A few small waves about this morning

Posted on January 25th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

The Bureau is expecting a metre of easterly swell, but the MHL buoy this morning is reporting straight south wind swell of a couple metres and an average period inching toward the 8 second mark. It was glassy early on and Dee Why point was picking up the odd set into the chest high range. There were nice long lulls to be waited out though. But it’s great to see a little something rolling in on a warm summer morning.

The wind is set to come up from the SE according to the forecast and then back off this afternoon before swinging to the NE.

According to the swell models we should have more or less the current levels of energy over the next few days. They are showing a gradual upward trend to the weekend too. Nothing astounding looking at this stage, but January might end with some fun head high waves on Sunday morning at places that like east swell. With luck it’ll stick around to Monday.

Go well with your day!

Weather Situation
A high pressure system over the eastern Tasman Sea extends a ridge to the New South Wales north coast, while another ridge lies across Victoria and southern New South Wales. The trough which brought a southerly change to southern and central parts of the coast on Monday has stagnated and is now weakening. Another trough and associated southerly change will move along the southern half of the coast during Wednesday, although a more vigorous cold front is expected to affect the entire coast at the end of the week, assisted by a strengthening high south of the Bight.

Forecast for Tuesday until midnight
Winds: Southerly 10 to 20 knots tending southeasterly around 10 knots during the afternoon, then east to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the evening. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres decreasing to below 1 metre during the afternoon. Swell: Easterly 1 metre.

Forecast for Wednesday
Winds: North to northeasterly 10 to 20 knots tending northeast ahead of a south to southeasterly change 15 to 20 knots in the early afternoon. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres around midday. Swell: Easterly 1 metre. The chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

Forecast for Thursday
Winds: Northeast to southeasterly 5 to 15 knots, reaching 20 knots at times, decreasing below 15 knots during the morning then decreasing below 10 knots during the afternoon. Seas: Up to 1.5 metres decreasing to below 1 metre during the evening. Swell: Northeasterly 1 metre.

2ft peaky wind swell.

Posted on January 25th, 2011 in Longy.

There is a small NE peaky wind swell around.  Longy is about 2 foot may be waist to chest high.  Collaroy is smaller and there is a 2 foot wave at Dee Why.  Wind from the SW early.  There are some small waves around.  Enjoy  Surf Photos of You.

Curly/Freshy Rpt

Posted on January 25th, 2011 in Surf Reports.

Pretty uninspiring morning. Waves at Curly are around shoulder-high, smaller at Freshwater, but both places are really suffering from a lack of push. People are struggling to get onto waves and then struggling to stay on and actually execute manoeuvres too

You’d want to be keen

Posted on January 24th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Looks like a good morning for a coffee and work. Only a single bod in the water – and given his SUP he was really more on the water than in it. Conditions in the corner at Dee Why looked junky, weak and small. According to the MHL buoy the windswell is out of the ENE at a about 1.5 metres and barely 7 seconds apart. If you could find a rideable waist high wave, I reckon you’d be doing well. I’m sure there are a few about, but with the tide coming in, you won’t want to leave it too late.

Speaking of late, there’s at least a possibility of a brief window of fun toward dusk. Sometimes when the NE’r blows as hard as it’s forecast to this afternoon (20-30kts) there can be an hour or so of okay conditions in south corners as the wind comes around into the oncoming windswell. Not a huge possibility I admit, but ya never know… it might happen…

Outlook for the next few days isn’t terribly exciting for our region. Swell is set to remain out of the east and for the most part to be small and short period. The weekend, which was looking more promising a day or two ago isn’t looking dire or anything, but the models seem to be showing pretty much only Sunday morning as being of much interest.

Of course we have a small tropical cyclone (Anthony) boiling around off north Queensland, but on current reckoning it’s not expected to do much of anything this far down the coast. Indeed, if it plays out as the forecasts anticipate, it may not sling much into the SE Qld surf zones either.

Have yourself a good one!

Weather Situation

A weak high pressure system over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge to the New South Wales north coast. A low well south of Victoria extends a front northwards. This will bring a southerly change along the southern half of the coast today. The front will weaken on the Mid North Coast on Tuesday. Another front will move along the southern half of the coast on Wednesday,

Forecast for Monday until midnight

Winds: North to northeasterly 15 to 25 knots increasing to 20 to 30 knots during the afternoon ahead of a southerly change 20 to 30 knots during the evening, Seas: 1.5 to 2 metres increasing up to 3 metres during the afternoon then decreasing to 2 metres later in the evening. Swell: Easterly about 1.5 metres.

Forecast for Tuesday

Winds: South to southeasterly 15 to 20 knots decreasing to 10 to 15 knots during the morning then tending east to northeasterly by early evening. Seas: Up to 2 metres decreasing to below 1 metre during the afternoon. Swell: Easterly 1 metre.

