Big, In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Review.

Posted on April 17th, 2011 in Byron.

It’s been a big week in the bay, big sunny days, good waves, huge sunsets and a just a couple of large-ish attitudes in the lineup in Byron Bay this week. It’s all par for the course of course when it comes to school holidays. The kids have been lucky with perfect weather and almost as good waves to this point which is cool. Sure the crowds have been a little ‘out there’ at times thanks to a minority of greedy individuals. But that’s the exception rather than the rule, and it seems so far that most folks are remembering that it’s not a comp out there which is great. By letting the occasional wave go to someone else, most of the time it’s keeping it all running pretty smooth thus far. Some weather is most likely going to move in from the south this weekend and bring rain, but that’s up to Huey not me, and as Queensland is now officially on school holidays I suspect we’ll see things get even a little bigger this coming week, In Byron Bay Today.

Numbers and letters.

Posted on April 16th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Think back 24 hours…. Beautiful and sunny light off shore SWtr blowing 2 -3 foot.  The numbers and letters have changed dramatically.  There is a stiff S-SSE 20-26 knot gale blowing this morning.  The SE swell is now at 3 – 4 foot but very messy even at the southern ends.  Throw in lots of rain, and you have…. Saturday.  Another weekend of either no surf or poor conditions.  I grabbed a few pics at Dee Why before another passing shower.  Surf Photos of You.

Waves, wind, rain–plenty of all three today.

Not much need for any descriptors today: Here’s the story in two pictures:

Bleugh! Looks pretty crook. Grey, messy & windy. I saw a few bods braving the conditions, but didn’t see any actual surfing going on

A morning to sleep in, maybe later

Hello Friends,

A particularly heavy shower rattled down on the roof tiles just after I grabbed the pic at around 0645. Just kinda underlined the yuck factor. The south swell is a couple metres on average and the period is close to 11 seconds. But Dee Why was a grey, undistinguished mess thanks to 20-30 kts of SSE wind. Eminently missable, but there were still a few bods in the water catching the odd messy and burgery little peak. Admittedly I could only watch for a few minutes before having to seek cover, but from where people were sitting in the water, I’d be surprised if the sets were much above shoulder high – if that.

The junky and horrible conditions look like continuing through tomorrow before we retun to partly cloudy and dry with light winds on Monday.  My fingers are crossed for some little waves to be around on Monday morning because if the latest run of the models has any basis in fact, we’re in for a stretch of minorness after that.

Ah well, keep on smilin’, life’s an adventure.

Grab it while you can

Hello Friends,

From the weather forecast last night, I thought it might be cloudy and showery by this morning. But no, it’s really quite nice looking down at Dee Why as a couple metres of south swell at 9 seconds delivers the odd shoulder-head high set. Seemed to be a bit of a wait for them, but it wasn’t too bad. The wind was out of the west to SW around the beaches of Sydney, so I’d say south swell spots ought to be going along pretty nicely.  Tide is dropping too and water temperature has climbed to 23 degrees (well, out at the MHL buoy off Sydney anyway).

I’d be getting into it if I could as tomorrow looks as though it might be wind affected thanks to 15-25 kts of s to se’ly.

Will try to check back later today if the schedule permits. Go well!

Weather Situation

A slow moving high pressure ridge southwest of Tasmania and a low moving east across the southern Tasman Sea will combine to direct south to southeast winds along the New South Wales coast into the weekend. As a high shifts slowly east into the Tasman Sea on Sunday and Monday, winds will turn north to northwesterly in the south early next week.

Forecast for Friday until midnight

Winds: South to southwesterly 15 to 20 knots. Seas: 1.5 to 2 metres. Swell: Southeasterly 1.5 metres. The chance of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

Forecast for Saturday

Winds: South to southeasterly 15 to 25 knots increasing to 20 to 30 knots by early evening. Seas: 1.5 to 2 metres increasing to 3 metres by early evening. Swell: Southeasterly about 2 metres. The chance of thunderstorms, mainly offshore.

Forecast for Sunday

Winds: South to southeasterly 15 to 25 knots easing to 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon. Seas: 1.5 to 2 metres decreasing to below 1 metre during the afternoon. Swell: Southeasterly 2 to 3 metres easing to 1.5 metres in the evening.

