A scruffy morning
Posted on May 31st, 2011 in Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
ESE 20-30 knots. Need I say more? Swell is out of the SE and up to 3 metres, but the period is only about 8 seconds so combined with the wind, the ocean is a real mess. I suppose it might be possible to get in the water in a very protected corner, but that short period means most of the energy won’t be refracting into the sheltered zones. The heavy rain yesterday – and more due today – will have turned the ocean into a less than delightful soup of stormwater runoff.
The blasting wind is set to continue from the SE through tomorrow, before backing off a little – but staying onshore – on Thursday.
Again this morning the forecast models are pointing toward Friday-Saturday being fun. The swell should be a couple metres and around to the east with periods close to the 10 second mark. Throw in light offshores and it could be very good indeed. I know it’s just a forecast… but one can dream!
Have yourself a great day!

Strange Winds
Posted on May 31st, 2011 in Manly.Seems strange to have winds that aren’t freezing but that’s the howling onshore Easterly for ya. Blowing in an ugly 4ft+ of junk windswell. A couple days forecasted of this crap then looks like Friday could be the goods. Nowhere to hide in these conditions really so be patient.
Cold Turkey, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on May 31st, 2011 in Byron.
No not me, there’s nothing really left for me to give up these days other than a much loved caffeine habit, in Byron Bay today. Rather I refer to the shivering Bush Turkeys all fluffing their feathers to avoid the cold in the bay. Huey saw fit, to blast us with a blow that froze the dangly bits off any unsuspecting person caught out in it today. Of course this is not that unusual for the north coast, even is some folks think it doesn’t get cold here. Sure we can occasionally get warm balmy days in winter, it does happen. But right now, as the southerlies continue to howl its cold Turkeys, chilly Chooks, frozen Fruit Bats and some a very cool crew, In Byron Bay Today.

Hello Friends,
Steady rain and low visibility to start the day, so all I can tell you at the moment is that the swell at sea is still SE and around the two metre mark, but the average period has dropped from 10 to 8 seconds (although there’s still some 14 second component in amongst it). There’s around 20 kts of southerly as of 0715 and the forecast says it’ll be moving around to the SE later. Not the best.
From the shape of the forecast this morning, we’re in for junky SE’ly wind and on again off again showers through close of play Wednesday.
I managed to go shooting at the weekend and will have a couple fresh galleries from yesterday to post later this morning.
Have a good one!

Pics by Don: south Curly, Sun 29 May, midday
Posted on May 30th, 2011 in Curl Curl, Don's surfin' pics, Top stories.Sunday was clouded up and threatening to rain but there was a nice juicy dose of SE swell and a few spots were lighting up. One of them was the south end of Curl Curl, so I grabbed myself a pozzy just north from the club and spent an hour or so catching the action.

Posted on May 30th, 2011 in Dee Why, Don's surfin' pics, Top stories.Despite the grey skies there were fun waves to be had at Dee Why on Sunday morning. Heaps of folk were in the water and there were a fair number of shutdowns, but during my shooting session (from around 10-11) I managed to capture a reasonable number of regular folks at their peak moments. As always, just click on the picture to jump to the complete gallery of shots.
Dee Why: Enough already! La Nina–go away!
Posted on May 30th, 2011 in Surf Reports.Knee deep in bucketing rain today. Sympathy to all the motorbike riders around the city. Not enough that it’s cold, dumping rain and a howling southerly–now there’s hail. No signs that I can see of the La Nina pattern abating. I don’t know what data the TV weather people are looking at but it must not be the same data I see.

Keen Souls
Posted on May 30th, 2011 in Manly. Some Monday mornings it’s pumping and uncrowded. And there’s Mondays like today where it’s pretty crap and still a couple of dozen keen souls having a crack in the rain. Barely 1-2ft and a bit weak looking. Offshore at sth end.
The Lottery, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on May 30th, 2011 in Byron.
So it was that Huey was feeling a tad indecisive and unpredictable, in Byron Bay today. We had it all, the wind managed to touch all points of the compass at various stages of the day. The sun shone, the rain came down, there were moments of swell, and some small spells as well. The simple fact is that the conditions were pretty much a mixed bag, not to mention the crowd as well. Some moments it was really quiet, at other times it was downright silly. When was best and when was not was more a matter of luck than anything else, it was lottery really. Those that scored were lucky and those who didn’t, well better luck next time around, In Byron Bay Today.
