Happy little holidays to you
Posted on December 25th, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
The metre or so of 8 sec period wind swell has moved around to the east and was producing knee to waist high grovelers for Christmas morning fugitives at Dee Why. The wind was light still at around 1000, so surface conditions were reasonably smooth. My guess is that it might be a touch bigger at spots that like east.
Wind call is for NE at 15-20 kts this afternoon for the low tide at 1730. Given the primary direction is already from the east, there just might be the odd interesting lump at semi-protected north corners.
We’re due to get a late south change tomorrow, so my guess is that the wind swell will weaken overnight and that Sunday morning will be smaller and weaker than the stuff we have right now.
So go forth and have a top old day and may all be happy and well in your world.
Here’s the word from the Bureau
Weather Situation
A high pressure system is strengthening over the Tasman sea, and will extend a ridge to the New South Wales north coast during Saturday. The high will move towards New Zealand later Saturday before a low pressure trough and associated cold front bring a gusty southerly change to the New South Wales coast during Sunday and Monday. Conditions should ease on Tuesday as the next high moves over the region.Forecast for Saturday until midnight
Winds: East to northeasterly 5 to 10 knots becoming northeasterly up to 15 knots around midday then tending north to northeasterly 15 to 20 knots during the afternoon. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres by early evening then increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres later in the evening. Swell: Southerly 1.5 metres.Forecast for Sunday
Winds: Northeast to northwesterly 10 to 20 knots tending east to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon ahead of a southerly change 20 to 30 knots in the evening. Seas: 1.5 to 2 metres. Swell: Southeasterly 1.5 metres tending easterly 1 metre from the morning. Isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.Forecast for Monday
Winds: Southerly 15 to 25 knots, reaching 30 knots at times, decreasing to 10 to 20 knots during the morning then increasing to up to 30 knots during the afternoon. Seas: Up to 3 metres decreasing to 2 metres during the morning then increasing to 3 metres during the evening. Swell: Easterly 1.5 metres tending southeasterly during the evening. Isolated thunderstorms early in the morning, mainly offshore.

Poocifica (Linda Mar)
Posted on December 25th, 2010 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Reports, Surf Sessions. Last Sunday, I searched the San Mateo County coast in a steady rain, looking for surfable waves. The best I found were at Linda Mar, but the water was a disgusting shade of brown, and although there were folks giving it a go, the surf didn't look good enough to risk the contamination [video]. It wasn't until Wednesday that I learned why the water looked so filthy: Pacifica State Beach was closed along with 3 others due to an overflow of the oxymoronic "sanitary" sewer on Sunday. So Linda Mar was my last choice this morning, but unfortunately the Half Moon Bay breaks were sloppy or lackluster. Montara looked clean but solidly overhead with a hard paddle out, so I drove on to Poocifica.Linda Mar was having a good day, and - after walking past signs warning of contamination - there were already plenty of people out taking advantage of it. Why do we surf despite the risk of illness from dirty water? It's hard to explain to non-surfers, but when the waves are good, or at least decent, and you need to get in a surf between storms, well... we just go and hope for the best. Perhaps they haven't re-tested recently, and the water's OK now. It looks clean, and doesn't smell bad. For sure I won't swallow (nevermind that seawater gets forced into my sinuses and drips out later). I'll take some extra vitamin C. Little lies we tell ourselves, and then we paddle out, and hope we don't get sick.
I've just found an article from yesterday saying the beach remains closed through the weekend, because they won't test the water again until Monday. Here's hoping no invisible beasties are about to wage war in my body. For now, I have to say it was worth it. I first joined the pack on a left just south of the pumphouse. (The pumphouse contains restrooms and a little-known women's changing area. It's also the mechanism for disgorging putrid water into the lineup though gates that open without warning even in dry weather. I've never seen it, but I've heard it's pretty smelly.) I snared one nice ride from the crowd but grew tired of the competition, so I got out and walked past the trickle of water emanating from under the pumphouse to another peak farther north. Surfers were spread out there, and although the waves were closing out more, they were doing so gently on the rising tide and were a bit bigger than at the crowded peak. I rode some nice lefts and rights chest- to shoulder-high. The offshore grew strong and gave me some good practice getting Emm over the lip and down the face against the wind.

I wore my Hotline 4/3 this morning since the Rip Curl was still wet, but it's leaky and not as warm, and I was getting quite chilled with the wind blowing hard at times. I caught a fun left in close to the beach, dogging a sponger who was frozen like a reindeer in the headlights, and called it a Happy Holiday.