Oh well… enough alliteration… (big word, hope I spelled it right:)

Tuesday: about 1-2 metres East South East.

Wednesday: about 1 metre East.

Thursday: about 1 metre East South East.

Good Friday: less than 1 metre East South East.

Easter Saturday: up from the South, say about 2 metres at places that get dead South swell, but with ordinary wind and weather.

Historical fact>>> cause we like to keep you informed and edjucated (and I just happened to be reading about it :)

On the morning of 19 April 1770 (that’ll be 241…someone check my maths… years ago next Tuesday) Lt Zachery Hicks on Cook’s ship Endeavour became the first recorded European to spot the East Coast of Australia.. at…Point Hicks… (though surprisingly it wasn’t called that then)…  Where’s that??  Check it out on a map – I’m not going to spoon feed you…  But I will say that TG has had a swim in the ocean close by there, and the water is quite cool.

Contrary to popular misconception, Cook expected to bump into the East Coast around that spot because he guessed that’s where it should be, based on Tasman’s earlier maps from the 1600s of the bottom bit and Tasmania (which surprisingly also wasn’t called that then)…  The fact that Cook pretty much expected it to be there doesn’t reduce the signficance of the find and his navigational skills.

The weather in 1770 was similar to this week - wet weather, gales, followed by moderate winds…

Cookie and the boys then proceeded to cruise up the uncharted coast, checking out all the surf spots… but that’s another story…

Bunnies! (Dunes)

Posted on April 15th, 2011 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Reports, Surf Sessions.
Pink sunrise
I was hoping that Dunes would offer up some decent waves this morning since I haven't surfed there in a while, and it delivered: shoulder-high plus and pretty clean with little wind, but a bit inconsistent and mushy on the high tide although the drops could be steep. My dawn patrol surf posse came together too: Darren; his friend Noah, newly transplanted from SW Florida; J-Bird and Jacob; and old man Luke, celebrating his 30th birthday today. I arrived at first light and walked past many shy brush rabbits on my way to check the surf, shivering in the barely 40-degree air. (It felt more like January than April.) After tweeting the surf report to my buddies, I suited up and paddled out alone, trying not to think of the S-word.
J-Bird escapes just in time

There was a nice rip current to take me to the empty peak with relative ease, but other currents pushing south and outside made it hard to stay lined up. Just before the others joined me, I caught a sweet head-high right from the outer bar, working it past some flat humps into a smaller reform over the inner bar before it mushed out inside of the shorepound. Woot! I took another rip back out to the lineup but couldn't top my ride of the day, instead experiencing some fabulous wipeouts and humbling underwater tumbles.
Not worth standing, Darren?

Fun rides were had by all, including the birthday boy. Stoked smiles all around!

Surfline: A swamped-out combo of leftover NW (300-310+) swell-mix and trace SSW (190-200) groundswell is in the water this morning. Better breaks offer up chest-shoulder-head high surf, with some larger sets for top NW exposures. Winds are light, but most breaks are still looking poor to fair at best thanks to some residual lump/bump and a building tide that peaks just after 8am. Buoy 46012: (Wave) SWELL: 5.6 ft at 10.8 s NW 31 / WIND WAVE: 1.0 ft at 4.0 s WNW / WVHT: 5.6 ft / APD: 7.7 s / MWD: 311° (Met) WSPD: 8 kts / GST: 10 kts / WVHT: 5.6 ft / DPD: 11.0 s / WDIR: 340° / ATMP: 50.0° F / WTMP: 53.1° F. Tide: above 4 ft.

Bigger with bump.

Posted on April 15th, 2011 in Long Reef.

The swell has increased a little from the SE.  Longy is about 2 – 3 foot but the SW wind is into it abit making the conditons some what bumpy.  There are waves all along the beach but it is bigger at the Poles.  Make the most of the sun before the change.  Looks like a S swell with S winds for the weekend.  I also managed to venture down to Queenscliff and grabbed a few pics from a round 1 heat of the Volcom ProAm.  Surf Photos of You

New South Swell

Posted on April 15th, 2011 in Surf Reports.

Nice day out there and there’s a new south swell wandering it’s way into Sydney. Not much of a crowd early on but it’s growing quickly.
