Slumbering Huey sighs out a few tiny ripples

Hello Friends,

Dear oh dear. It looks to me as though we’ve slipped another cog toward flatness this morning. I couldn’t see anyone in the water trying to catch waves at Dee Why when I checked the situation this morning. A glance at the latest data from the MHL Sydney buoy is showing we have a faint SE windswell out at sea. It’s around the metre mark, but the period is only 7 seconds.

Sadly, the charts are not a happy picture this morning either. It’s really looking like flatness or near flatness for the entire east coast right through this time next week. And the long range projections aren’t currently showing any substantial change. A couple of the riffs on the NOAA data are pointing at a little uptick at south swell spots for Sunday morning, but that’s currently about it for the hopeful indicators.

If you really want solid waves today, I’d head off to south Africa’s western region. Looks pretty impressive on the swell map at the moment :-)

Go well with your day!

Kelp Slalom (38th Ave)

Posted on October 22nd, 2010 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions. Although the late afternoon low tide was probably perfect for Cowells, westside Santa Cruz has been taken over for an entire week by the Coldwater Classic surf contest. Grrr. So we ended up doing the kelp slalom on the eastside.
Luke brought the latest addition to his quiver, a 7'0" Ward Coffey, a remarkable $75 Craigslist find. It's probably similar to the custom board Ward is shaping for me right now, although I think a bit narrower, so I was eager to try it out and swapped him for my 8'3" as soon as he joined me and J-Bird in the lineup. I caught a few short rides with it, and I can't wait to get mine - it's going to be fun!
Pleasure Point from the water at 38th Ave
Back on Magic, I got a lot of long fun rides, both lefts and rights. J-Bird and I shared one right, while Luke paddled his new stick all the way to Pleasure Point to try for some bigger waves. The water was so clear that I had a fascinating glimpse of the world beneath the waves as I flew over the kelpy reef, turning to avoid the thickest clumps of seaweed. As I paddled back out after a nice left, a harbor seal popped up 10 feet away and stared at me with wide eyes before ducking under a wave.

We stayed out until the sun set and it was getting hard to see the surf. Had the clouds parted to let the nearly full moon shine down, the session might've gone longer, although a light breeze was chilling in the dim twilight.

Surfline: A fun sized mix of holding mid period and new/building NW swell is on offer this afternoon as some minimal SW-SSW swell mixes in. Most breaks are good for waist-chest-head high surf, with top exposures pulling in some overhead+ sets. Winds remain light offering up mostly clean conditions as the tide heads for a 4:30pm low. Buoy 46012: (Wave) SWELL: 6.6 ft at 14.8 s NW / WIND WAVE: 1.0 ft at 2.9 s SSE / WVHT: 6.6 ft / APD: 9.8 s / MWD: 314°

Nice but small again.

Beautiful conditions this morning.  Water nice and clean and about 19C.  Swell from the SE but knee height at best.  Very light winds turning to the NE.  Fun waves, I even had a few.  Enjoy. Surf Photos of You

About the same, maybe a touch smaller

Posted on October 21st, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

The swell’s gone a bit more to the SE in the last 24 hours, so there just might be a few more small offerings around the place this morning. We have a low tide around 1300 today, so tide’s running out all morning. According to the MHL data for Sydney, the average heights are around the one metre mark out at sea and the dominant period is about 8 seconds. This should translate into waist high plus sets at the best exposed spots.

Wind’s set to be light through the morning, but gradually picking up from the NE and getting up to a fairly typical afternoon setting of 15-20 kts.

That’s the good news.

The latest run of the models it has to be said is looking pretty bleak for waves. According to some of the predictions it will be small to flat for at least another week. There are some estimates of okay (to chest high) around Sunday. Sure hope the optimistic reckonings are the right ones!

Onward and into spring we go…

Have a top old day.

Not a lot of action down here. Knee-high, similar to the northside

Full and 1 foot.

The high tide (7.54am) is making the waves hard to find at Long Reef this morning.  Ankle height at best.  Wind offshore early and will go NE later in the day.  Get the longboard out and wait for the low tide.  Enjoy  Surf Photos of You.
