Friday wrap

Posted on June 17th, 2011 in At large, Dee Why, Manly.

Swell was pretty juicy this morning, but it began fading noticeably from late morning. As of sunset the average period was just 8 seconds (well down on the 11 sec we had at daybreak) and the average size dropped from 3 metres to a little under 2m. The direction’s changed too. It’s gone from SE to south, so that contributed no doubt to the rapid decline in size this afternoon.

The Bureau says that tomorrow’s weather will be similar to today’s – ie mainly sunny with w-sw winds of 20-30 kts. The wave prediction models are projecting a continuing gradual decrease in swell energy and from the way things are shaping up, it looks as though we can probably expect waist to chest high at south spots (the Bureau reckons it’ll be east, but the MHL buoy is showing the swell already south, so I’m going with that!).

I did a bit of shooting at Dee Why this morning, so I’ll have a fresh gallery up at some point tomorrow.

Have a great Friday evening and see you tomorrow.

Solid n Pumping

Posted on June 17th, 2011 in Manly.

Its a solid 6ft+ and pumping conditions.  East swell and nice lines.  Lots of places lighting up this morning.  I’d normally feel bad about missing this but the Indian Ocean is lighting up like a Xmas tree on the forecast maps and I’m running to the airport to fly to the Maldives.  Reports offline for 2 weeks  Hope you score

A Matter Of Timing, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on June 17th, 2011 in Byron.

Well ok so the sunshine and warm weather didn’t hang about for too long, and so we were quickly dropped back into winter, in Byron Bay today. Of course seeing as it is actually winter, one can’t really complain. There was however some very sweet little waves on offer during most of the day. Of course not all of it was happening at all times. It was a matter of matching the right wind conditions with the appropriate location on the correct tide. If you got right, well you already know what happened if you got it right. If you got it wrong, then like the others that also mistimed it, it was lumpy bumpy windy with little reward for the effort. At this time of year with these kinds of conditions, it’s very much a matter of timing, In Byron Bay Today.

Thursday afternoon wrap

Posted on June 16th, 2011 in At large.

Hello Friends,

A little evening update for ya. Well, as predicted the wind shifted around to the SW and backed off to 10-15 kts as we got toward dusk. The swell got a little more east to it and according to the MHL data, the average period jumped dramatically to 12 seconds. It was around the 2.5m mark on average, so there was enough energy for it to wrap around into the more favouarbly oriented south Narrabeen to Whiterock zone.

A small crew were chasing the usual short rides at Whiterock. Looked to maybe be into the shoulder high range on the sets. At Collaroy it was roughly the same size, but slower and pretty busy. Up the beach there were a few bods chasing clean, mostly shutting down sections south of the Marquesas. North from there the swell is bigger, but the wind is sideshore and the shutdowns and rips rule.

By tomorrow morning the models are saying the swell will still be from the east, but smaller. Wind is expected to be 15 to 20 kts from the SW. Tide will be high ar around 0920 and skies will be clearing as we head into a sunny Friday. Could be fun at east spots.

Go well!

Hello Friends,

Swell has dropped noticeably since yesterday morning. Not that it matters too much because the wind is set to be S-SE through this morning before moving around to a possibly more favourable S-SW this afternoon. Conditions as the day got started were strictly ordinary. No one in the woofy looking waters of Dee Why, more rain showers blowing through and of course the relentless wind.

Tomorrow the wind should be around to the SW and the swell should still be near the two metre mark at east spots, so I’m cautiously hopeful. Throw in a prediction of sunny weather and it could be quite a different look from this morning’s gloomy mess.

This morning’s run of the models show some energy sticking around through the weekend, but it might as the Goat says, be down a bit on Saturday and up a bit on Sunday… that’d be good for the Long Reef International Surf Day beach clean up being hosted by the Save Long Reef crew.

Hmm Nice, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on June 16th, 2011 in Byron.

I almost feel guilty when I know crew down the coast are still stuck in hideous weather, but egad how nice was that, in Byron Bay today. The sun was out, the swell was sizeable. The wind was light and variable all day. In other words everywhere was just a little wind affected, while nowhere was blown out in the bay. The crowds were well spread out. People were strolling around in the winter warmth looking for decent banks. Many eventually found what they fancied and quietly got into a few. The general consensus from most of the crew was ‘yeah that was nice, real nice’, In Byron Bay Today.

Bigger and messier

Posted on June 15th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

According to this morning’s data from the Sydney MHL buoy, the swell is averaging around 4 metres out of the SSE at about 9 seconds apart. The wind at 0800 was 20-30kts from the SE. Not surprisingly the ocean is a heaving mess. The low pressure system generating all this energy is expected to move away from the coast as it comes south. That means we’re going to have this weather (and swell) for the rest of the day and into tomorrow.

The BoM is calling for the wind to move around to the SW tomorrow afternoon and for it to stay that way through the weekend. It looks as though the swell will fade steadily though and by midday Saturday it could be getting pretty small. And right now the forecast models are saying we’re in for a week of flatness from about Monday. Here’s hoping we all get a few waves before Huey turns off the tap!

Go well with your Wednesday.

Weather Situation
A complex low pressure system over the NSW north coast and northern Tasman Sea in conjunction with a strengthening high pressure ridge over the southern Tasman is producing strong to gale force southeasterly winds along the NSW northern and central coasts. Small scale low centres embedded in the complex are likely to move westward and affect the Hunter and Mid North Coast over the next 48 hours.
Forecast for Wednesday until midnight

Messing Up, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on June 15th, 2011 in Byron.

It seems old Huey is in naughty kind of mood at the moment and is messing up with reckless abandon, in Byron Bay today. Although got to say, we have been pretty lucky compared to our poor neighbours down the Coffs Coast. The crew down there got absolutely hammered today by the complex east coast low that’s slowly working its way south at the moment. Up here, it’s not so wet, well not today anyway, but the swell was large and lumpy from the southeast the wind was strong from the northwest, and it was all just a bit of a mess. The couple of spots that would normally swing offshore in such a situation were totally maxed out, and it was simply a matter of paddling into a few messy ones or just leaving it out, In Byron Bay Today.
