another wave dry spell. But there may  be a  chance for your longboard in the morning before the winds shift.
