Bigger.
Posted on April 21st, 2011 in Long Reef.Afternoon update: The swell has dropped a little from this morning. Still waist to chest high. There were some nice fun waves down at Longy and I guess else where just on the 10.49am high. After that it seemed to drop a little. Mrs SurfPhotosofYou grabbed a few pics down at Longy getting into some fun. Morning: Another beautiful day in Sydney this morning. SE swell is a little bigger than it was yesterday. Wind from WSW making conditions nice and smooth. Waves out the Bomby and down the beach. Enjoy Surf Photos of You

Posted on April 21st, 2011 in At large, California, Santa Barbara.Hello Friends,
After a quick and unusually smooth 13 hr flight, I’m jetlagged in California. I’ll try to make myself useful from afar. So, according to the latest from the MHL buoy, Sydney’s looking at around a metre of SSE swell with an average period of 10 seconds and light westerly wind as of about 0750. Next tide is a high around 1045. Sadly, that combo is not likely to be producing much of note. South exposed spots might get the odd waist high set I’d guess.
Meanwhile, over on this side of the pond the situation in southern California is similarly uninspiring. Tis the season of fog. The skies were grey and the surf was weak and small – but not flat. I saw people chasing waist high slo-mo rollers at Trancas and Malibu as we headed north on PCH. About the biggest was at County Line where every now and then a chest high set would move slowly in through a lightly wind textured sea. I took a couple pics for you to add to the postcard collection.
Have yourself a good one!

Scraping the bottom of the barrel
Posted on April 21st, 2011 in Manly.POST SURF UPDATE 7:30am; Deja vu The tide is actually pulsing in the odd rideable waist high set that had a sth groundy feel. I might be stretching things but now (early) is the time to have a crack with your best small wave weapon. Don’t blame me if it’s gone by the time you get there though
DAWN REPORT: Its really is tiny now at Manly but with another perfect morning I’m desperate to find something. If you wait (and wait) there are one foot sets that have a sth angle to them which makes me think the sth magnets could be rideable for the desperate. As usual keen punters out at dawn at Manly struggling as 70% of the beach looks like a lake. We have the incoming tide again to squeeze more life into it which at some point will produce a ride that could keep a punter happy for the day. Good luck!
Magic Morning (Cowells)
Posted on April 21st, 2011 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Reports, Surf Sessions. Flexing my work schedule in anticipation of a late night, I was able to take the morning off and get in a more leisurely almost-dawn patrol. With a south swell in the water and the tide negative more than a foot, Cowells was the call. I met up with Luke and his newbie dad before paddling out and again in the water.I brought Magic, my 8'0" hybrid longboard, and that was also a good call. The waves were waist- to chest-high with workable flat sections, and I needed the extra length and foam to get into and stay on them. It took no time for me to dial back into the longer board, but it sure doesn't turn like my 7'0" Emm. Despite the crowd and some lengthy lulls, I got some nice long rides and a big ol' heap of stoke!
| Luke's dad was a little tippy. We've all been there. |
Dee Why today: Quiet. VERY quiet
Posted on April 20th, 2011 in Surf Reports.Lucky the situation at Bells today is better than what’s on offer at Dee Why.
Check out the live action on the web at Bells from the Rip Curl Pro. When I tuned in a few minutes ago, Dee Why’s own legend, Toby Martin was doing live commentary at the beach. Awesome conditions too!
50 Year Anniversary of the RipCurl Pro at Bells this year!

Suns gone.
Posted on April 20th, 2011 in Long Reef.If you woke up late you missed another beautiful morning before the clouds moved in from the south. The swell has moved out to be only about 1 foot. Conditions are nice and glassy with hardly any wind. Few keen souls working hard at Longy to find some value. Surf Photos of You
Not missing much
Posted on April 20th, 2011 in Big Picture.Hello Friends,
I’ve got an hour to kill waiting for the big bus to California, so I’ve had a quick squizz at the buoy data for Sydney. Not a pretty picture it has to be said. Swell’s out of the E by ENE at about 8 seconds apart. Average size at sea is a paltry metre – and the trend appears to be heading downward. Probably the best thing to do at this point is to head off to Vicco. Looks like they’re going to be getting some serious swell over the next couple days. Sydney’s looking decidedly ordinary on the other hand.
Ah well… if it makes you feel any better, I’ve just looked at the conditions where I’m heading and it’s not looking too likely that I’ll have anything to crow about. In fact it looks just as uninteresting in southern California as it does here. So it goes.
Have yourself a great day and if you must get wet, I’d be taking the biggest, floatiest object in the quiver.

Posted on April 20th, 2011 in Surf Reports. What little is left of the swell is being mopped up by longboards along the Bate Bay stretch this morning. Glassy but cold, waist-high but lacking energy
Not much left but you never know
Posted on April 20th, 2011 in Manly.
POST SURF: So it did pulse a little producing waist high sets with the odd good shape. Worth a paddle still (but maybe not out to the shark nets like I did)
There’s not a lot left at Manly this morning. Knee to thigh high sets with some East in the direction. However lately it seems to just become better on the incoming tide and the shapes been pretty good so I don’t want to write it off completely yet. Super clean, offshore and a another perfect Autumn morning sunrise so not a bad way to start the day floating around in these conditions. (Maybe take something that floats better than others though)
