Puff And Blow, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on May 26th, 2011 in Byron, Surf Reports.
Well the BOM had us all worked up expecting 40kts+ today. Yet it turned out to be little more than a bit of puff and blow, in Byron bay today. Hmm kind of like a politicised business lobby group really, but I digress. Huey threatened but never really delivered. We saw small swell and plenty of sunshine before an afternoon front slowly moved in providing the occasional 20 – 25knt gust, this quickly wound back to a gentle breeze early this evening. Huey did however blast the crew further down the south coast today. Also, the bureau still claims we’ll see gale force wind here anytime soon. I suspect whether we see the big blow or not, we can expect to see some wild swell soon enough on the open beaches, so maybe it’s best to exercise a little caution at the moment. As further down south it’s been blowing strong and hard for at least twenty four hours now so it’s only a matter of time before that swell drives on past us here, In Byron Bay Today.
Dee Why: Rumble, rumble
Posted on May 25th, 2011 in Surf Reports.Lots of activity in the meteorologic realm overnight has churned up some waves at Dee Why, but with about 25 knots of SW wind on it–as you’d expect–it’s not the best of conditions. Having said that though, there are guys getting some decent waves out there amongst the chaos.
Kinda windy

Hello Friends,
1030: Out and about on errands this morning so as promised I took the camera along. Sadly there really wasn’t much of interest to snap at Curly. It was big and chunderous on the sets, but it was too messy and sideshore to have attracted any punters. Later, I went by south Narrabeen to see what was happening. Not much as it turns out. The short average period and south direction of the swell have insured that it’s only about chest high – if that – on the occasional sets. If the swell was right, the surface conditions wouldn’t be a problem… The MHL data shows the swell is 4m dead south with a period of close to 9 seconds, so the south spots should be working – but only if they’re okay with 30 kts of SW’ly!
0800: Dark grey skies and 20-40 kts of SW wind kicked off proceedings this morning in Sydney. The MHL buoy shows the swell at around the 4 metre mark, but the seas are closer to 7 metres now (having just hit a peak of 9m). Visibility as I write this is still too low to really tell what’s going on. Our man on the strand in Dee Why is on the case, so there should be some news from Rob shortly.
I’ll try to get out and about for a look at things soon and will report back later in the morning.

Posted on May 25th, 2011 in Manly.A wild morning for the hardcore fans. Solid 4-5ft of swell getting into Manly with a howling SW wind that is blowing things out a bit. A couple of guys braving it. Huge out to sea. The swell and wind is supposed to ramp up more during the day with 100kmph wind warnings for Sydney. So tuck tight into those protected south corners and hold onto your board as you walk down the beach.

Welcome Back! Have an Ice Cream Headache (HMB Jetty)
Posted on May 25th, 2011 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions. After last week's tropical surf morsels, I was itching to put on my wetsuit and plunge back into the chilly waters of NorCal. Although I was first in the lot at the Jetty shortly past dawn, a longboarder who came rubberized beat me into the water. Luke turned up when I was just about to head out, and we paddled into the 50-degree surf together. There were lots of fun waves to be had, going up to head-high, although they were a bit jumbled and doubled-up. I let Luke take the longer rights while I rode the quick lefts, and got some nice drops and short but sweet rides. Turtle-rolling was an invitation to an ice-cream headache, and too soon I started to feel the creeping chill numbing my extremities. The crowd was growing on the main peak, and I paddled father from the jetty to have a wave all to myself. I rode one through a little reform in close to the beach, and though I had a bit more time, realized I was just too cold to go back for more. When next I surf, I may have to break out my 5/4 wetsuit for the first time this season - a cold spring indeed, thanks to strong winds pulling icy water from the depths.
There's still no better way to start the day than with a cup of stoke, even if it's icy cold!
Hello Sunshine, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on May 25th, 2011 in Byron.
Egad what’s the big bright shiny thing in the sky, oh yeah I remember now, it’s the sun, and it’s been shining brightly all day, in Byron Bay today. Huey must’ve been paying attention, as many folks were getting kind of sick of the grey and the rain. Before we all get too excited though, its forecast to blow a gale with more clouds and rain over the next twenty four hours or so in the bay. But that has not happened just quite yet, and right now there are a whole lot of people quietly smiling to themselves. We’ve had some joyous uncrowded waves, light winds, warmth and a much needed dose of vitamin D courtesy of Huey shining it down brightly, In Byron Bay Today.
Technically speaking it’s not perfectly flat

Hello Friends,
Nothing to surf on this morning at Dee Why and from the look of the BoM data there isn’t likely to be anything in the way of a major change today (although it has to be said some of the models are calling for some sizable stuff before dark).
Tomorrow promises to be a little different however. The Bureau says we can expect 30-40 kts of S to SW wind and along with it an increase in wave energy. The Bureau is saying seas will be 3 to 4 metres on top of a metre of NE swell. I’ll be interested to see what that looks like, but according to this chart from the Bureau of Meterology that means total wave heights could be around 3 to 4 metres.
The various riffs on the WAMs are calling for about that size at Sydney’s south exposed spots all day tomorrow but the wind will be pretty crazy.
On current reckoning, the energy levels are set to drop pretty quickly through Thursday and the wind will still be going hard. But come Friday morning when the winds should be lighter and the skies sunny again, I’m hoping for waist to chest at exposed spots.
Have yourself a top old Tuesday one and all!
Weather Situation
A cold front/trough system has moved through New South Wales and a low pressure system will develop on the front over the Tasman Sea today and Wednesday . This will bring strengthening south to southwesterly winds along the southern half of the coast today, affecting the remainder of the coast on Thursday and increasing further to Gale Force . Winds will gradually decrease as the low weakens and moves southeast towards New Zealand on Thursday.Forecast for Tuesday until midnight
Winds: West to southwesterly 15 to 20 knots becoming southwesterly 15 to 25 knots by early evening then increasing to 20 to 30 knots later in the evening. Seas: 1 to 2 metres increasing to 2 to 3 metres later in the evening. Swell: Northeasterly about 1 metre.Forecast for Wednesday
Winds: South to southwesterly 30 to 40 knots. Seas: 3 to 4 metres. Swell: Easterly about 1.5 metres.Forecast for Thursday
Winds: Southerly 20 to 30 knots tending southwesterly 15 to 25 knots during the evening. Seas: Up to 3 metres. Swell: Southeasterly 2 to 3 metres.
We all agree….. its flat.
Posted on May 24th, 2011 in Long Reef.Yes, up and down the Northern Beaches it is flat. One foot at best. Nice conditions though. A cool Autumn offshore breeze making the water surface nice and smooth. Anyhow a change is on its way. With it some swell?? (hopefully). Enjoy Surf Photos of You.
Dee Why: Surfing today? Give it a miss.
Posted on May 24th, 2011 in Surf Reports.Beautiful sunrise this morning, but the surf is all but non-existent. Good day for catching up on work.
Construction has started along The Strand in Dee Why. You can expect chaos pretty much nonstop until about November and all the parking on the W side of the Strand has been removed.
