Overcast and mild on the Central Coast this Tuesday morning. The swell is smooth and small at 1 – 2 feet from the south southeast on the rise later.  There is a light southwest breeze forecast to go south southeast later.  High tide at 0900 and low tide around 1440. Local barometer is 1028 Kpa it is 11 degrees and 98% humidity.  Have a good one.

Light & Shadows, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on July 27th, 2010 in Byron.

Huey was feeling just a tad indecisive with the direction the weather was to take, in Byron Bay today. It was a case of light and shadows, calm and wind, sun and rain. All this was wrapped up in an utterly random pattern as we tried to work our way through a shoot in the bay. Mix this up with the fact that there was very little swell on offer, and it made for a very quiet day in Byron Bay. So very quiet in fact, that in the end we both had to send each other out for a few quick slides to make up the quota for today’s photos. Gosh, golly and geez I hate it when that happens, It’s such a bummer to be forced to go surfing for work J. But like they say, somebody’s gotta do it, and that somebody may as well be me, In Byron Bay Today.

It’s small on the northern beaches

Posted on July 26th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Well, there may be a metre of SSE swell out at sea, but with an average period of around 8 seconds, there’s nothing much showing. No bods were in the water at Dee Why that I could see when I checked it out this morning. There were some people at North Narrabeen for some reason that wasn’t instantly obvious. I’d say the biggest sets were struggling to get into the waist high range.

Latest run of the models is less than inspiring. Basically it looks like small, short period mainly south swell across the next week for the Sydney region. Indeed, it seems that the whole east coast faces this baleful regime of smallness. I hope this doesn’t mean that spring is arriving early…

There are still some big systems in the southern ocean, but they just aren’t getting to us. You’d have a better chance across the Tasman. Mahia looks good Wed-Thr…

Oh well, keep on smilin’!

Sydney Closed Waters, Pittwater, Port Jackson and Botany Bay:
Monday until midnight: Wind:West to southwesterly 5 to 10 knots tending south to southwesterly during the morning then tending south to southeasterly around midday. Winds light later in the evening. Waters:Smooth.

Wednesday: Wind: Light winds tending east to northeasterly up to 10 knots during the afternoon then tending north to northeasterly during the evening.

Funny morning of bumps, with the period see-sawing between pathetic windswell & stuff that pins you to the bank for a few seconds. Size is anything up to headhigh, direction is sth-east

Just junk now

Sure, it looks like you could catch a wave, a bit of trash is more like it. Folks carry the boards to the beach, and bring them right back to the car. Another couple days of the same broken record. SW – SE winds light in the morning and blowing above 15 mph in the afternoon. Nothing looks good for the week at this point.

Just Me & My Crew (Rachel’s Point)

Posted on July 26th, 2010 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions.
This morning Luke, Manabu, Steve and I had "Rachel's Point" all to ourselves, which made the session even more fun. The waves were inconsistent and again shifty but less scary-powerful than the last time, so today I tried to position myself in the short takeoff zone.

For a little while I was kooking it up. As I took a drop, I got distracted by a rock boil in the shallow water under my board's nose. So what did I do? I fell on it! Then I did a split on a cock-eyed landing, fortunately without injurious results. And Luke almost ran me over once (guess the red helmet isn't attention-getting enough). But then I got dialed in and things turned fun. I rode several fast lefts with fun drops, one head-high and another half a foot over my head (by Luke's estimate).

Luke's wife Beth took some video from the beach early on, and didn't get my best rides (it seems those are never recorded, except in memory).
I almost got a three-fer video with all of the guys riding in succession: Luke on a wave, then Manabu on the next... but Steve didn't catch the third one.
After an hour and a half, the rising tide started to kill the waves, so we called the session and paddled in. On the way I caught an interesting wave: as I started the drop, it broke on both sides of me, whitewater meeting in the middle when I reached the bottom. But hey, at least I caught one in!

Surfline: New SSW (180-200) energy fills in today, mixing with old SSW (190-205) swell and minor NW windswell. Expect inconsistent surf in the knee-chest high range early on, with bigger sets showing later today. Generally light wind on tap right now. Buoy 46012: SSW 3.6 ft @ 13.8 sec.

Sun Bay Slides, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on July 26th, 2010 in Byron.

Well Sunday, not really Sun Bay, in fact cloudy grey bay would be a more accurate description, in Byron Bay today. But where’s the fun in that? Slides on the other hand, although still small were in plentiful supply. The traffic had backed off considerably in the water after Saturday afternoon’s frenzy. So although a tad grey and wintery looking, it was peaceable kind of Sunday in the bay. A few well known faces turned, had a chat, and eventually gave in to temptation and stroked into a couple of Sunday slides, In Byron Bay Today.

The Sunday Post – 25 Jul 2010

Froze my butt off yesterday morning at Dee Why and again this arvo at Curly. Man that was a nasty wind and with no sun around when I was there I didn’t stand a chance. A Canadian complaining about the cold – who’d a thunk it! i can’t imagine what it was like in the water but from what I could see the punters were more concerned about catching waves than the weather.

Anyway, I did manage to pull off some shots some if you were at Dee Why between 8-930 on Saturday and 2-3pm today then have a look and see if I got you: http://www.wozthatyou.com/group7759.html

Hope you went well.

Cheers,

PICS: Curly Sunday, late morning

Our little SE swell was on the fade and the wind was going around to the south when I rocked up around 1100 with the Canon 5D MkII and 100-400mm. There were plenty of folks in the water despite the fairly ordinary conditions. If you were in the water in the middle part of the beach, have a look through, I might have caught your immortal moves!
