Dee Why: Some lines, new south swell, but not quite doing it.

Posted on July 20th, 2010 in Surf Reports.

New south swell arrived overnight but it’s not E enough to be much good at Dee Why Point. There are a few lines showing and the odd set but the direction and tide are making it less than attractive.  Whole beachie looks devoid of banks and pretty much all close outs. Might be better up by Longy when the tide comes up a bit.

Freshy/Curly Rpt

Saw bods out, but none doing any actual surfing. Bumps are plentiful, but a bit on the fat side meaning there’s a lot of scratching for pretty lackluster rides uinfortunately. It’s maybe waist-high

Cool & Windy

Posted on July 20th, 2010 in Central Coast, Surf Reports.

Windy, dry and cool on the Central Coast this Tuesday morning. Rain predicted later.  The swell is semi-smooth and small at 1 – 2 feet from the southeast.  There is a light to moderate west southwest breeze forecast to go strengthen later.  High tide at 0905 and low tide around 1550. Local barometer is 1004 Kpa it is 9 degrees and 81% humidity.  Have a good one.

Fauna Frenzy, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on July 20th, 2010 in Byron.

It just one of those days, ok so the surf wasn’t particularly cooking although it had some fun moments. But the wildlife was just going off at every opportunity in Byron Bay today. We actually had to spend some serious time editing down to the best few shots because we had too many photos of local fauna getting funky in the bay today. Maybe it was the warm air and northerly winds who knows. Yet the dolphins were playing the whales breaching the birds swooping and the Turkeys raiding as many backpacks as they could find. Whatever it was triggering the activity, it was fauna frenzy, In Byron Bay Today.

Very, very small, hardly there at all

Hello Friends,

Is your voter rego up to date? You’ve got until 8pm tonight to get your signed rego in. Here’s the AEC link. I liked the person on the radio who said, enroll to vote or your parents will decide who should run the country. ;-) Not sure if your rego is up to date? Check it here.

Okay, important stuff out of the way, now some more important stuff. My first morning back on the northern beaches, so I had a bit of a drive around to see what was what.

First stop was Warriewood. No one in the water there because the swell is just too weak and small. There were a few bods in the water at Cooks and another few up at Mona. In both cases the quality was okay, but it was struggling to make waist high. The sort of waves you go for when there’s pretty much nothing else on the to do list and you fancy getting wet for the exercise.

Next stop was over the hill at Northy. A touch better than the previous two, but nothing extraordinary as the small crowd confirmed.

Last stop was Longy where I got a snap of a couple standups messing about near the lagoon entrance and spotted a cute empty set wave down toward No Mans. There were maybe half a dozen bods between there and Dee Why, but as with elsewhere this morning, it’s inconsistent and bumping along at just above flatness.

If they have it right, the latest run of surf forecasts call for on again-off again 1-2 metre south swell. Nothing too great though because a lot of it is going to be short period stuff. Tomorrow arvo looks the best shot for south spots atm…

Have a great day!

Dee Why Afternoon Update 330pm. Even smaller than this morning

Posted on July 19th, 2010 in Surf Reports.

Nothing much happening at Dee Why this arvo. That photo of No-Mans earlier today must have been a single rogue waves, cause it’s just not doing its thing at the moment.  Mr. E and I had a decent lunchtime surf at Curly with some surprisingly good shoulder high sets for about an hour and some decent walls but as soon as the tide started to roll in it kinda stuffed it.

Mid-morning Manly

Posted on July 19th, 2010 in Manly.

Hello Friends,

Was down in Manly on an errand, so grabbed a couple snaps. Very little happening at the north end of the beach, but from about North Steyne south there were some little peaks getting pounced on by a modest crowd. Seemed fairly inconsistent, but not ridiculously so. Sets were into the waist high range.

It’s not actually completely flat, but it may as well be. Some gutless hoaxy lumps are sliding in & tricking people into believing there’s surf

Sunday late

Posted on July 18th, 2010 in Big Picture.

Hello Friends,

Well, that was fun. Drove from Hay to home in a day. As we set out I said to the family, “I wonder where we’ll see the first car with boards on top…” Turned out to be way earlier than I expected. Instead of somewhere near Sydney, I spotted a couple mals atop a serious looking long distance surf mobile in a tiny little town called Weethale. Between there and about West Wyalong we were only seeing a car every 10 minutes, so I was impressed. But here’s the kicker, we did not see any more boards after that. Not a one.

So anyway, how’s the outlook for tomorrow? Seems as though we can expect the westerly pattern to last but the models reckon the swell will die out overnight. Clearly there was more going on this morning than had looked like happening when I checked the situation last night. There was a lot more east than predicted so that, plus the 10s period, kicked some useful looking options in judging by the pics Doug posted from this morning at Curly. The longer period stuff is still showing up north at Coffs, but down south where the Bureau and the models say we should be getting stuff tomorrow, it’s looking very small. I’m punting on near flatness…

As usual under such circumstances, I hope to be proven spectacularly wrong. I’m hanging out to get wet after a week away from waves!

Go well and catchya tomorrow morning.
