Sun is back again and with a few little waves too

Posted on October 20th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

ARVO UPDATE: went for a splash at Curly this morning and can report you didn’t miss much. Biggest waves were working hard to make waist high and they didn’t have a great deal of energy. Still, it was a beautiful morning and good to be in the water, so I’m not complaining. Seemed to be a fair amount of algae in the water, but no sign of bluebottles. Water temp felt cool, but it wasn’t an issue really. By midday the expected NE’r had come up and the conditions were not helped much where we were surfin’ (toward the south end). I didn’t get any interesting pics really, but here’s one all the same….

Earlier I wrote:

Quite a difference from yesterday eh? Wind’s now lightly offshore and there’s a weak but catchable south swell in the waist high range showing at Dee Why. It doesn’t look terribly special, but at least it’s something. And, from the look of the models, today’s about as big as it’ll get for at least the next week. It’s spring. What can you say?

A close examination of the latest run of the models suggests that there is a long period but small pulse in store for us around Friday. It doesn’t look like lasting too long and it could mostly hit at night, but there might be something into the chest high range at spots best tuned to the period/direction combo (which currently looks like being mainly from the SE at around 15 seconds, but only 0.5 m).

Fingers crossed on that one!

Go well with your day!

Lovely day (when I looked) but the offerings are pretty small & a bit on the weak side. DY & Curly seemed to be getting the most rideable stuff, maybe kneehigh plus and best for longboards

Overcast, small and smooth waves this morning.

Small but offshore early.

The swell is only about 2 foot from the SE this morning.  Wind from the W but is expected to turn NE during the day.  Not much going on early.  Surf Photos of You

The Best of June 2010 In Byron Bay Today.

What’s with the gloomy skies?

Posted on October 19th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Your correspondent is just emerging from jetlag land, so apologies in advance. Came in yesterday morning to a beautiful, if cool spring day with some small but surfable south swell. And then this morning rolls around… all heavy grey clouds, showers and SE wind. What’s worse is that the metre plus of SSE swell has weakened from an average period of nearly 10 seconds yesterday afternoon, to a ghastly and gutless 6-7 seconds this morning. Blergh!

Some of the models are calling for a very brief (less that 12 hours) south pulse to hit us later today, but looking at the energy levels reporting in from the buoys off to the south of Sydney, I can’t see any evidence of it. And, since the wind is set to stay se to southerly all day, you’d have to be pretty hopeful to think you might score something later. After three weeks of southern California microness, I’m hanging out for something surfable, but, sadly, I can’t see anything much in our immediate future. Just more spring dolodrums.

About the best near term hope for Sydney surfers could be tomorrow morning when the greyness should lift and the winds could back off enough to leave us some possibly catchable little items at south facing spots.

It’s great to be back home once more and though it’s not too inspiring right now, by the end of Tuesday, we’ll be a day closer to when Huey next slings us something fun! Go well.

Weather Situation

A high pressure system near the Bight is slowly moving east extending a ridge to the northern Tasman Sea.A weak cold front will move across the southern Tasman Sea during Tuesday bringing a south to southwest change along the New South Wales coast. The high is expected to move over the western Tasman Sea on Wednesday and then to move slowly towards New Zealand.
Forecast for Tuesday until midnight

Winds: Southerly 15 to 20 knots tending south to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots by early evening. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres. Swell: Southerly 1.5 metres.
Forecast for Wednesday

Winds: South to southeasterly 5 to 10 knots becoming light during the morning then tending east to northeasterly up to 10 knots around midday. Winds increasing to east to northeasterly up to 15 knots during the afternoon. Seas: Below 1 metre. Swell: Southerly about 1.5 metres.
Forecast for Thursday

Winds: North to northeasterly 5 to 10 knots becoming northeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon then increasing to 10 to 20 knots during the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing up to 1.5 metres during the evening. Swell: Southerly 1 metre.

Dee Why: Grey and small, but not flat

It’s not exactly what you’d hope spring would be like, but however we’d like to forget, it’s typical for October in Sydney: Summertime one day, winter the next. Two punters on the Point hooking into a few waist high relatively mushy ones, but they do seem to be having a bit of fun.  The charts are suggesting a steady decline in swell over the next few days so if you’re keen to get a wave in in the near future, you might want to consider sooner rather than later.  Saw a couple of whales out behind the Point earlier this morning but they were gone before I could get the camera set up. I suspect that this’ll about the end to whale sightings as they head south for the summer. Cheers, Rob

More Changes, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on October 19th, 2010 in Byron.

Well folks it’s that time of year again already, in Byron Bay today. Seems like only yesterday that we had to focus on site maintenance for a week, I wish it was then we wouldn’t need to do it now J. But according to our records it was nearly six months ago, yoicks a lordy how time flies. So for those new readers out there here’s the deal. We’ll be putting up the ‘best of’, for each month from May till September. This is based on the images you guys have clicked on the most. While we’ll do this, we’ll also be doing a whole heap of site maintenance. So don’t be surprised if a few things disappear and news things turn up at random, it’ll all make sense soon enough. We’ll be dropping old stuff that’s no longer relevant, and adding a whole lot of new things for you to get your teeth into. But more about that later, in the mean time here’s the best May 2010 as you requested them by clicking on them, In Byron Bay Today.

Bombie still has size 3 – 4 ft

Posted on October 18th, 2010 in Long Reef.

The Bombie still had some size late this afternoon 3 – 4 foot.  Conditions were almost perfect with a nice northerly blowing and the sun shining.  I managed to get a few pics of suck up.

Dee Why: Beautiful day, a few small waves

Posted on October 18th, 2010 in Surf Reports.

Do dial up the expectation meter too high and you could have some fun out there. Dropped off significantly from yesterday but there are still a few waves around.

Here’s about what you can expect from the Point and the Beachie at Dee Why today. Though, go now if you’re keen. 15knot southerly forecast for later.
