Is it just my imagination…
Posted on December 14th, 2010 in Dee Why, North Narrabeen.Hello Friends,
… or are the waves just a few mm bigger? According to the latest data from the MHL buoy off Sydney shows the wind swell has moved around to the SE. It’s still around a metre and about 7-8 seconds apart, so only the most optimally exposed spots are showing anything that might (generously) be described as a wave. There was only one person having a go at Northy when I checked before 7 this morning. It was so small and hopeless though that he seemed unable to catch anything. Around at Dee Why there were a few more bods in the water than yesterday. The improved swell direction means that there are a few (briefly) knee high bomb sets. You really need the mal or the SUP though.
Wind is set to be onshore through most of the day. It’s supposed to be out of the SE at first and then to swing around to the NE.
The offshore surface temp (not necessarily the same as the inshore equivalent) has crept up slightly to a touch over 18 degrees. Tides aren’t swinging around too much today, so there’s not going to be a lot of variation between the 0810 low and 1410 high.
The models are currently pointing to a very slight improvement over the next couple days. But we’re only talking the difference between barely surfable and marginal.
Have yourself a top old day!

Weather Situation
A weakening low pressure trough and southerly change lie on the northern New South Wales coast. A high pressure system centred near Adelaide is expected to strengthen over the Tasman Sea on Tuesday, directing generally easterly winds onto the New South Wales coast. Winds will turning more northerly during Wednesday, before a trough brings a southerly change to central and southern parts of the coast on Thursday.

Shire Rpt
Posted on December 14th, 2010 in Surf Reports.Marginally larger than the past couple of days. Grey, choppy, knee-high
Yes 15 cm bigger.
Posted on December 14th, 2010 in Long Reef.Don is right. The swell has increased up half a foot to 1 . 5 to maybe 2 foot. The southerly is up early which is a cause for the increase in SE swell. Not much happening at the northern ends today. Surf Photos of You.
Summery Blast, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on December 14th, 2010 in Byron, Surf Reports.
Hey now that’s more like it, no rain, hot and humid with crystal clear water and a few little slides to boot, in Byron Bay today. Huey finally gave us a blast of summer weather in the bay, and not moment too soon either. Folks were starting to look pretty forlorn with all the grey skies howling northerlies and rain. Weather dudes say it won’t last, but what the hell projecting into the future never really achieves much anyway. It’ll change when it changes that’s just the way it goes, but right now the crew that got amongst it were pretty grateful for the summery blast, In Byron Bay Today.
Beautiful morning, but it’s the same old surf story for Sydney
Posted on December 13th, 2010 in Dee Why, North Narrabeen, South Narrabeen.Hello Friends,
Wind this morning was out of the S-SW at around 20 kts, but the Bureau says it’ll soon be around to the south and south east. Swell was coming weakly from the south and was only about a metre at sea. There’s just not much happening wave wise. Checked the Collaroy-Narra and Dee Why- No Man’s stretches and did not see anything catchable with less than a SUP. Waves were ankle to knee high – if that. Water temp slumped late last week and is currently oscillating between around 17.5 and 18.5 – yikes!!
The flatness continues.
Outlook is for the minor conditions to go on for at least the next 48 hours. We might possibly get a tiny bump upward into the just barely surfable range toward the end of the week, but it’s not looking spectacular by any stretch of the imagination.
Ah well, keep on smilin’ and have yourself a top old day.
Weather Situation
A front and associated southerly change on the Mid North Coast is expected to weaken during Monday morning. A high pressure system is expected to develop over the Southern Tasman Sea on Tuesday with winds along the NSW coast tending east to northeasterly.
Forecast for Monday until midnight
Winds: South to southeasterly 15 to 20 knots. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres. Swell: Northeasterly 0.5 metres.
Forecast for Tuesday
Winds: South to southeasterly 5 to 15 knots tending east to southeasterly about 10 knots during the afternoon then tending east to northeasterly by early evening. Seas: Below 1 metre. Swell: Easterly 0.5 metres.
Forecast for Wednesday
Winds: North to northwesterly 5 to 15 knots tending north to northeasterly during the afternoon then increasing to 15 to 20 knots during the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the evening. Swell: Easterly about 1 metre.
Ground Hog day.

Many folks slept in, meandered off into to town late morning for brekkie and then stretched their legs and made a few Sunday kind of yawning noises before considering lunch, in Byron Bay today. That’s pretty much the standard response to a lack of swell when Huey decides it’s a lay day in the bay. A few of the logger crew wound up a little more effort and did their best to make the most of what was on offer, while the rest just sort of wandered off to look for a nice cool shady spot to contemplate a little more snooze, In Byron Bay Today.
Sunday morning from the night before
Posted on December 12th, 2010 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends
Late last night the MHL buoy was showing less than a metre of 7sec ESE wind swell off Sydney. This morning it was just about the same, but maybe a touch more to the east. When I grabbed a snap of Dee Why around 0830, there was only one person in the water at that end of the beach. Amazingly, he caught a knee high wave. It ran for a few seconds too. An impressive achievement given the utterly tiny dribble.
The models are still not looking too encouraging for the east coast over the coming week. There might possibly be something in the 10-12 sec range early in the week, but it’ll be very small. With luck though, it’ll be enough to work for a mal, SUP or similar. Once again, it looks as though western Vicco is about the best prospect for a mainland wave in the coming week. I’d pull on a steamer for the conditions they’re likely to have around Tuesday (couple metres at 10-12 sec).
Have yourself a top old Sunday – wherever you may find yourself!
Weather Situation
A ridge of high pressure should persist over northern New South Wales for a few days, with a generally northwest to southwest airstream over the coast.

Winds: Westerly 5 to 15 knots tending easterly up to 10 knots around midday then tending east to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon. Winds tending north to northeasterly up to 10 knots by early evening. Seas: Below 1 metre. Swell: Easterly 0.5 metres tending northeasterly from midday.
Forecast for Monday
Winds: Northwest to southwesterly 10 to 20 knots tending south to southeasterly around dawn then becoming southeasterly 10 to 15 knots later in the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres around dawn. Swell: Northeasterly 0.5 metres.
Forecast for Tuesday
Winds: East to southeasterly 5 to 10 knots tending northeasterly during the afternoon then tending north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre. Swell: Easterly 0.5 metres.

Santa SUP Sunny Sunday in Summer
Posted on December 12th, 2010 in Long Reef.A beautiful morning down at Long Reef. But.. there is no surf. Its the smallest I have seen it in a long while and its getting depressing. But it is Summer and with no unstable weather to give us nice swell we just have to contend with beautiful days like today and no surf. Wind off shore early. 1 Foot at best. High at 1.24pm. This should bring it up to at least a foot. Get out the longest board you have a practice some style surfing. Surf Photos of You.
Pretty Vacant, In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Review.
Posted on December 12th, 2010 in Byron.
So another week has come and gone in the bay, the rain is still falling, the wind is still blowing and we’re feeling pretty vacant as we edge ever closer towards Christmas, in Byron Bay today. December can do that, the northerlies howl, the traffic snarls and the Huey keeps the rain storms moving regularly through town. Will it settle down after Christmas, only time will tell, usually we’d call it a safe bet. But it appears that La Nina has a pretty firm grip, so maybe Huey is not quiet done with us yet, In Byron Bay Today.