Forecast for Wednesday

Winds: North to northeasterly 15 to 20 knots tending southeasterly up to 25 knots during the evening. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres increasing to 2 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Easterly about 1 metre.

Smaller summer.

Posted on January 24th, 2011 in Long Reef.

It is truly a summers days today.  Hot, on shore breeze and small surf.  Nothing out in that vast Pacific to generate anything at all.  Longy is 1 foot and with no really good banks at the moment its just closing out.  Very short take offs and a single turn or off the top if you are lucky. Too Easy, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on January 24th, 2011 in Byron.

One of those weird days when everything around us is busy and chaotic and yet we just seemed to casually slip through the middle of it all with ease, in Byron Bay today. We were starting to feel blessed as we popped into several of the busiest spots in town to shoot, and while cars circulated stressfully looking for spots, each time we just spontaneously had a car park materialise before us. Add to that glorious sunshine, good swell and crystal clear water, well it was all pretty darn good. But then it gets even better, as we take a break and paddle out, the vast majority of the crowd paddles in. We score an hour of utterly uncrowded bliss on a sunny Sunday during school holidays, go figure. Sometimes one can’t help but wonder if Huey is maybe pulling a few strings, regardless of how or why, gratitude is most definitely in order. After such a joyous day, being grateful is just too easy, In Byron Bay Today.

Small but not flat for Sunday

Posted on January 23rd, 2011 in Dee Why, North Narrabeen.

Hello Friends,

Waist high with the odd slightly bigger one was the call for Sunday morning at Dee Why and North Narrabeen. The sets were turning up on a regular basis, so if you had something big and blobby, it wasn’t too long before another opportunity arrived. Crowds are what you’d expect on a sunny summer morning, on a Sunday, in school hols… actually I thought they were relatively modest considering.  Water is absolutely beautiful at the moment. I managed to score a couple fun set waves at Longy last night and it was just a pleasure to be in the ocean.

From the Bureau’s forecast it looks as though we’re into a couple days of NE’ly. That could mean some junky but okay size wind waves for the late at the usual spots. It could also mean the return of our little blue pals with their bubble sails and stinging tentacles.

A south change is due around Tuesday but with luck there will be a little window of opportunity to get something from the NE’r before the wind swings. The rest of the work week is pretty so-so looking, but next weekend’s prospects remain interesting. I hope the models are right, because this time next week could be pretty fun as a couple metres of long period east swell pushes in.

Have yourself a top old Sunday and, if you’re near a wireless at 1000, tune it to 702 on the AM band because I’ll be on Simon Marnie’s weekend show with Dr Rob Brander (aka Dr. Rip). I’m looking forward to having my brain expanded!

Weather Situation

A high pressure system to the southeast of Tasmania extends a ridge along the NSW coast. A low is moving eastwards south of the Bight. During Monday the low will move south of Tasmania with an associated front moving northwards along the southern half of the NSW coast. This front will weaken during Tuesday.

Forecast for Sunday until midnight

Winds: North to northeasterly 15 to 20 knots becoming northeasterly 20 to 25 knots by early evening then increasing to 20 to 30 knots later in the evening. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres by early evening. Swell: Southeasterly 1 metre.

Forecast for Monday

Winds: Northerly 15 to 25 knots tending north to northeasterly 20 to 30 knots around midday then tending southerly later in the evening. Seas: 1.5 to 2 metres increasing to 3 metres around midday. Swell: Easterly about 1.5 metres. The chance of thunderstorms offshore in the afternoon and evening.

Forecast for Tuesday

Winds: Southerly 20 to 30 knots tending south to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the morning then tending east to northeasterly during the evening. Seas: Up to 3 metres decreasing to below 1 metre during the afternoon. Swell: Northeasterly 1 metre.

Sunday Post – 23/1/11 :: wozthatyou.com

Posted on January 23rd, 2011 in Top stories.

Happy New Year and welcome to the first Sunday Post of 2011. Hope you all had a good one.

Thought I’d drop in a quick summary of where I was at during the past week. Made it to North Narra for the early on Monday morning motivated by the promise of huge swell being touted in the forecasts. Reality proved a bit disappointing but I managed to squeeze off a few shots in the short time I was there.

That was it until Saturday morning when I eagerly ventured out again frothing over the prospect of a more than decent level of ground swell. This proved to be true at South Curly which was pulling in the SE swell quite nicely with huge mostly non-rideable sets steaming in.  A few courageous souls took them on but the result was always going to be a rough ending but a fe w did make it through to a happy-ish ending.

To see the shots from these sessions click through on http://www.wozthatyou.com/portfolio147858.html for Northy and on http://www.wozthatyou.com/portfolio148980.html for South Curly.

I have also started putting together “Best of 2010″ which features the stand-out punters and their surfing. I’ve made it through to the end of April – check ‘em out here http://www.wozthatyou.com/group11876.html.

Have a great week!
