And the swell continues

Posted on July 13th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Sorry to run late, sleep to coughing ratio not good for your correspondent. Anyhoo, we still have waves for those of you who are hale and hearty. According to the latest data from the MHL buoy off Sydney, we’re looking at 3 metres of south swell at around 13 seconds. That’s juicy!

Sets at Dee Why point look to be into the 1.5x overhead range (on faces). Given that I only watched for a short time, I’m betting there are a few bigger ones in the mix as well.

Today should see the swell intensity slacken off but Huey is set to wind it up one more time tomorrow. Thereafter it looks as though the energy will gradually fade through the weekend and that next week will be mostly tiny to flat.

Tide was high at 0640 and will be low at @ 1215 before running up to a big high at 1850.

Take it easy, have some fun and do some good on the way through!

PICS by Don: DY point Tu midday

Another sunny day with heaps of south swell energy pushing into Dee Why, so I took a break from responsibilities and wandered down to take pictures for an hour or so. Sets wave faces were shoulder to well overhead too.

As always you can view all the snaps by clicking the pics on this page to jump to the complete gallery.

Day 6 of swell. What a great run!

Posted on July 13th, 2011 in Dee Why.

I managed to get down to Dee Why early.  And I wasn’t alone.  Dee Why is one place that has handled the swell conditions better than most.  This morning it looked like it had dropped, but then a few good sized sets would come through.  Those would have been overhead at least.  Its a grey morning and there is a chill but the waves are still on.  I grabbed a few pics.  The German Bank produced a few spectacular shots.  Enjoy.  Surf Photos of You

Bigger and Better Elsewhere

Posted on July 13th, 2011 in Manly.

Still here but a touch smaller again. 4ft sets. Early big high tide was not helping the many people who had made the effort to get up.  As the tide moves out there should be a window of opportunity but you have had enough days of this to realise Manly is just not liking this swell much.  “Bigger & better elsewhere” is the name of this swell event for us.

Highs And Lows, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on July 13th, 2011 in Byron.

It started off glorious, sunny a gentle breeze caressing a nice clean south swell as it refracted off the cape, in Byron Bay today. Then Huey had one of those famous personality changes and suddenly it was over for the day in the bay. It was as quick as it comes too. First just a hint of a ruffle on the surface of the water, then bang a northerly air stream blasted the bay to pieces in a matter of minutes. It’s just one of those things when high and low pressure systems fight for superiority over the bay. Today the high won, the wind turned north and rapidly intensified, but that’s how it goes with highs and lows, In Byron Bay Today.

Down from yesterday but still big

Posted on July 12th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Definitely smaller than last night, but 3 metres of 11 second south swell is still reasonably hefty. At Dee Why it meant that there was only a small group in at the point and nobody that I could see up the beach. Wave faces on sets are into the 1.5x overhead range and the swell seemed to be pretty consistent. Surface was a bit messy looking and that may have something to do with the WNW wind direction pushing more chop into the south corners.

Swell is set to fade gradually through the day, but the wave forecast models show it still being into the two metre, 12 second range.

With luck we’ll have another 48-72 hours of offshore south swell in some form or other. But the general trend is toward flatness by early next week. So enjoy while you may and go well with your Tuesday.

Dee Why: still some punch to it, but backing off from yesterday

Posted on July 12th, 2011 in Surf Reports.

Still plenty of energy out there. Not as clean or as big as yesterday but still plenty of potential.

Here’re a few shots from yesterday morning:

Here’s one from around 9am yesterday:

Still with us.

Posted on July 12th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Today is the 5th straight day of decent size swell on the Northern Beaches.  I have been concentrating on Dee Why Beach for my pics.  I have noticed a considerable change in the banks there.  That magic bank just off the point is slowly disappearing with this large swell and sand movement.  Hopefully another will form once it settles down abit.  The Point is a little bumpy with the wash off the rocks.  So take the first wave of the set for the smoothest walls.  Don’t miss it or you might get the next one on your head.  Still around 5 – 6 foot.  Have a great day and be careful.  Surf Photos of You

Still rolling in

Posted on July 12th, 2011 in Manly.

Sth swell still rolling in.  Picked up yesterday then back down to a similar 4ft today.  Just beautiful, classic ground swell conditions but Manly sand is not making the most of it.  Fairly long waits between sets leaving a few unridden bombs as everyone scratches to find the end of dumping a section to take off on.

You’ve had enough of the same conditions to know where to find your spot.  Jeez you know somewhere on the coast has been pumping for days (Fiji?). Anyway get out there if you can.

On Cue, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on July 12th, 2011 in Byron.

So there we have it, the Qld holidays are over for winter and the local Groms and NSW crew have one more week to make the most of it, in Byron Bay today. Huey came to the party and turned on some clean little logger lines and happening grom sections this afternoon. From those who were around to sample it, there was much rejoicing. Granted seeing as it’s still holidays, the crowd got pretty hectic at times. But hey, who could blame them for frothing just a tad too much. It’s the last week of their holidays and everyone’s been waiting for it to fire up, and obligingly it fired up right on cue, In Byron Bay Today.
