Cold Comfort, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on June 10th, 2011 in Byron.
Standing down the beach this morning I couldn’t help but wonder if bits of my body had fallen off, as I simply couldn’t feel if they were still there. Yes folks those spoilt rotten dwellers of the northern climes, in other words us. Actually got a little taste of what real winter weather feels like, in Byron Bay today. Of course we’ll get no sympathy from the crew down south, as they pretty much experience this stuff nonstop for months on end. We however are not used to it, and are therefore ill equipped to handle it. Of course that would explain why the crew were walking around all day giving themselves strange comforting little embraces and muttering obscenities about how bloody cold it was in the bay. If there is any cold comfort in all this chilliness then it must be this. The surf was rather uncrowded and damn good too, In Byron Bay Today.

Hello Friends,
It appeared to be just about flat when I checked Dee Why at 0730. Swell’s out of the south at about a metre at sea, but average period is around the 8 second mark. Plus, the wind was out of the WNW at 15-20 kts. Nice looking day otherwise…
There’s nothing much showing on the buoys off to the south of Sydney and the Bureau’s modelling is showing it staying small through the day. It might come up a touch, but the main pulse is due to arrive around lunch time tomorrow, when the call is for 3-4 metres of south swell by dusk. That should last overnight and through Saturday. Unfortunately the wind forecast hasn’t improved. The swell is set to arrive with 30-35kts of S-SW wind. On Saturday it’s set to be southerly (but decreasing a bit during the day).
Have yourself a top old Friday!
Weather Situation
A low east of Tasmania is expected to move slowly to the east/northeast maintaining the strong to gale force southwest airstream over the southern and central parts of the coast throughout Friday before winds turn more southerly and ease on Saturday. Onshore airstream is likely to develop during Sunday as a ridge builds to the south.

Just about the chat
Posted on June 9th, 2011 in Manly.Manly is flatter than yesterday if you could call it that. Tiny south swell so maybe something tiny at Curly? Couple of fellas out at Queensy reminding me what a crazy bunch we surfers are. Getting up at dawn to wait patiently in freezing winds for a micro ride. Sometimes it just about the sunrise and chat.
The Countdown, In Byron Bay Today.

So here we sit freezing our rear ends off and counting down the days till the Grown Flow Fish draw, in Byron Bay today. This is it folks, the board is hanging in The Top Shop right now for you to go and look at. It will be won by one of you guys this coming Sunday the 12th of June at 3pm. Remember you got to be there to claim it, or Andrew will redraw it until somebody who is present takes it home. Meanwhile most folks were staying indoors and keeping out of the bitterly cold westerly that whipped through the bay. The waves were kind of fun and a few hardy souls that don’t seem to mind the cold, got out for a few cold slides under dark grey skies, In Byron Bay Today.
Pretty small and cold, but pretty anyway

Hello Friends,
According to the MHL buoy data from 0600 our SE swell was averaging a barely detectable 0.5 metre at just 6 seconds. Fortunately there is some 11 second energy in amongst it. So, every now and then, a tiny but catchable little knee to waist high thing rolls into the Dee Why end of the Longy to Dee Why stretch. And yes, it’s very cold (by Sydney standards) this morning. It was less than 10 up on Collaroy Plateau when I climbed up into the crows nest to get a couple pics at around 0715.
Wind is set to range between 20 and 25kts this morning, but by evening it could be in the 25 to 30 kt range. As of 0600 the MHL buoys off to the south of Sydney were not showing any obvious sign of the expected increase in swell energy later today. Wind reports from the Eden coast were still showing westerlies as of 0700. When they go more southerly, we can expect to see the swell ramping at the MHL buoys.
The wave forecast models are showing a little pulse for tomorrow morning into the two metre range. It still looks as though the big pulse will get started on Friday – along with strong W – SW wind. Depending on the interpretation, estimates are that the swell will be dead south at 10-12sec from the south when it peaks at anywhere between 4 and 5 metres overnight Friday. That could mean wave faces of similar size on sets at exposed spots. Unfortunately, it looks as though the wind will be strong and S to SE on Saturday morning.
Bit of a mixed bag, however I don’t think there’s any chance that this pulse will be anything like as good as last weekend’s.
Speaking of which, I got shots of upwards of a 100 surfers across the aforesaid weekend. If you surfed at any of the spots I covered (or know someone who did), you should look through to see if I got any of your waves. I always try to get ordinary surfers at their most extraordinary, so don’t assume that I’d never take a picture of you! There’s not much I like better than hearing from someone that I got the best picture of them they’ve ever seen. I use a pretty good rig as well (Nikon D7000) so the shots are high enough resolution to be blown up to A2 size (at least!).
Have yourself a good one!
Weather Situation
A cold front, with associated strengthening westerly winds, will affect the New South Wales coast today, reaching gale force in the far south as a low develops over the southern Tasman Sea. As this low moves further east into the Tasman on Thursday and Friday, winds will turn more southerly and become strong to gale force along southern and central parts of the coast.
Forecast for Wednesday until midnight

- Westerly 25 to 30 knots decreasing to 20 to 25 knots during the morning then increasing to 25 to 30 knots by early evening.

- Swell
- Southeasterly about 1.5 metres tending southerly during the evening.

- Seas

- Swell

Southerly 2 to 3 metres.
Dee Why: Smaller and smaller
Posted on June 8th, 2011 in Surf Reports.Well, there were a few very small waves out earlier this morning, but now that the offshores have picked up substantially, it’s dropped to almost nothing at the Point, but there are a few little clean waves between Dee Why Centre and Poles at 1130. Cold, chilly wind blowing though. Looks like 25 knots of Westerly blowing out to sea.
Wait, float, take something that floats
Posted on June 8th, 2011 in Manly.Very lake-like conditions interrupted by tiny knee high sth swell sets. The morning regulars packed into a tight bunch to snag what they can. You need to wait, float and take something that floats today
It’s Baaaaack, In Byron Bay Today.

Hmm could it be the same big guy we saw yesterday, cruising through the lineup again, in Byron Bay today? Who knows, nobody can say for sure, but I surfed right over top of a pitch black bully twice in the bay today. Like I said it’s that time of year. The waves were kind of joyous yet there was a painful and easily avoidable injury suffered by someone who was hit by another who appears to believe they are more experienced than their ability belies. It’s an unfortunate bi-product of the modern surfing world that the inexperienced often feel they belong within a crowd. When I and many of my peers were learning many moons ago, the crew simply did not allow us within the crowd. We were kept at a distance until we could demonstrate we had control of our boards, which was the way it was done for decades. Nowadays people grab a board, canoe, whatever, and paddle straight into a crowd with reckless abandon. You don’t learn to drive in peak hour traffic, in other words, crowded waves wether large or small, are really best left to the more experienced surfers, In Byron Bay Today.
