An apology
Posted on January 21st, 2011 in Info please!, Top stories.Hello Friends,
I need to apologise for some really annoying ads running on the site over the last few days.
These were what is known in the trade as network ads and that means basically we don’t know for sure what we’ll get until the network runs it. Over the years I’ve had a strict no noise rule for ads, but this particular network served them to us anyway. So, when the complaints came in, I axed the network. Which of course means I also axed the (admittedly paltry) income stream as well.
Now our already difficult advertising situation has become just a little worse.
We’ve always run this site on the smell of an oily rag, but no matter how hard we pare expenses (and we’ve really pared ‘em), the fact is that servers, food, petrol and other such things actually cost money.
I need some ideas about how to get some income happening.
So, I have a question for those of you who like this little site: how would you tackle the income issue?
I’d prefer to see an open dialogue via the comment system, but if you want to keep your remarks off the page, you can use the feedback form. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Confused, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on January 21st, 2011 in Byron.
Yup folks it was just another one of those confusing kind of days where one knows not where to go or what to wear as Huey throws it all at us from every direction, in Byron Bay today. We had it all, full moon tides massively high to the lowest of the low, sunshine, storms, gusting wind and calm moments. There was hinted swell and times of utter flat spells, moments of uncrowded bliss, and times of ridiculous traffic in the water. There was a glorious sunset followed by a heavy but short lived downpour, it’s just the way it is in the bay at the moment, confused? Well, don’t be its perfectly normal for a full moon with a La Nina weather pattern holding sway and school holidays still underway. As all else before it, this too shall come to pass, and when it does we’ll hopefully still be here documenting the lot and sneaking out for a few slides along the way, In Byron Bay Today.
Little bumps about
Posted on January 20th, 2011 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Not much happening down at Dee Why beach. The tide was high for the early risers and the metre and a bit of 7sec east wind swell was frothing lightly in. Sets would be struggling to get much above the waist high mark on the big ones. The small numbers in the water at Dee Why tell the tale I’d say. An unusual level of commitment is required.
The latest forecast is calling for a small Thursday but from tomorrow the trend is upward as we head toward a modest bump upward in energy levels for the weekend. If the prediction pans out, we’ll get a south east swell, ne wind combo that should potentially be fun at numerous spots in the Sydney region. Here’s hoping!
Apropos the very long range outlook, I’m still liking the look of the forecasts for mid next week. They continue to show a reasonably broad area of fetch around a low off to the NE of NZ. If anything develops, I’d expect it’ll be toward the end of next week before anything gets down our way. All highly speculative at this point of course, but fun to imagine the possibilities.
Go well with your day!

Reason Being, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on January 20th, 2011 in Byron.
Many folks that have lived around the Byron region long enough tend to keep a big log or some board of such nature in their quiver for days just like this one, in Byron Bay today. Reason being, is that we all know you just can’t take it for granted that there will be any swell on any given day. It’s not that we don’t get swell, we get plenty. But Huey’s moods round this joint can change quicker than a politician’s policy when faced with a bad popularity poll. The bay can go from cooking for the little white board set one day, to hardly enough to slide on big old log the next. Those in the know pulled some flotation out today and just made the best of what little was on offer. After all, a little bit of something is a whole lot more fun than a tonne of nothing, In Byron Bay Today.
Sunny and small
Posted on January 20th, 2011 in Long Reef.I was surprised to see a sunrise this morning. But wasn’t surprised to see 2 foot of small bumpy waves at Longy. Not many surfers out. I wonder why. There is a prediction for a small pulse this afternoon or early tomorrow. Surf Photos of You.

La Nina skies, La Nina waves
Posted on January 19th, 2011 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
What a grey old summer it’s been. More rain overnight, more cloudy skies this morning and only a trickle of weak south wind swell. It’s definitely not flat, but anything above the waist to chest high zone is a rare event where Dee Why was concerned early.
The outlook is for the onshore to pick up as the day goes along but the swell’s set to stay around the same size. Certainly there’s nothing obvious in the way of improvement to size being hinted at by the buoy data or being predicted by the latest run of the models.
From the shape of the aforementioned forecasts, it would seem that the next couple days are likely to be fairly ho-hum. Some interpretations of the data reckon we might see a bit of a s-sse pulse develop as we run into the weekend. If they prove correct, there could be 10sec + metre to metre plus energy at south swell spots. Friday arvo could be fun if the swell does arrive because the wind call is NE.
Looking out much further into the middle of next week, the models are showing Huey stirring the pot out to the ENE of NZ. As usual, I don’t get too excited at this early stage, but I like the shape of the fetch being predicted by the super computers. If it happens, I’d say there’s a good chance of substantial and sustained east swell for northern NSW and Qld. The fetch will need to tilt a bit more to the south west to fire juice our way though.
Anyway, all good fun.
Thanks again to all who’ve participated in the anonymous post code survey. We’re inching toward what I hope will be a statistically significant set of numbers. I hope that will be useful to us when we go hunting for advertising income to keep this joint afloat.
Have yourself a top old day!

The size has dropped to around 2 foot and there is a bump to the surface as a result of yesterdays on shore wind. Wind expected to go on shore during the day from the SSE. Enjoy. Surf Photos of You.
Situation Normal, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on January 19th, 2011 in Byron.
Yeah folks it’s back to small logger lines and threatening clouds as cyclonic conditions fade and the La Nina weather holds sway yet again, in Byron Bay today. From massive to small in forty eight hours is pretty much situation normal for this time of year. I just hope that rain holds off and doesn’t top up the floods yet again, up and down the coast. There were few little slides on offer for those who bothered, and plenty of clouds and light changes during the day. It just felt a little weird, being back to normal once again after such a radical swell, In Byron Bay Today.
