Now That’s Better, In Byron Bay Today.

Now That’s Better, In Byron Bay Today. Left Yoko at home looking pretty worse for wear to head out and shoot a few shots, in Byron Bay today. Found some crew getting into a few lumpy but sweet little lines, and proceeded to get some work done. Then suddenly methinks, stuff it, I seriously need to get wet too. So I paddled out and slid on into a few. What a joy it was to have a crowd that was behaving in a functional manner. No hassle, not hustle just noted respect for each other as we all stroked into our fair share for an hour two, man that felt so good, in Byron Bay today.

Glassy, sunny start to the day. Waist-high weak bumps abound

Small, small, small …but not totally flat

Posted on March 16th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

A light WNW breeze and a small south windswell greeted early risers at Dee Why this morning. According to the MHL buoy data the average height of the swell at sea is around the 2.5 metre mark, but the average period was a touch under 8 seconds, so it will be quite directional (ie, the best spots will be the most optimally exposed). There were a few bods having a cut at the soft conditions near Dee Why centre but about the best wave I saw was in the waist high range. It might be a bit bigger at the other end of the beach.

This morning’s tide is a low at around 1145 and the high at 1745 or so will be a factor for the late afternoon crew.

Outlook if for the wind to swing south as a change comes through around lunchtime. The Bureau says we can then look forward to winds from the southern quarters for the rest of the working week. And the models are currently predicting only low energy levels across the same period. The hoped for weekend pulse has been scaled back. The latest reckoning is it’ll be small but quite long period. With luck Saturday morning will have a few options at south swell spots, but it’s now looking as though chest high under cloudy skies is being optimistic.

Once again, the very long range forecasts are showing another solid looking south swell event forming up toward the end of next week. I only note this with interest as it is really in the realm of speculation.

On a more substantive note, I heard recently from my contact at MHL that they are planning to update their buoy network and that in future all of them will be reporting directional data as well as period and height. This is a good thing for weather nerds like yours truly because we can get a better idea of how swell is moving up or down the coast.

Have yourself a top old day!

Weather Situation
A trough is likely to bring a southerly change for the southern and central coast today. A high pressure ridge will build along the coast behind the trough and will persist until Friday.

Small and smooth on the Central Coast this morning.  1 – 2 feet of glassy small waves from the east.

Evening Shades, In Byron Bay Today

Posted on March 16th, 2011 in Byron.

We decided to hold off for the day and head out to shoot during the evening shades, in Byron Bay today. Wave wise, it was a good call, the crew were on it and Huey was turning on that autumn light that we all love so much. Granted the car park was gridlocked, but hey at this time of year on a day like this? Well to expect anything less is to live in fantasy land. Be that as it may, once we’d managed to secure a mortgage on a car space, through some slick negotiations, and the willingness to leave a tissue sample, it was off to shoot. The waves were a joy and the crew were frothing all over the place, for a few moments the session almost descended into complete anarchy. But thankfully somehow sanity prevailed, folks lightened up and the crew began to wail as Huey drew down the evening shades, In Byron Bay Today.

A few small ones around this morning

Posted on March 15th, 2011 in At large, Dee Why, North Narrabeen.

Hello Friends,

We’re in for a southerly day, but this morning started out reasonably glassy with little south windswell waves to be found. I saw some waist high waves plus waves along the No Man’s to Dee Why stretch and a few somewhat smaller ones at North Narrabeen. The MHL buoy shows the average height of the swell at sea to be around the 2.5 metre mark. The reason it’s much smaller than that is because the average period is only 7 seconds.

Tide’s going to drop through the morning, but it’s set to be SE by midday. However, the Bureau says it’ll go around to the NE later, so just maybe there’ll be something of interest in the north corners toward dark.

This morning’s run of the swell models continues to show modest conditions for our region across the rest of the working week. However, Saturday is still showing a juicy southern ocean swell arriving. Unfortunately the wind call is for easterlies and the weather is likely to be cloudy with a few showers.

Have yourself a great day and keep on smilin’

A few bods out getting short bumpy shut downs. The good news is the swell has perked up to about shoulder high. The bad news is it’s still pretty weak and the southerlies are up

Hope, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on March 15th, 2011 in Byron.

What can I say? Both Yoko and I have been floored by the generosity of spirit from our friends and well wishers, in Byron Bay today. Thanks guys. So it’s a joy to share some good news, we had confirmation today that Yoko’s Mum, Sister, Dad & Aunt survived the Quake and Tsunami in Sendai. We don’t actually know where they are, or what condition they are in, but her sister managed to get a short message out that they are indeed alive. They have a long and difficult road ahead, and other family members and friends are still missing. But that’s a bloody good start by anyone’s reckoning so we move on with hope. Now as for our neck of the woods, well we’re kind of tired and worn out be got out to shoot, and we found that there were some pretty tasty waves on offer in the bay. We didn’t get amongst it ourselves, but it was good to get back to some sort of sense of normalcy, In Byron Bay Today.

Sunny Monday morning with not much happening

Posted on March 14th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

It was calm as Monday got started, but the Bureau says the wind will be out of the south to SE around noon as a south change comes through. By this evening the call is for 20-25 of south to SE wind. Early risers were greeted with weak and small easterly conditions. No one was in the water at the Dee Why end of the beach when I grabbed a snap at 0800.

Once the wind arrives, there should be some south windswell with it, but the quality is going to be ordinary at exposed places where it’s biggest, and given the short period of the windswell, I wouldn’t expect to find much of anything in the protected south corners.

So the plan is to take your most optimistic attitude, your floatiest surfing tool and get out the door asap this morning.

From the shape of this morning’s run of the swell forecast models, it looks as though the week ahead will be generally small and weak. Out at the limits of the models, the forecast is currently showing quite a large and intense system swinging around from the southern ocean into the Tasman at the weekend. It looks like it could be a big one too. These forecasts generally turn out to be rather optimistic (from a surf perspective!), so I’d just be penciling in the south swell spots for Saturday at this stage. BTW, if it turns out to be as intense as currently forecast, our friends on the other side of the pond in Mexico and southern California could be looking at some tasty southern hemi swell…

Roll on with your day and may it all go well!

Swell: Easterly 1.5 metres becoming about 1.5 metres from the late morning. Isolated thunderstorms in the late morning and afternoon.

Forecast for Tuesday
