Qld flood disaster fundraiser: Diggers, Thr 24 Feb

Posted on February 14th, 2011 in Can you help?, Good causes, Top stories.

“Bintang” from the forums has written in to tell us of a flood fundraiser his wife’s pulled together. Here’s his message:

My wife is organising a fundraiser for victims of Qld’s disasters. It’s at the Harbord Diggers on Thursday the 24th of Feb. It’s a dinner and dance with music by Carribean Soul(, the guys who played at the old Sands on a Sunday arvo). Ttickets are $60 with all proceeds going to Rotary. There are some awesome goodies donated for the silent auction. My wifes email is on the link. Could you put a little piece up for it? Otherwise I might put it on the forum. Cheers. Paul.

Oh you grey old windy sea

Posted on February 14th, 2011 in Big Picture.

Hello Friends,

A great Monday for Sydney surfers to be bouncing out the door to work or school. The ocean is looking pretty ordinary thanks to a steady supply of SSE wind and grey skies. The little SSE windswell is pretty much hammered even in the protected corners. The wind is set to go all day, so I’m not hopeful of any significant improvement.

Tomorrow’s not looking exceptionally flash either as the wind is set to go around to the east. So I wouldn’t be real hopeful of a decent wave. However the swell is set to bump up slightly. So if the Bureau’s call for E to NE on Wednesday is right, there may be something worth a trip to the beach. We shall see…

On another front, how would you like to have an ad on our front page for a month for super cheap? Go check out the auction here and be amazed at how little you could pay to promote your business to thousands of surfers every day.

Have yourself a good one!

Weather Situation
A high south of the Bight is moving slowly east, extending a ridge along the New South Wales coast, while a low pressure trough is situated off the northern coast. By early Tuesday the high is expected to be over the Tasman Sea, and the coastal trough should weaken. The approach of a cold front from the Southern Ocean towards the end of the week is likely to bring a southerly change to much of the coast.

Forecast for Monday until midnight
Winds: Southeasterly 10 to 20 knots. Seas: 1 to 2 metres. Swell: Southeasterly 1 metre.

Forecast for Tuesday
Winds: Easterly 15 to 20 knots. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres. Swell: Southeasterly about 1.5 metres.

Forecast for Wednesday
Winds: East to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots becoming northeasterly 15 to 20 knots during the evening. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres. Swell: Easterly about 2 metres.

Lumpy bumpy arvo.

Posted on February 14th, 2011 in Dee Why.

As Don put it this morning there is just a lumpy 2 foot wind swell at Long Reef and Dee Why.  The SSE wind has been blowing for what seems like days is just creating wind slop.  Not much happening and only for the most keen.  Surf Photos of You

Heavy sou’easterlies blowing into the whole stretch. I watched a handful of bods try in vain to scratch onto some choppy waist-high bumps. Disappointing

Grey, glassy and small …but surfable

Posted on February 13th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Another morning of gloomy skies (the Bureau says there’s an 80 percent chance of rain). The wind was light early, so that meant glassy knee to waist high plus sets at Dee Why from the small, short period SSE windswell. The wind is expected to push up into the 10-20 kt range by lunchtime, so the plan pretty obviously is to get out the door asap.

Outlook for the week ahead is lining up with the Goat’s forecast . Some of the models are calling for a little east pulse around Wednesday. But at this stage it doesn’t look like being much more than shoulder high at best – and there’ll be easterly wind with it.

Go well with your Sunday!

Weather Situation
A ridge of high pressure extends across the northern Tasman Sea to the Queensland coast, while a trough stretches over the central Tasman Sea into northeast New South Wales. Meanwhile, another high south of Western Australia is moving slowly eastwards and will push a strengthening ridge along the New South Wales coast later today as a cold front passes to the south. This high is expected to reach the Tasman Sea on Monday, and should maintain generally easterly winds along the coast until late in the week.

Forecast for Sunday until midnight
Winds: South to southwesterly 5 to 15 knots tending south to southeasterly 10 to 20 knots around midday. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing up to 1.5 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Southeasterly 1 to 1.5 metres.

