Biffo at the Breaka

Posted on February 20th, 2011 in Top stories.

Naturally this topic is now being discussed on RealSurf’s forums

Sounds from this report on 9MSN as though a couple of tour pros will be sitting on the sidelines for awhile. Basically the story is that Sonny Garcia went the biff on a couple of surfers who’d got into a dispute with Mr Garcia’s son. Then, Mr Garcia is claimed to have attacked a guy who filmed the incident. Jeremy Flores was involved in the original dispute because, the story goes, he’d been surfing with Mr Garcia’s son. The story contains video of the incident so you can be the judge! The ASP has disqualified both surfers from the event.

from espn
Dane Jordan, ASP’s Australasia Tour Manager had this to say:

“Following a physical altercation today, Jeremy Flores has been disqualified from the event. The Association of Surfing Professionals does not condone any form of physical violence and we have strict rules in place for the conduct of any member both Jeremy and Sunny have also been referred to the ASP rules and disciplinary committee who will review the facts and make a decision if further action is required.”

Flores has never fallen into trouble with the ASP in the past. “The ASP took me out of the event because they think we shouldn’t do [sic] violence,” said Flores, “And I agree with that.”

1 – 2 ft peaks.

Posted on February 20th, 2011 in Long Reef.

It is fairly calm down at Long Reef this morning.  There are some 1 – 2 foot peaky waves near the tower and there are a few on it getting some waves.  Swell from the ENE after yesterday afternoon breeze and there is a very light WNW early.  Enjoy  Surf Photos of You

Spoilt, In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Review.

Posted on February 20th, 2011 in Byron, Local Colour.

You know we could point out that it wasn’t quite right at times, or that current was too strong or even that crowds were a little ‘out there’ at times. But hey what would be the point? Truth is we were spoilt rotten this last week with offshore winds consistent swell, and some pretty nice looking sand as well. If you didn’t score this last week then you weren’t here or ya didn’t try hard enough, because truth is we had waves of varying quality and size all over the place every day of the week in the bay. So much so that by the end of the week some of us, myself included, were actually turning a few waves down in exchange for a bit of rest. Now if that isn’t Huey spoiling us, then I don’t know what is In Byron Bay Today.

Small but clean to start

Posted on February 19th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Foggy early, but it cleared away pretty quickly as the sun came up. I hadn’t expected to see much of interest this morning after looking at the indicators late last night. But Huey smiled on the early risers and although the SE windswell is only about a metre out at sea and is plugging along at a pretty standard 8 seconds apart, there were a few clean and glassy waist high peaks here and there. The waits were long between the sets and the incoming tide was going to be an issue soon, but if you’d made the effort there were a few small rewards to be had.

Saturday’s first high tide was at 0945 and the low will be along at 1610.

I’d say as that tide fills in it will knock the surf prospects about and by the time it runs back out again, the NE wind is set to be an issue. Because it’s due to get into the 20-30 kt range, there might possibly be some junky but surfable options in the semi-protected north corners.

Sunday morning might produce a few possibilities as the windswell gets more east and picks up a touch.

Have yourself a terrific Saturday!

Weather Situation
A high near New Zealand extends a ridge to the northern New South Wales coast, and to the south of Tasmania while a broad low pressure trough lies over the western border with a low south of Adelaide. The trough will move eastwards on Saturday with the low likely to move south of Tasmania followed by a vigorous cold front expected to arrive on the South Coast on Sunday and to extend to the far north coast by Monday afternoon.

Forecast for Saturday until midnight
Winds: Northerly 15 to 20 knots tending north to northeasterly 20 to 25 knots around midday then becoming northeasterly 20 to 30 knots during the afternoon. Winds tending north to northeasterly up to 25 knots later in the evening. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres increasing to 2 metres during the afternoon then increasing to 3 metres by early evening. Swell: Easterly 1 metre.

Forecast for Sunday
Winds: North to northwesterly 5 to 15 knots tending south to southeasterly around midday. Seas: Up to 1.5 metres. Swell: Easterly about 1.5 metres. Isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

Forecast for Monday
Winds: Southeasterly 20 to 25 knots increasing southerly 20 to 30 knots during the morning then decreasing to 20 to 25 knots during the evening. Seas: Up to 2 metres increasing to 2 to 3 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Southeasterly about 1.5 metres.

