Stormy morning across Sydney

Posted on July 20th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

20-40 kts of southerly lashing the rain across coastal Sydney this morning when I poked my head out from under the doona. The MHL buoy was reporting an average height of the south swell at sea of around 5 metres. The average period is around the 10 second mark. From the look of the other buoy data, the Sydney region is currently coping the brunt of the energy. But it looks to be pretty big all the way down to Batemans Bay.

The swell forecast models are still calling for the waves to be very big through Saturday. They’re predicting around 4-5 metres for today, then maybe dropping back to 3-4 m tomorrow, before thumping in again at 5m+ for Friday. Saturday could be smaller by a metre or two, but it should continue solid into Monday.

The problem will be that wind. It’s set to go hard from the southerly quarters right through to Monday – ie across pretty much the entire swell event. So only the most protected spots will have any prospect of relatively clean surface conditions. Combined with the showery weather, it doesn’t look like being too terrific at most places in the Sydney region.

Weather is just too socked in for a picture from me this morning. I’ll keep an eye out for a break in the rain, but the radar’s not looking too promising.

Have yourself a great day!

Here We Go Again, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on July 20th, 2011 in Byron.

Granted it was a tad small, but there were a few fun slides to be had, in Byron Bay today. But while things appear to be a bit of a non event here, further south, Huey is busily brewing up yet another east coast low. What this means for us remains to be seen. Probably howling south westerlies, with large straight southerly swell lines driving straight on up the coast. Or maybe not, we didn’t see much of the last swell from one these events. So we’ll just have to wait and see if we get it this time around. Either way an east coast low does mean strong winds are on the way. So hang on to ya beardy bits and prepare for the blow from the low, because here we go again, In Byron Bay Today.

Very, very tiny

Hello Friends,

Nothing much happening at Dee Why this morning. And that’s not surprising given that the primary swell direction is pushing away from the coast. However, the swell is expected to start increasing from later on today. The big question is whether or not the direction will switch around in time to deliver anything for this afternoon.

Outlook for the next few days remains for a very substantial swell event – with heaps of southerly wind and grey and showery weather. The models are showing 4-5 metres from the SE on Thursday, and maybe even bigger on Friday (which looks like being the peak day). Unlike our last big swell event, the SE direction of this one should see more energy(!) slamming into the coast.

Gotta run now, but will try to come back later with an update on the outlook for you.

Have yourself a top old Tuesday one and all.

Things that make ya go Hmmmmmmm…

Not here yet but its coming.

The swell is still very small at lunch time down at Manly.  1 foot on the sets.  From Queenscliff to Manly only about 8 surfers out.  The models are predicting huge swell for the next few days or so, peaking Friday.  It may be too big for the Northern Beaches to handle so tomorrow could be a day to go surfing as you maybe only watching from then on.  Enjoy.  Surf Photos of You.

Small and pretty weak, but a handful of bods are finding rideable bumps at Wanda and various other peaks along the big stretch. The bigger craft seemed to have an advantage

Dee Why: Situation dire–all quiet on the Eastern Front. (But that will change by tomorrow)

Here’s the Wave of the Day on Dee Why Point. No one in the water from Dee Why to Long Reef at 0745. Flatski.

Things have begun to finally shape up with the renovations along The Strand. Starting to look like civilisation again.

Consensus, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on July 19th, 2011 in Byron.

The general consensus from all we met was what an extraordinarily beautiful winter’s day it was, in Byron Bay today. You know, I got to admit even I was kind of dumb struck by just how gorgeous it turned out to be. Clean swell, light winds and balmy weather. Huey shone down brilliantly cracking out a carpet of diamonds across the relatively empty waves. Yup folks the general consensus from the crew we bumped into was that it was all just too darn pretty, In Byron Bay Today.
