Beachbreak Fun (Pinetrees)
Posted on May 20th, 2011 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Reports, Surf Sessions. Disillusioned with the south shore of Kauai, as crowded as Santa Cruz and not half as pretty, I decided to try the north coast since small swells were running toward both the top and the bottom of the island. Hanalei Bay, aka Bali Hai, is one of the most beautiful curves of coastline in the world. The swell was small, but at Pinetrees it was forming into some fun-sized waves, and there were plenty of the aforementioned pine trees to shade Scott as he read a novel on the beach while I surfed.I'd stopped by Tamba Surf Company for a new leash on the way north, since the ankle strap on the one the 6'10" came with was dangerously frayed and close to breaking. The new leash was seriously kinked, wrapping around my leg, getting underfoot and snagging between my toes at inopportune times. Note to self: If I can't bring my own board, at least bring my own leash. Nevertheless, I had a blast on the 2-4' waves rolling through at Pinetrees.
Kauai Ocean Explorer: North shore surf increased Wed & is currently in the 3-5' range. East winds becoming stronger into this weekend, with associated choppy wind-swell at all East-exposed areas. Hanalei 1-3 ft. 5-10 kt. Surfline: SSE Southern Hemi swell set up waist-shoulder high surf and some better sets for the good south exposures. A new NW swell fill in with waist-shoulder high waves at top north exposed spots. Buoy 51201: (Wave) SWELL: 1.6 ft at 12.5 s NW 39 / WIND WAVE: 2.0 ft at 9.9 s NNW / WVHT: 2.6 ft / APD: 6.3 s / MWD: 319° (Met) WVHT: 2.6 ft / DPD: 13.0 s / WTMP: 78.6° F. Tide: 0' rising slightly.

Smoky start but smokin’ still
Posted on May 19th, 2011 in Big Picture, Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
Swell continues to decline from yesterday morning’s sizable offerings. As of 0730 the MHL buoy was showing it 2 metres of south swell at 11 seconds apart. That was enough to produce the odd overhead set at Dee Why, but it looks as though the lulls are getting longer with each passing hour. If the trend lines continue in the current direction, by lunch time the swell will be under the 2 metre mark and the power setting will be below the 10 sec mark. That doesn’t mean it’ll be flat or anything, so if your schedule means you’re stuck with the afternoon shift, don’t despair, there should still be something surfable at your favourite south magnet.
Winds are set to be light and out of the north to NW this morning, with a swing to the north later.
I got out and about with the camera yesterday and as I write this, images are uploading to new galleries from Dee Why point, Longy bombies and The Kick and Collaroy. It was damn big at Dee Why and scary big at the bombies. By the time I got around to Collaroy, the Kick was getting pretty inconsistent, but there were still a few head high sets getting in.
We may still have a few mal waves around tomorrow morning and across the weekend – possibly – but I’ll be interested to see what the Goat says beyond that because the models are saying we’re headed for micro-ness across the front end of next week.
Go well with your day!

PICS by Don: Queenscliff Thursday morning
Posted on May 19th, 2011 in Don's surfin' pics, Manly, Top stories.
On Thursday morning I decided to wander down to Manly for a look at the last of the big south swell. Wave faces on the bigger ones were still into the head high range, but you could see the swell was backing off pretty quickly. I shot for half an hour between 1000 and 1030 at Queenscliff. The skies were rather smoky but there wasn’t much wind, and the waits for sets weren’t too long. If you took off on a wave during the sesh, I probably got a shot of ya!

After shooting the big stuff at Dee Why and Long Reef, I went around the corner to see if anything was getting into Collaroy. Sure enough, there were waves. They weren’t very big, but every now and then something kind of interesting came through the Kick. So I shot folks having fun until I filled up the memory card. As usual, click the pic below to visit the gallery.

Dee Why: fading fast but a few sneaker sets now and again
Posted on May 19th, 2011 in Surf Reports. What a difference a day makes. After yesterday’s almost epic swell it’s back to a casual 2ft at 0900 hrs. Just got out of the water from relaxed surf at the Point with only a handful of other outs. Some fun ones but they were very far between.
For anyone who’s interested, I’ve posted a Picasa gallery of some shots from yesterday’s big swell here:

Here’s one of the rare sets out there at the moment:
Not as big
Posted on May 19th, 2011 in Long Reef. There is still a good 3 – 5 foot swell and every so ofter a bigger one catches a few out down at Long Reef tis morning. Apart from the fog and the smoke haze conditions a smooth and glassy. The Bomby is not as consistent and there is a peaky bank down the beach. Some good waves were had. Enjoy Surf Photos of You.

After shooting at Dee Why point for most of the morning, I wandered up to Long Reef to get a few pictures of people towing and paddling in to the bombies. Lighting conditions were perfect and I only stopped shooting when everybody got out of the water. To see the whole gallery, just click the picture below.

Wednesday morning saw nearly four metres of 14 sec south swell slam into Sydney. Not too many places were holding the size, so I spent most of the morning waiting for people to take off on waves at Dee Why point. Click the picture below to go to the gallery…
Smoke at Dawn
Posted on May 19th, 2011 in Manly.Swells dropped to about head high at Manly. Still some nice rides. Clean and westerly offshore means any beach will do. 9:40am high tide may shift the spot-to-be around but yet another perfect surf season day. Bit of bush fire smoke at dawn to add some character to the morning too. Reminds me of mornings in Indo. Enjoy
