No out with a bang

Posted on December 31st, 2010 in Long Reef.

There is no going out with a bang, surfing wise this morning.  Knee to waist high but the conditions are really nice.  Very summery.  Light NNE wind and a small ENE swell direction.  Water a very nice 20C and clean.  Enjoy the last day of the year and be safe. Surf Photos of You.

Sunshine Coast Bch

Posted on December 31st, 2010 in Surf Reports.

I haven’t looked at charts, so I’m assuming the swell is pretty southerly. The points, apparently, weren’t working yesterday. And today there are still bumps at Sunshine Bch, but they look pretty weak and wind-affected. Maybe some of the bigger ones are head-high

The last day of 2010

Posted on December 31st, 2010 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Well, here we are. One day left of 2010 and tomorrow the old odometer clicks over once more. I hope your 2010 was better than this morning’s paltry offerings for Sydney surfers. Gadzooks it is most ordinary looking mateys. The MHL buoy is showing a weak easterly wind swell of around a metre at 7 seconds apart. That’s similar to what we had yesterday at this time, so if you found something to tempt you then, I’d head back there again for a look today. As the picture from Dee Why shows however, you’ll be doing very well to find anything above the waist high mark. Most places will be much smaller than that.

We should see a standard issue seabreeze this afternoon and with luck it will give the average wave height a nudge up at the exposed spots. I’m not overly hopeful on that score for today, but tomorrow afternoon late might possibly see a bit of wind swell action since the wind is forecast to get into the 20-30 kt range.

Seems we’re in for a scorcher out west of the city today and tomorrow, so maybe it’s just as well the waves will be tiny because there’ll probably be a few more people than usual coming out to the coast to cool off. Water is around the 20 mark – as it has been for some time now. Tide’s low at 1120 and then back to high around 1710.

Go well one and all and have yourself a top final day of 2010.

You’ll want to be keen… very, very keen

Hello Friends,

You’ll have to look pretty hard for a wave this morning in Sydney. It’s a lovely morning and the water’s around the 20 mark, but Huey couldn’t be less interested in us. Low tide’s at 1010 and the high will be along at about 1600 – not that it much matters from a surf perspective. We have a little east wind swell of about a metre with a totally gutless power setting of 6 seconds. If you can find something in the knee to waist high range, you’ll be doing very well indeed.

When I checked the Collaroy-Narrabeen stretch a little before 0630 this morning, there was a small group at Northy and two or three bods down the beach toward Gardens. But the biggest set I saw was about knee high – and it turned up after quite a long wait. Around at Dee Why, the situation was much the same. It was a little better at No Mans than in the corner, but the difference was very slight.

Outlook for today is for the seabreeze to come up from the SE later this morning and to swing more NE later, but the predicted velocity isn’t going to push up much, so we’re unlikely to see much, if any, real improvement to the surf situation.

The last day of 2010 just might see a slightly better chance of waves in the afternoon at the semi-protected NE corners. We’re due to get a combo of small east swell and NE wind speeds peaking in the 20-25kt range, so that may produce some chest high plus sets at exposed spots.

Longer term, I’m not really seeing much of anything on the charts to give us hope of a change to the summery pattern. Guess that’s not too surprising given that it’s summer and all…

Go well and stay happy!

Weather Situation

A weak southerly change on the southern New South Wales coast is expected to reach Sydney late this morning or midday. Forecast for Friday
Winds: Northerly 10 to 15 knots tending north to northeasterly 20 to 25 knots in the afternoon. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres by early evening. Swell: Easterly 1 metre.

Sunny Coast Rpt

Posted on December 30th, 2010 in Surf Reports.

Points were kinda working yesterday morning, and would have been the only thing protected from the southerly. This morning, the rain is finally clearing but the southerlies remain and Sunshine Bch just looks messy as a result

Another tiny morning.

Posted on December 30th, 2010 in Surf Reports.

Very small and full this morning.  1 – 2 foot knee high weak wind swell.  Hardly any wind early but expect to turn NE during the day.  ENE not really doin it at Longy.  Enjoy Surf Photos of You

Sunny morning and little waves about in Sydney

Posted on December 29th, 2010 in Dee Why, North Narrabeen, South Narrabeen.

Hello Friends,

Good to see some sunshine this morning along with a more easterly swell direction. Again, it’s not big, but some peaks are getting into the chest high range at optimally exposed locations. I had to wait around to grab the snaps, so expect to have a bit of a chat between the little sets. Wind wasn’t a factor for the early risers, but the Bureau says it’ll go around to the NE and be a summery 15-20 kts this afternoon.

Low tide is at 0850 and the high is at 1445. Swell is out of the east at about 1.5 metres, with a period of just over 8 seconds.

Get out there and have a good time if you can!

Winds: North to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots becoming northeasterly 15 to 20 knots by early evening. Seas: Up to 1.5 metres. Swell: Southeasterly about 1 metre tending easterly from midday.

Small but clean.

There are some small waist high waves down at Longy this morning.  Swell from the SE and a very light WNW tending to turn NE during the day.  Enjoy.  Surf Photos of You.

Yup folks these are the most clicked on shots from the, In Byron Bay Today updates for December 2010. It’s been a pretty month, some good waves and some sad times too. But I suppose that’s just life on the move, we take the good with open gratitude and find our hidden strength when times are hard. This month we’ve seen it all, swell and flat spells happiness and grief, wild weather and glorious days, quite times and radical crowds in the bay. But when all is said and done I couldn’t think of any other place I’d rather witness it all than right here right now, In Byron Bay Today.