Forecast for Monday
Winds: East to southeasterly 15 to 20 knots. Seas: 1.5 to 2 metres. Swell: Southeasterly about 1.5 metres.

Forecast for Tuesday
Winds: Easterly 15 to 20 knots increasing to 15 to 25 knots during the evening. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres increasing to 2 metres during the evening. Swell: Southeasterly about 1.5 metres.

No southerly for the early, but it’s coming

Posted on February 12th, 2011 in Big Picture.

Hello Friends,

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the Bureau’s overnight call for early morning southerlies wasn’t quite right. Early risers were treated to glassy, waist high sets at spots that like a bit of east. There’s nothing remarkable about the numbers (the MHL buoy is showing around a metre of 7 second east windswell), but there were definitely little waves to be had.

However, at 0730 when I was writing this, weather stations in the Illawarra were reporting 15-20 kts of south wind. So it’s coming.

Weather Situation
A high pressure system near New Zealand extends a ridge to the New South Wales north coast. A cold front is bringing a southerly change to the southern and central coasts today, but is expected to weaken over the north tonight. Another high pressure system will develop south of the Bight during the weekend, extending a ridge along the New South Wales coast behind the front.

Forecast for Saturday until midnight
Winds: An early morning southerly change 15 to 25 knots, reaching 30 knots at times, decreasing to 10 to 20 knots around midday. Winds easing further to around 10 knots in the evening. Seas: 1.5 to 2 metres decreasing to below 1 metre by evening. Swell: Easterly 1 metre. Isolated thunderstorms.

Forecast for Sunday
Winds: Southeast to southwesterly 5 to 10 knots tending east to southeasterly 15 to 25 knots around dawn. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the morning then increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Southeasterly 1.5 metres.

Forecast for Monday
Winds: East to southeasterly 15 to 20 knots. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres increasing to 2 metres during the morning. Swell: Southeasterly about 1.5 metres.

And it did come.

Posted on February 12th, 2011 in Long Reef.

Not long after Don’s report the southerly forced its way onto the beaches.  Long Reef is now just a blown out 2 foot mess.  There were a few brave souls searching for waves down past the Lugga.  But you have to be keen.  Its protected southern corners today.   Or take up Kiteboarding.  Enjoy Surf Photos of You.

As you were

Posted on February 11th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

A little breezy in Sydney as the latest south pulse gradually fades away – kinda like Hosni Mubarak over in Cairo. Huey switched off the swell engine off yesterday afternoon when the average period slumped from 11 seconds to a more typical 8 seconds in the space of about 8 hours. This morning finds us with about a metre of SE windswell washing weakly in. There were a few folk in the beachbreak at Dee Why and three or four optimists at the point. Sets are about waist high on the beach but it looks as though we still don’t have much in the way of banks as there are many shutdowns.

From the shape of this morning’s forecast models it looks to me as though we’re in for weak and marginal but not flat conditions. Wind is going to go around to the NE as the day unfolds and by this afternoon should be pushing along at a reasonable pace. But, it doesn’t look as though we’ll get much windswell out of it. There might be some junky chest high bomb sets at the most exposed spots toward dusk.

The weekend looks pretty so-so to me, but I’m hoping the Goat’s schedule will allow him to jump in later today with a few thoughts on the outlook…

Have yourself a top old day!

Weather Situation
A high pressure system over the southern Tasman Sea is slowly moving towards New Zealand maintaining a ridge to the New South Wales north coast. A cold front will bring a southerly change to the far south coast late Friday extending to the central coast on Saturday and weakening. Another high pressure system is expected to move south of the Bight during Saturday extending a ridge to the north coast behind the front.

Forecast for Friday until midnight
Winds: North to northeasterly 15 to 20 knots increasing to 20 to 25 knots by early evening. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Southerly 1 metre tending easterly about 1 metre during the evening.

Forecast for Saturday
Winds: Northerly 15 to 25 knots tending northwest to southwesterly 15 to 20 knots around dawn then tending southerly during the morning. Winds tending south to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots by early evening. Seas: Up to 2 metres. Swell: Easterly about 1.5 metres. The chance of thunderstorms from midday.