I Heart Dead Presidents (HMB Jetty)

Posted on February 19th, 2011 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Reports, Surf Sessions. Inexplicably, my company gave us a 4-day weekend for Presidents' Day. Hey, I ain't complainin', since I had the opportunity to surf at the right tide, which was smack in the middle of everyone else's workday. We've had a run of storms that made the ocean angry and unruly, but today the wind finally calmed although the sky still gently weeped.
From the side of the road, where I hid a little longer from the cold steady rain, the Jetty looked at least rideable. It turned out to be surprisingly fun once I was in the water. There were only two guys out, a shortboarder on the first peak and a longboarder a bit farther down the beach, so I staked out my own peak to the right of them. Not long past a very high tide, the waves were mushy, and shoulder high +/-.  From the start, it was a bit like an amusement park ride with no lines - paddle out through persistent but not too punishing lines of whitewater, catch a fast fun ride in almost to the beach, rinse, and repeat. I took the video during a short rest break before moving back inside to ride the waves again. I was only out for about an hour, the most my leaky Hotline wetsuit would allow, but my wave count was high. Stoked!

Surfline: WNW (260-320) swell fades through the day today as some small SSW-S (210-175) swells mix in. Conditions are trying to clean up, with much lighter winds out of the NE on tap this morning. Better breaks are good for chest-shoulder-head high+ surf, with top WNW breaks still offering some 2-3' overhead sets. A deep high tide (peaking at a nearly 7' high just after 10am) keeps most breaks on the jumbled/wonky side through the morning. Buoy 46012: (Wave) SWELL: 6.9 ft at 12.1 s NW 15 / WIND WAVE: 2.3 ft at 3.6 s NNE / WVHT: 7.2 ft / APD: 7.4 s / MWD: 306° (Met) WSPD: 12 kts / GST: 16 kts / WVHT: 7.2 ft / DPD: 12.0 s / WDIR: 60° / ATMP: 46.8° F / WTMP: 52.0° F. Tide: 4.5' falling to 3'.

Lovely beach day, but for the fact Hewey is in slumber mode. Short period knee-high bumps are plopping near the shore, but otherwise it’s rather like a lake

Smallness

Posted on February 19th, 2011 in Long Reef.

Life is like a box of chocolates….  You never know what the surf is doing.  Blame La Nina.   It is nice and calm this morning.  Light wind out of the N and the conditions are smooth and glassy.  Pity there is no surf.  Long Reef is about 1 – 2 foot  and with the high tide at 9.49am its going to break closer to the shore than it was when I checked it at 7.30.   I guess its just good to get out in the water as many have done.  Enjoy  Surf Photos of You

Yet another la nina morning

Posted on February 18th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Cloudy and 15 to 20 kts of southerly this morning, but that wasn’t putting off a hardy little group of surfers near Dee Why centre. A lone SUPster was sweeping about hopefully near the rocks at the point as well. Sets were struggling to make the waist high but people on floaty objects were often getting a reasonable distance on the little high tide peaks. The windswell was out of the east this morning. The MHL buoy showed it as being about 1.5 metres but the average period was getting close to just 6 seconds, so we aren’t talking juicy.

The trend on the forecast models is showing Sydney bumping along at about this morning’s energy level through the day. So, if you have to wait until this afternoon and the low tide, your cause may not be totally hopeless. However, the wind will be wandering around from the south to east all day, which means quality will not likely be, shall we say, memorable.

Small favour to ask…  if you have the time, would you mind taking a look at realsurfauctions.com (see bottom right column on the page) and if you have any thoughts, I’d appreciate hearing them via the feedback form. Thanks in advance!

Early southerly makes its southern ends today

Posted on February 18th, 2011 in Long Reef.

There were some nice little fun waves yesterday afternoon after that storm around 5 – 6 pm.  The sun came out and I grabbed a few pics from out in front of the Lugga.  I was hoping that it would continue but the southerly hit around 1.30am.  Its overcast and Long Reef is just 2 -3 foot chop with that southerly blowin.  I checked out Dee Why and its about 2  to just 3 foot on the sets.  Forecast for the wind to turn onshore SE and the E swell to drop a little.  Forecast for swell early next week.
