Basically flat

Posted on May 24th, 2011 in Manly.

Basically flat this morning but it didn’t stop a keen small crew to hang at Queenscliff and pick up some micro peelers.  Stunning sunrise made it all worth it.

Nina’s Wobbly Bits, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on May 24th, 2011 in Byron.

Ah yes folks, the La Nina weather pattern is still calling the shots and so Huey was wearing the wobbly boots in Byron Bay today. No matter where or when you looked it was lumpy, bumpy and kind of wobbly today. Add to that yet another grey day with a whole lot of rain, and you have a recipe for not much going on anywhere in the bay. A few hardy souls got out and about and made the effort to try and make the most of what was on offer. And for those who really looked hard enough there were actually a few reasonable, if not highly wobbly waves to be had. But seriously when all is said and done, most of us here are a little over the grey skies, the constant rain and the wobbly bits. In fact we reckon it’s about time the La Nina loosened its grip and we got back to a more stable kind of weather pattern, In Byron Bay Today.

Scratching around

Posted on May 23rd, 2011 in Curl Curl, Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

This morning saw a waist high NE windswell with an average period of about 7 seconds making its very slight presence felt at spots with the best orientation. I checked Curly and Dee Why and can report that there were maybe a dozen in the water all up. That short average period means the waves aren’t overly energetic, so if you’re keen to get wet, take your small wave gear.

The latest round of the wave model interpretations predicts that the little waves will get smaller today and tomorrow we could see flatness.

Those models continue to predict 3-4 metres of south swell on Wednesday and 2-3 metres on Thursday. The wind will be pretty strong from the south over the peak period of the swell, so I’m not expecting particularly memorable conditions. But it should be pretty big!

Have yourself a top old Monday.

TIDES: L @0700, H @1300

Weather Situation
A complex cold front will cross New South Wales coast today and a low pressure system will develop on the front over the central Tasman Sea during Tuesday increasing southerly winds along the coast. Winds are expected to gradually ease during Wednesday and Thursday as the low moves towards New Zealand a strong high pressure moves slowly towards the Bight extending a ridge to the Coral Sea.

Forecast for Monday until midnight
Winds: North to northwesterly 15 to 25 knots tending west to northwesterly during the afternoon. Seas: 1.5 to 2 metres. Swell: Northeasterly 1 metre.

Forecast for Tuesday
Winds: West to southwesterly 15 to 25 knots becoming southwesterly 20 to 30 knots later in the evening. Seas: 1 to 2 metres increasing to 2 to 3 metres later in the evening. Swell: Northeasterly about 1 metre.

Forecast for Wednesday
Winds: Southerly about 30 knots. Seas: 3 metres increasing up to 4 metres during the morning. Swell: Easterly about 1.5 metres.

Video: where giant Aussie south swells go to die…

Posted on May 23rd, 2011 in California.

When big south swells leave us behind they often track right across the Pacific to California. Our last big swell started making itself felt up there a few days ago. Here’s a video of a guy named Alan Sarlo (who was a big deal in the 70′s) shooting the pier at Malibu after picking up the wave way up the point. Apart from anything else, it’s amazing to see how uncrowded the inside of the line up was on the day…

Human Slalom, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on May 23rd, 2011 in Byron.

You know this place is weird at times, it can be lining up perfectly on a sunny Sunday midsummer, and you paddle into an empty lineup and ask yourself, where are all the crew, in Byron Bay today? Today however was not one of those days. It was raining, grey, crowded both in and out of the water, and that’s pretty much how it stayed all day. Truth is you just can’t pick this place; we’ve scored it empty and lining up perfectly right in the middle of the summer holidays more than once. Then again today it’s not any particular holiday or occasion, the weather was ordinary at best, the waves really were not that special and it was utterly chockers from sunrise to sunset in the bay. Maybe everyone just got the same idea at the same time, who knows. Those who did weave their way through the human slalom course in the water scored the occasional slide. They offered a few resigned smiles and basically accepted it for what it was, just another Sunday, In Byron Bay Today.

Small, but if you have something buoyant…

Posted on May 22nd, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Late start for yours truly this morning but for those who were up early, there were small waves to be had thanks to the minimal change in energy levels since yesterday. An 8 second period east windswell of about a metre is lapping gently ashore on the incoming tide. It’s set to cloud up later with a slight chance of percipitation on the cards, but the high should be a mild 23 and the wind will be out of the north.

From the shape of this morning’s run of the wave models, it appears that we’re in for another 48 hours or so of small conditions. Tuesday is looking as though it’ll be just about flat ahead of that substantial pulse that’s been showing on the models for some days now.

As usual the estimates of the swell size on Wednesday are bouncing around a bit, but I think we can count on it being very big and very windy from the SW. The wind and swell should last for a couple days or so too.

Have a great day one and all!

Weather Situation
A strong high pressure system near New Zealand is moving southeast maintaining a ridge to the New South Wales north coast. A complex frontal system will bring southwesterly change to the south coast on Monday. Southerly winds are expected to extend to the north coast during Tuesday and to increase as a low pressure system develops over the southern Tasman Sea and another strong high moves south of the Bight extending a ridge to the Coral Sea.

Forecast for Sunday until midnight
Winds: Northerly 10 to 15 knots tending 15 to 20 knots during the afternoon. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing to 1.5 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Northeasterly 1 metre.

Forecast for Monday
Winds: Northwesterly 15 to 25 knots tending west to northwesterly 10 to 20 knots around dawn. Seas: Up to 2 metres decreasing to below 1 metre around midday. Swell: Northeasterly 1 metre. The chance of thunderstorms during the morning.

Forecast for Tuesday
Winds: West to southwesterly 15 to 20 knots becoming southwesterly up to 30 knots during the evening. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres increasing to 2 metres during the evening. Swell: Northeasterly about 1 metre.
