More marginal mush

Posted on November 26th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

We might get another round of late arvo wind swell because the NEr is due to kick in on the usual schedule.

Have to run, but will try to update later on today…

Go well!

Slightly more energy on Thursday morning?

Posted on November 25th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Maybe it’s just my imagination, but I think I can detect a slight improvement over the last few days. Dee Why seemed to be just a touch bigger this morning. Instead of knee high, the average ones look to be a bit closer to waist high. Okay, I admit that it’s not much of an uptick, and maybe it’s really just my hopeful nature, but the better exposed spots could be picking up something into the chest high range. Quality is strictly agricultural because with an average period of around 7 seconds, it’s really only wind swell.

According to the Bureau, the latest outlook for the Sydney region is very like yesterday, ie NErly wind building up in the afternoon into the 20-30kt range.  That will push a little more energy into the system and by dusk, if you’re not too picky about surface conditions, there should be occasional chest to head high sets at exposed spots (ie where the onshore is strongest).

The cycle’s on rinse and repeat, so tomorrow could be a replay (more or less) of this morning. And right now, the forecast models basically say we’re in for the same again on Saturday. And, looking at the latest run of the WAMs, it appears that the our region of the east coast will continue to miss out on most of the energy coming out of the southern ocean. A persistent and strong series of highs are deflecting everything over to NZ, leaving us with wind swell scraps.

Oh well, what can ya do but enjoy the day for what it is. Stay happy!

An afternoon sesh at Northy

Posted on November 25th, 2010 in North Narrabeen.

Hello Friends

Bit of an afternoon update for ya. Got tired of staring at the computer and decided I was gonna get wet no matter what. Tossed up between Curly and Northy and ended up going to the latter. Got there and found that the wind had, as expected, pushed up a small and junky little wind swell. Nothing to write home about, but when I rocked up there were around 20 people in the water.

A few minutes later I was paddling out to join ‘em. Yikes! There were some cold patches in the ocean. Glad I had the springy on. Got out the back and went into the wind swell zone – you know the deal, just sitting there thinking thoughts and waiting for something with a trough in front of it. Every once in awhile one such would appear and it wasn’t long before I jagged myself a sample. Although slow, the low tide was giving them a little more push so if you were in the right spot it was sorta like regular surfing. If not… well, then it was mush riding.

Funny thing happened too. The crowd just sorta melted away until there were only two or three of us sitting on the outside peak at any given moment. Sunny afternoon, little waves and one of the world’s most famous beaches was looking like some kind of secret spot up/down the coast. Gotta love it when that happens.

After hooking into a couple funish rights I picked up a relatively long left and headed in. As I got out and looked up the beach there were half a dozen others getting out as well. We left Northy very uncrowded.

Driving home it was nice and warm. My skin was kinda tight from the salt and they were just going to tea at the cricket with us and the poms pretty evenly poised.

Felt like summer.

Maybe 6 inches more size than the previous few days. Otherwise, conditions as usual

Tiny again

Posted on November 25th, 2010 in Long Reef.

Only about 1 – 2 foot this morning.  The swell struggling to get around the reef so the northern end is very small but protected.  Waves will be bigger towards Dee Why but when the wind picks up the quality will drop off.  NE wind expected to be fairly strong and the windswell will get a little bigger during the day.  Enjoy Surf Photos of You.

Mix Nuts, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on November 25th, 2010 in Byron.

It’s the same old story, if you get to the bowl too late; someone has already polished off all the cashews, and so it was with the waves, in Byron Bay today. The window of opportunity was small. If you missed it, it was just like that old bowl of mixed nuts that everyone avoids at a party. Look at it long enough, it starts to look enticing, but after you’ve spent a few minutes rummaging around, you quickly find it’s a lot of work for very little reward. The sweep is still on in the bay, and it’s on in a very big way. The pinball is still claiming victims, far too many, in fact. Even crew that we know, know it well, got sucked through the rocks today. To those we witnessed going through the ordeal, we hope came out of the experience ok. The good news is the sand is moving again, so who knows, maybe the old bowl of mixed nuts will get recycled into something a bit more tasty, In Byron Bay Today.

Weak Wednesday

Posted on November 24th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Yep. Still small to nearly flat. Wind swell this morning is out of the NE. It’s maybe a metre out at sea, but the average period is around the 6 second mark, so it’s going to be another day of feeble and tiny conditions better suited to swimming or snorkeling than surfin’. Dee Why is a good for instance. There are a reasonable number of folk in the water as I write this before 0700, but they’re struggling to find anything above about knee high.

The forecast is calling for an increasing NE’r in the Sydney region today. 25-30kts of wind should be enough to push up some junky chest high sets at exposed spots for the late. Tide’s going to be high around 0930, so those bigger wind swell waves this afternoon will be hitting under low tide conditions. Given the prolonged period of microness (and therefore very uniform banks), that will probably mean lots of shutdowns in the mix. Nothing too unusual in that I guess, we are heading into summer after all.

Long range outlook remains much as it has been for the Sydney region – ie generally marginal to small, short period NE wind swell. Hey, what can ya do but keep on smilin’!

Go well one and all!

Ugh! Pack a snorkel. What’s above the water is just too disappointing for words

Tiny……

Posted on November 24th, 2010 in Long Reef.

Another day of small surf at Longy this morning.  1 foot at best.  Can’t really say much more.  Wind expected to strengthen and be a repeat of yesterday.  Surf Photos of You.

Go With The Flow, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on November 24th, 2010 in Byron.

Easterly winds, easterly swell, sand banks with big holes in them causing a potent venturi effect. It all adds up to one thing, strong currents, in Byron Bay today. This doesn’t mean there weren’t any waves, there were. In fact for those with the paddling technique and surf fitness, or those who just plain stubborn about it, there were some pretty joyous waves on offer in the bay. But if burning shoulders and aching back muscles ain’t your cup of tea, there’s always the option of holding book and taking bets on who’ll hold out the longest. You see sooner or later, Huey always wins, and everyone is forced to go with the flow, In Byron Bay Today.
