Hallelujah, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on September 23rd, 2010 in Byron.

Finally, Huey saw fit to let a little sunshine through, and not a moment too soon for most folks in Byron Bay today. Everyone was into it, the day started off bleak and rainy. But by mid morn the clouds parted to let through some seriously needed blue, and there was much rejoicing. We had some swell, some sun; some fun with good people and just a few crazy crowd moments. But hey, it is school holidays so that’s to be kind of expected. We had a little two meter shark hanging around the crowd most of the afternoon. Giving those in the know a bit of hurry up, while others were blissfully ignorant to what lurked beneath. All in all, a great day to be alive, In Byron Bay Today.

That’s Wednesday done

Posted on September 22nd, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Still some wave energy around as the sun sinks in the west. The surface conditions were pretty ordinary though. A light east breeze has been messing it up since late morning and from the look of the latest forecast, it’ll be up to it’s naughty tricks again tomorrow.

Swell’s out of the south at a couple metres right now, but it’s getting a little push thanks to the 10-12 second average period. I got in the water at the point for a bit and managed to jag a few fun ones. Sets were coming along in the chest to head high range at reasonably regular intervals and the aforementioned push was welcome. (My camera was playing up, so although I shot a fair amount, the results aren’t all that interesting sadly.)

I reckon it could drop overnight because the average periods have started going down since about midnight at Eden. They’ve dropped into the 8 second range there, so if that flows through to us (as seems pretty likely), tomorrow could be smaller and weaker than today. However, if the models have it right, there should still be surfable options at south swell spots (that onshore will be an issue of course)

High tide tomorrow will be around 0800 and low will be about 1400.

Weather Situation from the BoM

A series of lows are passing through the southern Tasman Sea, with associated cold fronts extending northwards towards the NSW coast. One of these will pass along the southern NSW coast later today, and is expected to reach the Sydney coast overnight. A persistent ridge of high pressure over NSW is gradually extending further eastwards and will bring easing winds and afternoon coastal sea breezes.
Forecast for Wednesday until midnight

Winds: East to northeasterly 5 to 15 knots. Seas: Below 1 metre. Swell: Southerly 2 metres.
Forecast for Thursday

Winds: East to southeasterly 5 to 10 knots tending northeasterly later in the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre. Swell: Southerly about 2 metres.
Forecast for Friday

Winds: North to northwesterly 5 to 10 knots tending north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots around midday then tending north to northwesterly 10 to 20 knots later in the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing up to 1.5 metres later in the evening. Swell: Southerly 1.5 metres.
Forecast for Saturday

Winds: West to northwesterly 10 to 15 knots tending southeast to southwesterly up to 10 knots during the afternoon then tending northeast to southeasterly during the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre. Swell: Southerly 1.5 metres.

Waves once more

Posted on September 22nd, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Somewhat lumpy and junky looking this morning for the early, but with luck it will tidy up a little before the afternoon NE’r gets going. Sets at Dee Why were into the shoulder high range at both the point and the beachy. Swell is still out of the south at around the two metre mark with an average period in the 10 second range. Reasonable number of bods on it too, but not significantly more or less than the last couple days. A bit busier than usual maybe as we are running up to school holidays.

Basically, if you stick to yesterday’s script, you should find something similar again today. Outlook is for the quality to run down from about lunch time as the onshores roll in.

Outlook is for marginal conditions tomorrow as the wind gets into an e-se pattern, but the Bureau says there should still be a couple metres of south swell, so at least it shouldn’t be flat everywhere as well.

Longer term it seems as though we’re drifting toward small conditions by next Monday. However, between now and then, there should be something sloshing around for the keen.

Go well with your day!

Tides: H @0730, L @1325

PICS: Newport Sat 18 Sep 2010

After shooting at Avalon, I stopped by Newport to watch a goodly crew chasing some fun size waves near the pool. In the end I managed to come away with over a hundred shots. If you were out in the middle part of the day, you should have a look at the gallery – there’s a good chance I got some of your fabulous stylings. ;-)

Second day of the big south swell and I decided to head up to Avalon for a look. Some good size sets coming in and a hardy crew were on it. I set up in front of the SLSC and fanged off a few frames of the action which I’ve now put into a gallery. Check ‘em out!

A much anticipated south swell arrives with offshore winds and really lights up Dee Why point. I was down there to test out a Nikon D3S and a couple lenses. Some very nice waves came through and I pretty much got shots of anyone who caught a wave…

Click, Rewind, Replay, In Byron Bay Today.

Geez I don’t know about this, I reckon Huey may well be getting a tad lazy, in Byron Bay today. For the last few days it’s if the big guys just gone, nah I couldn’t be bothered. Click hit the pause button, rewind it, and play the same day again in the bay. This rain seems to have really settled in, the wind has been blowing from the same direction for many days now, and the crowds are pretty much staying about the same level each day in the bay. Either it’s a replay of the last few days or I’ve been having a recurring dream, and am about to wake up to find it’s Sunday morn and not Tuesday night, In Byron Bay Today.

A few waves about this morning

Posted on September 21st, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Once again the plan for Tuesday is to get to the beach as early in the day as you can. Wind is offshore for the early but by lunchtime, those onshores will be cutting in and trashing any place with south exposure.

Swell is still out of the south at around the two metre mark with an average period of 10 seconds.

High tide in Sydney was around 0700 and low will be around 1245.

Outlook for tomorrow continues to be for a brief pulse as the period gets longer and the swell continues in the two metre range. The problem is that the wind could be out of the easterly quarters, so it might be a case of finding a protected north corner.

Weather Situation from the Australian Bureau of Meterology

A series of lows are passing through the southern Tasman, with associated cold fronts extending northwards towards the NSW coast during the next few days. The fronts will bring southerly changes to the NSW coast on Tuesday and later on Wednesday. A persistent ridge of high pressure over most of NSW will be associated with winds easing on the northern parts of the coast from about midweek.

Forecast for Tuesday until midnight
Winds: West to northwesterly 5 to 10 knots tending south to southwesterly up to 20 knots around midday then tending southerly 20 to 30 knots during the afternoon. Winds decreasing to southerly 15 to 20 knots later in the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Southerly about 2 metres.

Forecast for Wednesday
Winds: Southeasterly 10 to 15 knots tending northeasterly up to 10 knots around dawn then tending northeast to southeasterly up to 15 knots during the afternoon. Winds tending east to northeasterly up to 10 knots later in the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre. Swell: Southerly 2 metres.

Forecast for Thursday
Winds: South to southeasterly 5 to 15 knots tending east to southeasterly up to 10 knots during the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre. Swell: Southerly about 2 metres.

Steely Slides, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on September 21st, 2010 in Byron, Surf Reports.

The weather is showing no signs of backing off just yet, so it was more rain, wind, cold and a few fun steely grey slides, in Byron Bay today. The surf was kinda fun that’s for sure, but it’s not really quite as good as it looked. There are some holes in the bank at the moment, and that’s creating sudden dead spots in the lineup. It’s really hard for the little whiteboard set at the moment, and only just slideable on a well trimming log. However that and the inclement weather certainly didn’t stop folks from getting out amongst it and making the best of what’s on offer. Truth is when it’s still that pretty on a cold grey day, who could really blame them for wanting to be, In Byron Bay Today.
