THE surfing world is in mourning with reports that three-time world champion Andy Irons is dead.

ESPN website claim sources close to the Hawaiian have confirmed the shocking news which has begun to reverberate around the globe.

The cause of death is yet unknown but surfing websites have suggested Irons was battling a severe bout of dengue fever.

Irons missed his Round 1 and 2 heats at the Rip Curl Search Puerto Rico stop on the ASP Men’s World Tour on Saturday due to illness and was travelling back home when the 32 year-old was deemed too ill to travel on his connecting flight from Texas to Hawaii and was grounded there.

Unconfirmed reports say that he passed away in his Dallas hotel room.
