Pics from North Narrabeen 4.30 – 6pm after Pro Junior. 15/1/11
Posted on January 15th, 2011 in Top stories.Surf Photos of You. I managed to get a few pics at Northy after the contest. I was hoping that the swell would be on the up but I was disappointed as it was on the down. About 2 – 4 foot. Nice conditions but the tide was a bit high when I was shooting. Check a few out on www.surfphotosofyou.com.au.
Hazy 2 – 3 foot….. at the moment
Posted on January 15th, 2011 in Long Reef. With Tropical Cyclone Vania sitting off the Queensland coast there is an expected jump in swell this weekend and into Monday and Tuesday. The wind is expected to be mainly from the ENE. At the moment Longy is around 2 – 3 foot and bigger down the beach towards DY. Wind is light from the NW – N/ Patience today…. Low at 12md. Maybe a late surf this arvo. Enjoy. Surf Photos of You.
Holding pattern
Posted on January 14th, 2011 in Dee Why, North Narrabeen.Hello Friends,
Light NNE breezes greeted the early risers this morning – and so did the surf conditions of yesterday morning. In fact, I think it might be a touch smaller if anything. The wind swell is still out of the east at a touch under 2 metres but the average period is still around the 7 second mark so the best sets are struggling to get much above the chest high mark on the take-off.
The NE’r will be kicking up as the day goes along and according to the latest from the Bureau will be in the 25-30kt range.
Tide was high around 0400 and will hit the low at about 1050.
Weekend outlook remains positive. I commend you to the Goat’s forecast as once again he’s picked it. The models have been bouncing around, but they’re starting to line up with his Goatness’s prognostications. Have a read of it here
Speaking of the weekend, I’m planning to join the other Surfrider crew down at Freshie for a beach clean up at 0800 as part of the Duke’s Day celebrations. Give us a hoy if you’re down that way.
Have yourself a top Friday!

Dee Why: Summer–small, sloppy and windy
Posted on January 14th, 2011 in Surf Reports. Finally, some typical summer conditions in Sydney. Unfortunately, that means small, sloppy surf and onshore conditions. Never mind — it’s good enough for the learners and the micro-groms who are out and amongst it have a huge amount of fun today.
The Duke’s Day and Surfrider Beach clean-up at Freshy Sat 15/1/2011
Posted on January 14th, 2011 in Environment, Freshwater, Good causes, Surfrider Foundation.
The organisers of the Duke’s Day say it will be a combination sustainability expo and fun events celebration and fundraiser for the Freshy SLSC. Surfrider Foundation will be on hand to conduct a beach clean up from about 0800 to 1000, so if you’re out and about on the day, say hi.

ENE 1 – 2 ft smallness
Posted on January 14th, 2011 in Long Reef.Fairly small at Longy this morning. 1 – 2 foot at best and most of the ENE is missing the beach. For bigger surf try southern ends. Wind out of the NNE. Forecast for some waves Sunday and Monday. Lets hope. Surf Photos of You
Bright Moments, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on January 14th, 2011 in Byron.
Well the sun came out, the swell settled into a nice rhythm around head height and the crew came out to grab some bright moments, in Byron Bay today. Who could blame them either after all that heavy weather. Just a little food for thought folks, although the sun is out and it’s all looking pretty inviting, it’s wise to remember where all that flood water is draining into. Chances are, that water is probably not as clean as we’d all like it to be at the moment, and over the next couple of days, it’s likely to get a bit worse before it gets better. If you do surf make sure you don’t swallow any and have a good rinsing under the showers afterwards, just to play it safe, In Byron Bay Today.
Look to the corners
Posted on January 13th, 2011 in Dee Why, Long Reef, North Narrabeen.Hello Friends,
Wind was NE but relatively light to begin with this morning, so the surface was a bit cleaner than yesterday for the early risers. Swell settings are pretty similar to this time yesterday as well, ie it’s out of the east at a couple metres with a period just a touch under 8 seconds. There is some 10 sec peak stuff in the mix though and that ought to deliver the odd chest high plus set.
Low tide is around 0930 this morning and as a consequence the beachies are crunching over but not in the main showing many peaks. While there was a crew on it at the Northy end of the Collaroy-Narrabeen stretch, it was just shutdown city along the rest of the beach. Not a single punter in the water that I could see.
No Man’s to Dee Why was clean enough, but there only three or four people in the water. They were up toward the pole and having to scratch around a fair amount to find something.
TIDES: L @0930, H @1515
Outlook is still reasonable for a pulse of ENE swell this weekend in the Sydney region. It seems that we’ll have a lot of NE wind with it on Saturday, so that will likely limit the opportunities to the north corners. But there should be reasonable size because the models are still calling for 11-12 sec periods on Saturday, stretching out to a juicy 12-14 seconds on Sunday. Woohoo!
I will definitely be out and about with my camera, hoping to add to my galleries of regular folks at their best.
A couple things to mention this morning: first, I’ve set up a post code survey and would really appreciate if you could fill it in. It’s totally anonymous of course, but knowing where our audience broadly comes from will be very helpful. We’ve really been slammed on the advertising front lately so I’m really scratching around to get some other income stream(s) happening.
Second thing is to mention that Surfrider Foundation is going to celebrate the Duke’s day at Freshwater this Sunday with a beach cleanup. We’ll be down there from about 0800, so look out for our groovy tent.
Weather Situation
A high pressure system over the southern Tasman Sea is extending a ridge to Queensland coast. During Friday the high will move towards New Zealand maintaining the ridge to New South Wales north coast. On Saturday a complex low pressure system is expected to move south of Tasmania.
Forecast for Thursday until midnightWinds: East to northeasterly 15 to 20 knots. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres. Swell: Easterly 2 metres tending southerly 1 metre late this evening.
Forecast for FridayWinds: Northeasterly 20 to 25 knots increasing to 25 to 30 knots later in the evening. Seas: 1.5 to 2 metres. Swell: Easterly 0.5 to 2 metres.
Forecast for SaturdayWinds: North to northeasterly 20 to 30 knots tending northerly 10 to 20 knots during the morning then tending north to northeasterly up to 15 knots during the afternoon. Seas: Up to 3 metres decreasing below 1.5 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Easterly about 2 metres.
