Tiny Tuesday

Posted on November 23rd, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Nice morning in Sydney. There was a light N-NE breeze as we got underway, but as expected, there’s only the weakest of weak little NE wind swell’s showing along our beaches. It’s around the metre mark at sea, but the average period of about 6 seconds does not promise much power. Sets will be in the knee to waist high range for the most part and you’ll be doing a lot of waiting around for the little buggers too.

From the shape of the latest forecast models, it appears that we’re in for another week of small to not quite flat conditions as a succession of modestly sized, short period  ENE wind swells pulse in to our region.

If you’re keen for something bigger, it looks as though you’ll have a choice of heading to far western Vicco or the far north coast and SE Queensland. The former region could be thumping toward the end of the week according to the projections, while the latter should have some size, but east winds will keep the quality at a fairly ordinary level at most spots.  However some of the points could be the goods, especially up around Noosa toward the end of the week…

Weather Situation

A high over the Tasman extends a ridge over New South Wales. This high is expected to remain semi-stationary throughout the week, bringing north to northeast winds to most of the coast.

Forecast for Tuesday until midnight

Forecast for Wednesday

Bonding (HMB Jetty)

Posted on November 23rd, 2010 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions.
Full moon at dawn
On our third session this morning, I really clicked with Emm, my new 7'0" Ward Coffey surfboard. The waves at the Jetty were fairly clean and chest- to shoulder-high (waist- to chest-high relative to Luke), but a bit jumbled and funky after the stormy weekend. We shared the break with only a shy harbor seal who peered at us from a safe distance. I rode a bunch of fun lefts as close as I dared to the rip-rap wall bordering the road, and a couple of rights as well. Once Luke and I split a peak; it's always nice sharing a wave with a buddy. The sunrise and moonset were lovely in the cold dawn air. Just as recent studies have shown, wave-riding greatly improved my mood. Stoked!
Surfline: NW (290-330) swell mix eases, with some reinforcing NW swell moving in later in the day, as small SSW (185-210) energy continues to mix in. Most exposed breaks are good for at least waist-chest-head high surf, with top NW spots pulling in some head high to 2-3' overhead sets at times. Conditions are an issue in most areas with plenty of residual lump and bump to the surface, as well as steady onshore flow. The tide hits a 6'+ high right around 10am. (Wave) SWELL: 7.9 ft at 11.4 s WNW / WIND WAVE: 1.6 ft at 4.0 s W / WVHT: 7.9 ft / APD: 7.4 s / MWD: 301°

Pinball Wizards, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on November 23rd, 2010 in Byron.

There’s a spot in the rocks we call, The Pinball, in Byron Bay. It gets its name by sucking the unsuspecting and uninitiated into it, then bouncing them from rock to rock before spitting them out the other end. The locals know it well and give it a wide birth when the current is running through it. Be that as it may, we saw more folks get sucked through the pinball today than you’d normally see in a month. I can only assume there were a whole lot of newcomers in the bay. Take a little more care folks. Luckily for most, it was mainly bruised egos, dinged boards and few scratches to remind them of their trip through the pinball, in Byron Bay today. For our email subscribers who are wondering where they’re emails are. We are currently upgrading our subscription service to a far more flexible email solution. This will take a few days then you’ll start receiving your daily emails again, In Byron Bay Today.

Apologies!

Hello Friends,

Sorry about that! It seems the cloud burped and the site went away for a few hours. Back on deck now and all should be as usual tomorrow.

Waves were soft, weak and small this morning and the outlook for tomorrow is for even punier conditions. The swell went from the east around to the NE today, but using a word like swell to describe the dribble we had is pretty laughable. Since this morning the average period has lost another second, so at mid-evening it was only 5 seconds apart.

Blerggh

Happily, since this morning’s run of the models, the supercomputers seem to be calculating a bit of an improvement for us around Wednesday – but only at spots that can handle a heap of NE wind and like east swell. I’m not expecting much in the way of quality, but it might be sort of okay in a sideshore messy kinda way…

Anyway, have a good evening and catchya tomorrow.

Smorgasbord, In Byron Bay Today’s weekend review.

Posted on November 21st, 2010 in Byron.

Yup that’s the word that comes to mind when reviewing the last week in Byron Bay. We had it all, crowd moments and peace and quiet, sunshine and rain, northerlies and southerlies with plenty of waves. The simple fact is whether a member of the little whiteboard set, the logger crew or a rider of all things surf like, If you didn’t score some waves this last week, then you either weren’t here or didn’t try real hard. As Huey pretty much blessed us with a veritable smorgasbord of choice, In Byron Bay Today.

What’s this? A sunny morning? In Sydney?

Posted on November 20th, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Racing off to the We Love Waves conference shortly, and I hope to blog something from there if I can, but this morning’s good news is that we do actually have some little waves on tap this morning. Swell has gone a bit more to the SE, so that should open up a few more options. Plus there are sunny skies and light offshores. Quite a contrast to the forecast of a day or two ago.

Dee Why, as the picture shows, is getting the occasional waist high little thing. They’re pretty soft looking because the average period is only around the 8 second mark, but hey, you can catch ‘em and it’s a beautiful morning for a quick little wave before heading off to the We Love Waves conference!

I reckon the energy levels will decline toward dark and from tomorrow Sydney will slip into another stretch of small to near flat conditions. The wave making systems aren’t looking too intense and worse, they’re also looking like giving the east coast a wide berth.

So get out and enjoy and have yourself a top old day!

Weather Situation

A weak low lies off the northern New South Wales coast while a ridge of high pressure strengthens from the west, bringing relatively cool southerly winds to coastal areas. This ridge will remain over the state into next week, with winds gradually turning more northerly as an associated high builds over the Tasman Sea, although a weak cold front will bring a brief southerly change to the south coast om Sunday. This high is expected to remain the dominant feature throughout the coming week.

Forecast for Saturday until midnight

Winds: South to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots tending east to southeasterly up to 10 knots during the afternoon then tending northeasterly later in the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre. Swell: Southeasterly 1 metre.

Forecast for Sunday

Winds: North to northeasterly 5 to 10 knots becoming northeasterly 10 to 15 knots around midday then increasing to 10 to 20 knots during the afternoon. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres by early evening. Swell: Southeasterly about 1 metre.

Forecast for Monday

Winds: Northeasterly 5 to 10 knots increasing to 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon then increasing to 15 to 20 knots during the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the evening. Swell: Southeasterly 0.5 metres.

Well, yeah, I begrudgingly admit there are waves. But the ones I had a shot at riding this morning were so dribbly weak I doubt even the longest of longboards would have provided much of a ride. Nice day, but

Small and powerless

1 – 2 foot with a very occasional bigger 2. 5 one.  Left over bumpy lumpy conditions from yesterday.    But there are waves.  Surf Photos of You.

Fine, dry and mild on the Central Coast this morning.  1 – 2 foot swell from the south east.  Semi smooth conditions.  Have a good weekend.
