Line Em Up Huey, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on July 18th, 2010 in Byron.

The general consensus in and around the bay was clear and concise. You couldn’t ask for any better than this, in Byron Bay today. Well not for a day bang smack in the middle of winter, that’s for sure. The water was warm and crystal clear, the weather sunny and pleasant. As if that wasn’t enough, Huey was lining them up one after another all day long in the bay. The crowds had disappeared as the school holidays came to an end. The little white board set were getting nice waves on the open side, while it was a case of logger heaven with a few nice lines for the groms as well in the bay. No wonder most folks were all smiles and looking pretty darn relaxed, In Byron Bay Today.

Ok folks On July 24th 2010 Nor-Cal Surf Shop will host the Third Annual Marine Mammal Surf Festival to raise money for the non-profit organization, Surfers for Cetaceans. Entry Is $50 per competitor for the chance to give back to what we all love by saving dolphins and whales from senseless slaughter in their own habitat.  If you can’t make it to California for the comp, donations of any amount are appreciated. Visit www.s4cglobal.org to make a contribution. Next; once again one of our crew, Jim, has suffered a nasty facial injury by a beginner in the crowd, who really should not have been there. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, beginners and crowds don’t mix. It really is that simple, if you learn to surf in a crowd, then you’re putting yourself and others at risk. For all the newcomers to surfing out there, read our learn to surf page, or at least pay attention to the following. To earn your place in a crowded lineup (ten surfers or more on any one break) a surfer needs to posses mastery of three fundamental skills. These are: Turning – Paddling – Wave Knowledge.

  1. Turning: To be able to turn your board confidently and accurately to avoid hitting another surfer without falling off.
  2. Paddling: To be able paddle wide out of the way of oncoming surfers. Avoid collisions and know how take the hit from the white water without ever letting go of your board.
  3. Wave Knowledge: To be able to accurately choose waves that you have the ability to surf without expecting to wipe out.

When you possess these three fundamental skills, then and only then you have earned your place in the lineup. If you do not honestly posses these skills, move to an un-crowded break where it’s safe for you and others to practice these fundamental building blocks of surfing, In Byron Bay Today.

Sunday prospects

Posted on July 17th, 2010 in Big Picture.

Hello Friends,

Fetched up in lovely Hay in the far west of NSW. But I’ve got net access and the evening is young, so I thought I’d make myself useful by having a look at tomorrow’s surf prospects for Sydney…

The wind is set to stay out of the NW all day, but from the look of the forecast models, it seems likely that whatever swell we had on Saturday, will slowly but steadily decline into the marginal category even at those beaches that like SE swell. A slight lift in the period from around 8 to about 9 seconds won’t be enough to counter the drop in average height from 2 metres out at sea this morning, to about a metre at dusk. There might possibly be something catchable at really exposed spots Sunday morning, but from the looks of things, it’ll be marginal to flat by dark.

The latest marine forecast (see below) says Sydney should still have NW winds on Monday when the models reckon it’ll be just about flat. Happily, whilst Monday looks to be a write-off at this point, there just might be a fresh south pulse for us on Sunday. Some of the predictions are going for shoulder to head high for Tuesday morning at south swell spots.

That’d be good!

Probably won’t be filing again until Sunday night – if not Monday morning. Go well!

Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Saturday until midnight: Wind: Light winds tending northerly up to 10 knots later in the evening.Sea: Below 1 metre.Swell: Southerly 1.5 metres.
Sunday: Wind: North to northwesterly 10 to 15 knots becoming northwesterly 15 to 20 knots by early evening.Sea: Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres by early evening.Swell: Southeasterly about 1.5 metres.
Monday: Wind: Northwesterly 10 to 20 knots tending westerly 10 to 15 knots during the morning then tending southwesterly 15 to 20 knots during the afternoon. Winds southerly 20 to 25 knots later in the evening.
Tuesday: Wind: South to southwesterly 20 to 30 knots decreasing to 10 to 20 knots during the afternoon.

The Saturday Post (!) – 17 Jul 2010

What a beaut winter’s day eh! Plenty of sunshine, offshore and a few waves to boot! It was great getting out and shooting again as a combination of a bit of a wave drought on weekends and tied to deskness syndrome during the week has yielded little in the way of photos so far the month of July.

But today all that changed! I got two sessions in at Curly and you can view all the shots here http://www.wozthatyou.com/portfolio106410.html and here http://www.wozthatyou.com/portfolio106411.html

Hope you caught yourself a wave or two!

Cheers,

Doug

Yippee! Get into it! Plenty of overhead bumps & favourable offshores. Plenty of people too, but I guess that’s the way it goes on a Saturday in school holidays

south swell spots the shot in Sydney

Posted on July 16th, 2010 in Big Picture.

Hello Friends,

From a very great distance it would appear the best plan today is to check your favourite south swell spot first. The steady light westerly is supposed to ramp up and swing SW but then to fade back later in the day. The swell peaked in the Sydney region during the night hours but if the numbers from the MHL buoy are anything to go by, there should definitely be something at the exposed places because there’s a couple metres of 8-10s south swell at sea.

Have a good one!

Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Strong wind warning.
Friday until midnight: Wind: Southwesterly 20 to 25 knots inshore, 25 to 30 knots offshore, decreasing to 15 to 25 knots around dawn then tending south to southwesterly 15 to 20 knots during the morning.Sea: Up to 3 metres decreasing to 2 metres around dawn then decreasing to below 1 metre later in the evening.Swell: South to southeasterly 1 to 1.5 metres.
Saturday: Wind: South to southwesterly 10 to 15 knots tending southeast to southwesterly up to 10 knots around midday then becoming light by early evening. Winds north to northwesterly up to 10 knots later in the evening.Sea: Below 1 metre.Swell: Southerly 1.5 metres.
Sunday: Wind: Northwesterly 10 to 15 knots increasing to 10 to 20 knots during the morning then increasing to 15 to 25 knots during the evening.

Bumps have swollen overnight to produce some headhigh sets at the swell magnet places. Chilly offshore are possibly making it look better than it is, though. The period looks a bit low, and consequently the waves don’t have that much grunt
