All Swell, In Byron Bay Today

Posted on February 10th, 2011 in Byron, Local Colour.

Everybody keeps walking around town talking of the swell that’s coming soon, in Byron bay today. Well maybe, maybe not. I haven’t really seen any indication in the charts of a massive rise in swell anywhere in the near future. I do suspect we may see a slight increase in wave heights as the swell swings a little more to the east over the next few days. But me I won’t be holding my breath on it. Who knows, not me, I’m not Huey that’s for sure. We’ll just have to wait and see, in the mean time, there’s some joyous little logger lines on offer and plenty of pleasant conditions for a slide, and as they say all’s well the ends well , In Byron Bay Today.

Little more on offer this morning

Posted on February 9th, 2011 in Dee Why.

1400: wind dropping, swell south at two metres with an average period of 12 seconds. I might go have another look in that case…

Hello Friends,

A number of folk in the water at Dee Why before 0700 this morning to chase the waist to chest high SSE swell. According to the MHL buoy it’s around the two metre mark at about 8 seconds apart. For close to a week the swell prediction has been calling for this uptick, but it had also been showing a longer period. So I had a look at the MHL buoy from down at Eden and sure enough, a long period pulse arrived around midday. It’s still showing and it’s around the 14 second mark. And when I jumped back to check the MHL Sydney buoy, whadya know, it just hit in the last hour or so. All of which suggests to me that there is at least the chance of the odd rogue set turning up in the mix today.

There wasn’t much in the way of wind to start, but it should go south during the morning and swing more onshore later. The Bureau says there’s a 40% chance of rain too.

BTW, I have a couple pairs of tix to give away to the surf movies at the Diggers on Friday and at Palmy RSL on Saturday evening. Use the feedback link top right of our main page to let me know if you’re interested. I’ll need your name, your guest’s name and a contact mobile to confirm back.

Have a good one!

Tide is high at 1245 or so and the next low will be along t 1900.

3 – 4 foot on offer..

Posted on February 9th, 2011 in Dee Why, Surf Reports.

There is a 3 – 4ft SE swell on offer this morning.  The wind is from the south so the northern ends will be bumpy and wind effected.  A small crew searching for waves out in front of the Lugga at Long Reef.  Dee Why Point had a few waves and there is still that little inside section before it shuts down.  Enjoy  Surf Photos of You. Arvo update:  The swell picked to around 5+ at Long Reef.  It looked like there may be some banks forming with this pulse.  Lets hope so. Dee Why Point had a few waves this afternoon between 4 – 5pm.

Steely Grey, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on February 9th, 2011 in Byron, Local Colour.

The cool southerly blow is still upon us carrying plenty of light misty rain, a heavy cloud bank and steely grey light, in Byron Bay today. There a folks walking around getting unhappy about being cold in summer, but I got to say I kind of like this weather when it’s just for a few days. It cools us all down, mellows people’s moods and waters the entire flora in and around the bay. Which when all is said and done, it’s not a bad thing if folks mellow a little while the plants get a sprits’. There were some nice tasty waves for those who bothered to look beyond the obvious and a few clean slides at the better known spots too. All in all despite the grey light and constant drizzle, it was a sweet, mellow and relaxing kind of day, In Byron Bay Today.

Looking mighty tiny

Posted on February 8th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Rather small at Dee Why centre when I grabbed the snap this morning a little after 0730. There were two folk bobbing about in the low and glassy SSE swell. Out at sea it’s around the metre mark at about 8 seconds apart, so there isn’t much prospect of anything bigger coming in for awhile yet.

The wind is set to pick up later and by this evening we should see 15-20 kts of southerly across Sydney’s beaches. So I wouldn’t be expecting much in the way of an improvement to surf prospects today.

Wednesday should see a small uptick in energy levels as a long period south pulse briefly brushes past Sydney. It looks like the best hope will be for the early in the south corners as we’re set to have 15-20 kts of S-SE wind and the swell pulse could drop away pretty quickly if the models have it right. Tide will be low but coming in, so that could be helpful.

Thursday and Friday look like marking points along a declining graph that’s heading toward flatness for Friday

Couple other things to mention, first if you’d like to check out Tim Bonython’s 2011 Australian Surf Movie Festival I have a few pairs of tix to give away for the Friday Harbord Diggers show the 11th at 8pm and Saturday the 12th at 8pm at Palm Beach RSL. Tim says the live music for both nights will be provided by Juzzie Smith.

Dee Why: Slumbering

Posted on February 8th, 2011 in Surf Reports.

Quiet day on the water around Dee Why this morning. The water is virtually empty at 0800, bar a few swimmers and a couple of blokes who were clearly in it just for the paddle.

Too straight and tiny.

Posted on February 8th, 2011 in Long Reef.

That southerly swell drummed up by wind on Sunday and early Monday has dropped back to about 1 – 2 foot.  Not much happening down at Longy .  One keen surfer out early.  At least he had all the waves to himself.  Surf Photos of You.

The Waiting Game, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on February 8th, 2011 in Byron, Local Colour.

You know it’s been so long since we had any cool weather that it was kind of confusing to wake up and find it cloudy, grey and really quite cool, in Byron Bay today. Ah yes that’s right methinks, the southerly change we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived. But as with most southerlies that hit the bay their first order of business is to blow the north east swell clean away. Then the waiting game begins, when will the new swell arrive, will we see it before evening, maybe tomorrow? Or will it be a sneaky pulse that rises to a clean overhead swell under the midnight moon teasing us with white noise as snore under ours doons. Only time will tell, and until then, it’s the waiting game as we wait for swell, In Byron Bay Today.

Grey, that’s new

Posted on February 7th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Swell is dead south after yesterday’s change, and as the day got started it was coming down from hitting a peak of 4 metres at 10 sec during the dark hours. At 0700 it was still chuffing along at 3 metres and close to 10 sec. That’s more vigorous than the models had originally projected but the reality is nothing like you’d expect from the numbers. Although it was lightly offshore this morning, there weren’t too many people in the water at Dee Why. The problem was that the swell wasn’t really working and even the biggest sets were struggling to deliver head high wave faces. And mostly it was much smaller than that. Every now and then a catchable one hit the point, but you needed a SUP or a mal to have much of a shot.

Went up to North Narrabeen to get another fix on the swell and discovered three or four extra keen types (in wetties because of the cool air temps) trying to extract something from what was really a chaotic situation. Like Dee Why it wasn’t all that big in the corner (it was a bit more solid at carparks, but unsurfable), and worse, waves would pop up and then double or cancel out as earlier waves bounced back into the oncoming swell.

A bit of a disappointment one would have to say.

Outlook is for the downward trend to continue through the day as the swell fizzles out to near flatness for tomorrow morning. However, according to the models, this should just be a brief lull as a new long period south pulse fills in. The pulse looks like peaking during the night hours but it should still be around on Wednesday morning.

Here’s hoping…

Go well with your day!
