Oh So Pretty, In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend review.
Posted on August 29th, 2010 in Byron, Surf Reports.
Oh so pretty and witty and wise, and I pity any girl who isn’t,,,, oops sorry about that, channelling Westside Story for some bizarre reason, in Byron Bay today. Hmm could be a mixture of lack of sleep and a decent dose of gold old fashioned middle aged madness. Whatever the cause, it matters not. What does matter is regardless of all the calls we had from surf reporters about there being no surf to be had in the bay this last week. The truth is, there were waves, and although small and a little harder to find than usual. They were pretty and well worth paddling into for a bit of fun. Fact is those who make the effort to get out and look beyond where the video cameras point, usually score, In Byron Bay Today.
Gray Drizzly Dawn (Cowells)
Posted on August 28th, 2010 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions. I figured Cowells would be decent on the low tide early this morning. Trouble is, a whole lot of other people figured the same thing. When I drove past in the dim pre-dawn light, I could already see a small clot of surfers in the water. By the time I'd suited up and paddled out, they numbered two dozen, and within half an hour the pack had swollen to more than 40. Why so many folks came out in the chilly misty dawn is a mystery. There were more waves to go around yesterday afternoon at 38th Ave, and it was warm and sunny.I sat on the inside and took scraps discarded by the crowd, mostly rights with a few lefts, a lot of them gutless waves that couldn't hold up to the beach. I partook of one better party wave with five others, riding in sync behind the rightmost surfer, and congratulated the guy next to me when he managed to stay up on it longer than the rest of us (and just a bit farther than me).
Surfline: Knee to waist high, poor to fair conditions. Mostly clean, workable little lines for the small wave gear. SSW-S (180-200) swell fades through the day as some small NW windswell energy mixes in. Better breaks are good for knee-waist-chest high surf, as top exposures are in the shoulder-head high+ zone, with some occasional sets running slightly overhead. Conditions are mostly clean with light winds early and a low incoming tide. Buoy 46012: (Wave) SWELL: 4.6 ft at 14.8 s S / WIND WAVE: 8.5 ft at 9.1 s NW / WVHT: 9.5 ft / APD: 6.7 s / MWD: 320° / (Met) WSPD: 19 kts / GST: 23 kts / WDIR: 310.0° / ATMP: 56.1° F / WTMP: 56.8° F.
A lot of hype about a swell not yet here.
Posted on August 28th, 2010 in South Carolina.Head high plus by Sunday they predict. Lots of surf. I say, maybe not ridable. While a Cat 4 hurricane 1200 miles off the coast will produce some swell, I am more concern about the strong E winds that are going to really be pushing this swell into a frothy mess. Some models say 9 feet by late Sunday, but again this may be a 5 foot storm pushed up by the wind which not only can be sloppy, but very unpredictable. So my forecast is this. Saturday the swell starts and the winds are already at 20 mph. Not good. Sunday, bigger waves, but the same strong wind…good luck. My best bet will be sometime after Monday clean up conditions may improve IF the winds have dropped.

Finally same waves…
Posted on August 28th, 2010 in Longy.Hi all, Long reef is about 2 – 3 foot this morning with the back bombie breaking and that left hander out in front of the lagoon still there. It is a bit bumpy this morning and the wind is from the SW. some waves to be had. don’t miss out.
Dee Why: A few waves–swell on the rise.
Posted on August 28th, 2010 in Surf Reports.Nothing to get too excited about at this stage, but there are a few waves around this morning. About a dozen punters on the Point at 0800 with some waist to chest high sets but it’s pretty slow and gutless for the most part. Should be bigger this afternoon but expect to see it accompanied by 15-20 knots of SSW wind.
Not flat, but not big either
Posted on August 28th, 2010 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
The good news is that it’s not flat at spots that pick up south swell. As expected, the swell started picking up late last night and this morning Huey’s got the settings for his new south pulse at a couple metres with an average period of 9 seconds. From the look of the other MHL buoys, Sydney’s currently getting the peak energy. High tide is at 1000-ish and low is around 1600.
As things got started this morning, there were only four or five in the water at Dee Why point and then another couple in the beach break. Chest high sets were turning up reasonably regularly but the swell looks a bit too south for the Dee Why end. I’ll get out and about for a look elsewhere soon and I’m expecting it to be a bit stronger at the exposed spots.
The wind call is still for it to go around to the south this afternoon (when the swell is set to peak), so it looks like this morning is really your best bet for the best combo of size and clean-ness.
With luck the forecast will play out as expected and there’ll be waves of some description at south spots right through to Monday morning.
Have yourself a good one and say hi if you happen to see me shooting. BTW, I’ll try to remember to tweet my shooting location.

Flat with extra flatness at Dee Why
Posted on August 27th, 2010 in Surf Reports.Hello Friends,
What’s the opposite of super-size me? Well, whatever it is, that’s what we’ve got this morning at Dee Why this morning. As the day kicks off our little mate the MHL waverider buoy out to sea from Sydney is showing about 0.5 metres of 5 second period south wind chop.
The latest run of the WAMs for our region is calling for the flatness to last through Friday. Happily they’re also still showing 2-3 metres of south swell filling in to the central region of the NSW coast from about midnight. The Bureau seems to agree in their latest forecast and the call is for the wind to go hard today before easing overnight and being w to sw for the early tomorrow (when the tide will be coming in to a 10am high. However, the latest calculations show the wind turning southerly as we get toward mid-afternoon.
Here’s hoping!
Have yourself a top old Friday one and all.

Bright Sunshiny Day (38th Ave)
Posted on August 27th, 2010 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions. Crowded and sectiony but I got some fun ones. Plus it was so warm that I left my gloves on the beach. And now to sleep, perchance to dream of waves, and to be ready for dawn patrol!