Fun little Xmas waves
Posted on December 25th, 2010 in Long Reef. The sun is shining and the wind is light. There are a few fun little 2 foot, waist to chest high waves this morning. A beautiful start to Xmas day. Also a good day for your youngun’s to start to surf on their new chrissy surfboards. Have a great day and Merry Christmas from Surf Photos of You
A very blerghy Christmas Eve
Posted on December 24th, 2010 in Dee Why, North Narrabeen.Hello Friends,
Grey skies, 10 kts of SE wind and a couple metres of short period SE wind swell do not the prettiest of pictures make. Unless you are super, ultra, extra keen, I’d say attending to various holiday chores and associated hilarity would be the plan for today. Yes, if you really want to, you can find the odd grovel pretty much anywhere. As the pics show, it is extremely messy, weak and disorganised along the Northy to Collaroy stretch and just as ordinary from Longy to Dee Why.
Outlook for the rest of the day is for a steady supply of SE junkiness.
At least tomorrow the weather should be a bit nicer and the winds will be around to the north and NE. So, while the swell won’t exactly be pumping, at least it should be less junky and horrid looking for Christmas. It’s set to be pretty small though, so don’t get the hopes up too much.
Boxing Day should start out okay, but then get stormy and showery later as winds go around from NW to SW. With luck, we’ll have a little easterly wind swell to go with it.
Tide is high at 1000 today and low at 1645. Tomorrow it’ll be 1100 for the high and around 1730 for the high.
Have a top old day!

Santa Surfs In Byron Bay Today
Posted on December 24th, 2010 in Byron.
Yes its true folks, Santa and his little helper were spotted in the lineup, in Byron Bay today. Gone was the red suit, unfortunately Johnny still has that, but the red hat and middle age spread was a dead giveaway. The sleigh and reindeer aren’t much use around here, but old Nic and his little helper popped a few fives and spread a little Christmas Cheer. So from Yoko and Myself a huge Merry Christmas to you joyous people, have fun and be safe, be silly but not stupid, and hopefully we’ll see you all for more slides as we countdown into the New Year, In Byron Bay Today. Don’t forget there will be a ‘paddle out’ at Clarkes Beach this coming Sunday 26th (Boxing Day) at 10.00 am to farewell Troy Jackson and folks will meet later at the Bowlo at 2.00pm.
SE wind making it sloppy.
Posted on December 24th, 2010 in Long Reef. The 12 knot SE wind is making condition a little choppy. There is about 2 – 3 foot of SSE wind swell, but its not worth a surf unless you missed last Tuesday pulse and are desperate for a wave. Try the southern ends. Collaroy is only about 2 foot so Dee Why or Warriewood may be a better option. Enjoy Surf Photos of You.
Hey! Little waves!
Posted on December 23rd, 2010 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
A little 8s SE swell is providing a few small diversions at spots that like that sort of thing. Nothing too huge because it’s only 1.5m out at sea, but there should be the odd waist high set around the place. Tide’s high at 0915 and low at 1600. But the afternoon sesh will probably be pretty ordinary if the Bureau is right. They say the wind will be out of the south at 20-30 kts by then.
oops radio time, back in a tick with thoughts about the outlook…

Weather Situation
A cold front will move over the southwestern Tasman this morning and a high pressure system south of the Bight will extend a ridge to New South Wales north coast behind the front. By Friday the high will move over the southern Tasman Sea and before moving rapidly towards New Zealand during Saturday. On Sunday another cold front is expected to bring southerly change along the coast.Forecast for Thursday until midnight
Winds: Northerly 5 to 15 knots tending north to northeasterly up to 10 knots during the morning then tending south to southeasterly up to 25 knots by early evening. Winds tending southerly 20 to 30 knots later in the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 2 metres later in the evening. Swell: Southerly 1 metre.Forecast for Friday
Winds: Southerly 20 to 30 knots tending south to southeasterly 15 to 20 knots around dawn then tending east to southeasterly up to 15 knots around midday. Winds tending easterly up to 10 knots later in the evening. Seas: 1.5 to 2 metres decreasing to below 1 metre around midday. Swell: Southeasterly about 1.5 metres.Forecast for Saturday

Pics from Thursday: North Narrabeen
Posted on December 23rd, 2010 in Click! Pics for folk, North Narrabeen, surf photography, Top stories. After lunch I wandered over to North Narrabeen to see what was what. There were small waves from about the Pines all the way to the Alley. A bunch of bodyboarders were looking to get smashed near carparks, while up at Northy things were slightly less hectic for the small crowd. As with Curly, the waves weren’t much to write home about, but the lack of wind meant people could enjoy some soft, glassy little peaks that very occasionally produced a mildly interesting section.
I grabbed a few piccies, so check ‘em out below…

Pics from Thursday: Curl Curl
Posted on December 23rd, 2010 in Click! Pics for folk, Curl Curl, Top stories.Spent close to an hour taking snaps down at Curl Curl this morning. Waves weren’t exactly spectacular, being a bit on the fat and slow side thanks to the high tide and weakening south east wind swell. But the forecast wind didn’t turn up, so the 20-30 people splashing around on the banks in the middle of the beach were at least getting glassy lumps.
After I ran out of memory cards, I headed for home to process the pics and get them online.
