Sunday and the surfin’ is looking good
Posted on June 19th, 2011 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
A mostly sunny morning with light westerlies and a couple metres of 10 second period south swell for International Surf Day. And that means fun right along Sydney’s beaches. Unless you have some pressing obligation, I’d be heading out looking for a wave if I could. From the look of the forecasts, we should have surf and favourable winds all day long, although it appears that the wave energy may drop a toward dark, so sooner could be better on that front.
I should have some fresh galleries from Friday and Saturday up this evening, and I’m going to try to add another today if I can.
Of course I’ll be lending a (gloved) hand to the beach clean up/picnic/music gathering at Long Reef from 2pm this afternoon.
Outlook for the next few days is a steady decline to midweek smallness. There might be some little ones around on Monday morning, but Tue-Wed is looking kinda marginal at this stage on the forecast models. Looks as though we could get another perk for south swell spots Thr-Fri. What a winter we’re having!
Have yourself a great Sunday.

Weather Situation
A deep low pressure system over the southern Tasman Sea is moving slowly to the south. A high over central Australia extends a ridge eastwards. These two systems are resulting in fresh to strong southwest winds over NSW coastal waters. Winds are expected to ease Sunday as the low moves near to New Zealand and a high pressure ridge strengthens across NSW. Winds are likely to increase from late Monday with a cold front moving across the state on Tuesday.

PICS by Don: Dee Why Saturday morning
Posted on June 19th, 2011 in Dee Why, Don's surfin' pics.
The swell kicked on into a second day and Sydney surfers were treated to more three metre south swell with sunny skies and generally offshore winds. I looked around but decided Dee Why had the best looking waves for shooting (and later, for surfing!).

Pics: Dee Why and Curly – 18/6/11
Posted on June 19th, 2011 in Top stories. What an awesome weekend wave and weather-wise. Despite the chill in the breeze the combination of sunny skies and mega-bounty of swell kept everyone warm and fuzzy by being able to catch so many waves.
The swell came into it’s own 2 hours before and after the high tide particularly at North Curly where they were holding the first Nathan Sawyer Memorial Surf Fest. I was there to capture all the action between 12-3pm. Click through to http://www.wozthatyou.com/portfolio192112.html to see all the shots.
I started off the day at Dee Why between 830-930 where the point was popping nicely with all manner of craft weighing in. You can see all the action here: http://www.wozthatyou.com/portfolio192154.html
Have a great week!
Cheers,
Doug
Lets share the waves.
Posted on June 19th, 2011 in Dee Why.There were plenty of waves to be had this morning especially at Dee Why where there were a few sitting on a nice bank out in front of the surf club. Sardines comes to mind or the SuperBank. But it was around 3 foot with 5 foot sets coming through. Its dropping with the tide and its also a bit fat. But still its the weekend so lets all share the waves. Have a great surf! Surf Photos of You

Friday morning dawned sunny and offshore with a pumping 3 metre south swell at Dee Why. Your humble correspondent set up the camera and spent a couple hours shooting under great conditions. Have a look if you were in the water, I probably got a shot or two at least. Have look even if you weren’t in the water, you might see a mate in amongst those great waves. As always, click the pic below to go to the gallery. To see buying options, click individual pictures and look top left for the link to the prices.
Roaming Season, In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Review.
Posted on June 19th, 2011 in Byron.
Well folks it’s roaming season once again in Byron Bay. It’s time to get out for a wee stroll on the lesser known stretches of beach and check out the winter sand in and around Byron Bay. Yeah sure there’s a few well known winter spots starting to fire, but the crowds are already waking up to it. Yet for those who do their surf checks the old school way, in other words actually walk away from the computer screen and go outside. You’ll find there’s some really good sand starting to build nicely at some of the far lesser visited places around the traps. Don’t bother trying to work it out from the shots, because we haven’t been shooting them, and if we do, we won’t be naming them. Just get up, get those legs working, and get some walking done with your favourite stick under your arm. You’ll be glad you got into the rhythm of roaming season, In Byron Bay Today.
It be pumping kiddies
Posted on June 18th, 2011 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Chilly start to Saturday morning, but the skies are mostly clear and the swell has perked up overnight so that it’s now consistently into the head high range on sets at Dee Why (and the bombs are maybe 30% bigger than that). Swell is still out of the south but overnight it came back up a bit to be averaging around two metres as Saturday got started in Sydney. Period is around the 9 to 10 second mark, so it’s more than juicy enough. Plus, the wind was WSW at around 15kts. There should be plenty of interesting options at south swell spots this morning.
We’re likely to see a steady, if slow, decline in wave energy through the day. But some of the swell prediction models are showing it again coming back up a touch overnight, so tomorrow could find us with a similar pattern, ie the size it was this morning, and fading back a little toward dark. The Bureau is saying it should be easterly about a metre at the moment (which it isn’t according to the MHL data) today, but tomorrow they say it’ll come around to the south (where the buoy is showing it right now). Wind should be offshore again tomorrow morning, so there will be more fun to be had.
I reckon all of us who plan to front Longy tomorrow afternoon to engage in a little constructive beach cleaning and picnicing will have cricks in our necks from twisting around to watch the waves. It starts at 2pm so get along with your picnic stuff and heavy gloves!
Have yourself a top old day, and look out for me ’cause I plan to do a bit of shooting.

