Fun little waves..
Posted on February 11th, 2011 in Curl Curl.I dropped into North Curly this afternoon just to have a quick check. It was about knee to waist high but a few were making the most of the little walls on offer. I grabbed a few pics in the 20 mins I was there. Surf Photos of You.
Cold Pleasure (Pleasure Point)
Posted on February 11th, 2011 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions. In view of the tides today, I was open to surfing either Santa Cruz before work or Half Moon Bay after. Two of my buddies voted for the former, and we were to meet up at the Hook at dawn. The new groundswell hadn't come up as much as I'd expected, so the Hook was small, 38th had mere traces, and distant Pleasure Point looked like the happenin' spot. Quite a difference in the weather from my last session: both days were sunny, but on Sunday I stripped down to my bikini top as we walked to check the surf, whereas this morning it was a chill 38 degrees when I changed under my new Surf-Fur.Surfline: 2-3 ft+ occasionally 4 ft. Clean, lined-up, inconsistent peaks working through this morning. There are a few okay corners if you're in the right spot. A new longer period W-WNW (275-300+) groundswell is on the rise this morning as old WNW-NW swell-mix mixes in. Conditions are looking fairly clean through town with light NE winds 3-7kts. For the dawn patrol most breaks are good for knee-waist-chest high surf, with top exposures pulling in some inconsistent shoulder-head high sets. More size builds through the day. Buoy 46012: (Wave) SWELL: 6.9 ft at 16.0 s W 13 / WIND WAVE: 1.3 ft at 3.3 s WNW / WVHT: 6.9 ft / APD: 8.4 s / MWD: 270° (Met) WSPD: 4 kts / GST: 6 kts / WVHT: 6.9 ft / DPD: 16.0 s / WDIR: 20° / ATMP: 51.4° F / WTMP: 52.2° F. Tide: 2.5' falling below 1'.
Back to small.
Posted on February 11th, 2011 in Long Reef.Swell has dropped even further this morning. There are some 2 footers to be had a Longy. But its longboard material. May be a little bigger this arvo. Enjoy the beautiful conditions. Surf Photos of You.
Many Moods, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on February 11th, 2011 in Byron, Local Colour, Surf Reports.
It was mixed bag as Huey drove us through many and various weather patterns, in Byron bay today. It started off cool with south westerlies, bumpy lines and the threat of rain. We next had sunshine and clean offshore conditions for an hour or so. Soon after Huey threatened us all with a northerly as the waves lumped up again and the clouds gathered around the neighbouring hills. But it is all puff and no blow, and before long it settled down into a mild easterly as the car park rapidly filled for the afternoon show. It didn’t really matter which mood was scored they all had their pros and cons. What mattered was that despite a few greedy folks, most people made an effort to get out there and just get on, In Byron Bay Today.
A few at Longy
Posted on February 10th, 2011 in Long Reef.Mid-arvo update.
Went for a quick wave this morning at Long Reef. The NE’r was kicking in and the swell was fading but not gone. There were a few sets into the head high plus range and one or two with workable sections. And the water was warm. A good way to use a couple hours from the day.
The latest data from the MHL buoy is showing a couple metres still and it remains dead south. Since I left the beach a couple hours ago, the average period has bumped up to 11 seconds and there are still some 15 second sets in the mix. All of which says to me that there should still be waves at south spots that can cope with ENE-NE wind.
From the shape of the latest forecast models this pulse should continue its downward slope toward marginalness tomorrow – where I reckon it looks like staying into next week.
Have a good one!
Fading but not gone
Posted on February 10th, 2011 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Clean surface conditions this morning as yesterday’s south pulse backs off along Sydney’s beaches. If your favourite stretch of sand doesn’t like straight south, there’s no need to bother. If it does, you’re looking at mostly waist high with the odd sneaker into the chest high range. The trendlines are pointing downward, so I think we can expect the lulls to get longer and the sets to get smaller through the day. With luck though it shouldn’t die away to nothing at the exposed spots.
The wind is supposed to be light this morning and only in the 10-15kt range from NE later.
Next tide is a moderate high at about 1330, with the low hitting just before dark at 1940.
I got out and about with a camera yesterday, so I’ll have a few snaps to share later…
Finally, Tim Bonython has made another couple pairs of tix available to his Australian Surf Movie Festival shows at the Harbord Diggers on Friday and at Palmy RSL on Saturday. If you’d like a chance to get a pair to either show, just use the feedback link top right on the home page and send me the name of you and your friend along with a mobile number for me to confirm back.
Go well with your day!

Food Prices and Oil Prices
Posted on February 10th, 2011 in Environment. Not surfing-related, but interesting (to your webmaster, anyway).
Found this page by a guy named Paul Chefurka last night while browsing… worrisome… sadly.
Just for grins, I recently took the ten most recent years of world Food Price Index data from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the monthly average oil price from the US Energy Information Agency (EIA), and plotted them together. I’d never seen this done before, and I was interested to know if there was any correlation. Here’s the graph:

The thing that stunned me was the closeness of the correlation. For you math geeks, the correlation coefficient of the two data sets is 0.93!
The next thing that’s fascinating is that changes in the Food Price Index appear to lead changes in the price of oil by a few months. Since food prices don’t drive oil prices as far as I know, this implies that they are both responding to the same underlying situation, but that food prices are a more sensitive indicator.
The last thing that I noticed is the behaviour of food and oil prices in the last six months. The sharp rise in food prices is being noticed in the media now, but the graph hints that the story is just beginning.

PICS: Dee Why point, Wed. arvo
Posted on February 10th, 2011 in Don's surfin' pics, Top stories.
The south swell was near its peak when I got down to Dee Why with my camera. There were around 30 people on the point and bomb sets were shutting it down, so I grabbed a pozzie and started shooting. After a couple hours I’d filled my memory cards and the wind was starting to chew it up. Click the big picture below to go see all the pics… as usual, if you see one you’d like to buy, just click on it and look top left for the link to the picture size/price options.
