Floatation Required
Posted on May 22nd, 2011 in Manly. The warm morning has brought out a lot of keen punters early. You’ll need some serious floatation and/or micro wave skills to milk the knee high sets. Thigh high if you are lucky (or short). A nice morning to float around anyway and with some rain forecast later you gotta try and scratch that surf itch with something I guess. Good luck

You know it’s just been one of those weeks, in Byron Bay. Many times, Huey hinted at some really good surf and several times it kind of fell short of the mark. They were either a little too much wind or not enough, or a strange twist in the swell or the tide was not quite right. Then when it did get good the crowds were pretty intense, an environmental factor that can ruin any session. But you know every cloud has a silver lining, a bright moment on the edge of the gloom. The fact that this was all going forced many of the crew to get out and about and look elsewhere in the bay. And by the time it was Saturday the stories were coming in. ‘Yeah we scored it Monday evening’, ‘cool we got that spot Tuesday arvo with only three guys’ etc and so forth. So it seems that despite the grey, the rain, the crowds and weird waves, there were many bright moments had in the bay. It just goes to show it’s best to follow your nose, and not the surf reports, In Byron Bay Today.
Tiny but not totally flat
Posted on May 21st, 2011 in Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
As expected, the energy levels continued their steady decline overnight and Saturday morning saw about a metre of 8 second period east windswell coming into the beaches of Sydney. At Dee Why those settings were translating into knee to waist high sets on the incoming tide. The wind wasn’t a significant factor, skies were clear and as a consequence there were a few bods getting amongst it.
You might possibly find slightly bigger bomb sets at places that really like the east swell direction, but I wouldn’t expect anything dramatically better than the sort of stuff we were seeing at Dee Why. Take your small wave board and a healthy reserve of patience and you should be right.
Outlook for the rest of the day and tomorrow is for no significant improvement to surf prospects in Sydney. You should be able to find something little to cruise on, but that’s about it. Looking ahead to the start of next week, the models are pointing toward a classic winter lull through to about Wednesday. If it plays out as they foretell, there could be a substantial south pulse. The predictions vary in the details, but the current consensus is for us to see south swell at around the 4 metre mark with a period somewhere in the 8-10 sec range. Sadly, the Bureau says we’re going to have 30-40 km/h south to SW wind with it. So, the surf options may be somewhat limited. As always, we shall see what we shall see!
Have yourself a top old Saturday!

Weather Situation
A strong high pressure system near New Zealand is moving southeast maintaining a ridge to the New South Wales north coast. A complex frontal system will move over the southwestern Tasman Sea on Monday night bringing south to southwest change along the coast. Southerly winds are expected to strengthen during Tuesday as a low pressure system develops over the southern Tasman Sea and another strong high moves south of the Bight extending a ridge to the Coral Sea.Forecast for Saturday until midnight
Winds: Northwesterly 5 to 15 knots tending north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon. Seas: Below 1 metre. Swell: Easterly 1 metre.Forecast for Sunday
Winds: Northerly 10 to 15 knots increasing to 15 to 20 knots during the afternoon. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing to 1.5 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Northeasterly 1 metre.Forecast for Monday

Ankle high
Posted on May 21st, 2011 in Long Reef.It is tiny this morning and if this was the last day on earth you would be disappointed that there is basically no surfable waves this morning. All I can say is that there are waves on the way. Another mid week swell is currently being generated and should arrive on Wednesday and last a couple of days. Not long period stuff like last Wednesday only about 9 sec wind swell. Long Reef played host to SUPs as it was only ankle high and well suited. Patience… Enjoy Surf Photos of You.
Micro Pockets
Posted on May 21st, 2011 in Manly.POST SURF UPDATE: For the morning crew there was some fairly consistent waist high sets but it’s probably the incoming tide helping. There’s waves around. Curly looked the biggest with quite a few waves coming in. Don’t leave it too long.
MORNING: Not much for Sat surfers but on the incoming tide in exactly the right spot there may be a thigh-to-waist high rideable pocket. Will be another cracker of a day so my guess is a lot of people will be heading to the beach for a float around anyway.
Just about faded away

Hello Friends,
Since this time yesterday, the swell has dropped from two metres to a metre, the primary direction has gone from SE to east and most significantly, the average period has weakened from around 11 seconds to close to 8 seconds. At Dee Why that means the point is unoccupied and kiddies is equally empty. The only waves I saw when I checked for the first time today were up the beach toward No Mans. I’d say anything above the waist high mark will be a bonus.
From the look of the models, we’re in for more or less the same as we have this morning right through the weekend and maybe to the middle of next week when it seems we might have some large but raw (ie shortish period) south swell and strong southerlies. I’ll be interested in the Goat’s take on this.
Have yourself a top old day!

Posted on May 20th, 2011 in Manly.LUNCH update: Swell has way more east in it that I thought after checking a few spots. Cracker day. Still a few clean small lazy fun ones with the tide getting friendlier about now. Hard not to get in the water if you have nothing to do.
Down to 2ft remains of the swell at Manly. Tiny at the south end. Still the usual perfect Autumn surf conditions but you would need to head to your usual south magnets to squeeze the most out of whats left. Forecast ain’t that great for the weekend either. Bit strange to see the end of such an awesome run of surf. Surely there’s something around the corner though.