Dee Why Pics 18 June 11, 8.15 – 9.25am & 12.30-1.30pm
Posted on June 18th, 2011 in Top stories.Surf Photos of You. I’ve been down Dee Why all day till around 1.30pm shooting a few surfers. I even managed to get a wave or two myself. But I had a couple of sessions behind the lens and Dee Why had some great waves in the centre out in front of the Surf Club. A good 4 – 5 foot and offshore with some nice rights and left going all day. Check out my Surf Gallery or home page for the pics. Surf Photos of You.
Yawn Patrol (Linda Mar)
Posted on June 18th, 2011 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions. Yesterday afternoon I had to drive down to westside Santa Cruz to pick up my 7'0" after Ward Coffey fixed a few dings. I was hoping to get in a surf after, but only the main peak and occasionally the adjacent one were working at Steamer Lane; everywhere else was flat, and the sea was whitecapping around the corner. The Lane was oh so crowded, mostly with really good shortboarders, and while I find them entertaining to watch, I didn't want to do so from the water while relegated to the shoulder with nary an unclaimed wave for me to surf. Nor did I want to fight rush hour traffic across town to the eastside, where similar crowds likely awaited.![]() |

A south wind was kicking up, and it blew me north to Linda Mar with further lowered expectations. It looked meh from the parking lot, but I was getting wet regardless. Once in the water, I was pleasantly surprised. That's the good thing about low expectations: hard to disappoint, easy to please.
I walked to Boat Docks at the far south end of the beach, past many closeouts that were bigger than I'd realized from the lot. I watched a longboarder try to paddle out through them; he got tumbled back to the beach and started walking south too. I found a little rip near the creek and made it to the outside with little difficulty. It was also surprisingly uncrowded for Linda Mar, with only two guys on my peak to start. Perhaps the early hour had something to do with that.
| Low tide at Linda Mar |
Linda Mar is frequented by beginners, so it's not unusual to see surfers sitting too far outside. They haven't learned where to line up to catch the waves, or they drift around without noticing. But the guys on my peak seemed to know what they were doing, and I as paddled back out after a ride, I was a bit puzzled to see they'd moved well outside of my lined-up point, triangulated on a red beach house and a hill house with red trim. They'd seen on the horizon what I couldn't from my prone position: incoming bombs. Both surfers caught the first wave, which was slightly over their heads, riding in opposite directions. I turtled-rolled the roiling whitewater of that wave and of the second big one that followed, before the surf returned to fun-sized once again.
Sunshine, blue water, and fun waves. Sweet sweet stoke! All this before 7 o'clock in the morning.
Surfline: 3-4 ft, occ. 5 ft. Fair conditions. Clean, sectiony, walled up lines with a few short, pick and choose corners. More tide helps. Mainly short period NW windswell is in the water today with chest-head high surf at exposures while some modest size. South groundswell provides 3-4'+ sets at the better southerly exposed spots. Buoy 46012: (Wave) SWELL: 9.5 ft at 10.0 s NW 47 / WIND WAVE: 4.9 ft at 6.7 s NW / WVHT: 10.8 ft / APD: 7.4 s / MWD: 320° (Met) WSPD: 17 kts / GST: 23 kts / WVHT: 9.8 ft / DPD: 9.0 s / WDIR: 320° / ATMP: 51.8° F / WTMP: 54.0° F. Pumping start to Friday
Posted on June 17th, 2011 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
What a difference a day makes!
Swell is SE at around 3 metres on average with a kicking 11-12 sec period. At Dee Why that is producing 2x overhead sets and even a few bigger ones on the bombs. Wind was out of the west only lightly as the day got started under brilliant blue skies. Looks like a classic winter day coming up. Wind is expected to swing SW soon and to get into the 20-30 kt range, so there are a few spots that will go off the available list soon. Plus we have a high tide at about 0920.
Get out and enjoy it if you can (unless you’re a beginner or otherwise not feeling super confident in big conditions) and wave hi if you see me out shooting.
I’ll try to update again later.
