Bumping along, maybe up a touch…

Posted on August 31st, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Not much happening on Wednesday morning down at Dee Why. Weather’s nice enough, but I couldn’t see anyone in the water. Tide is high at around 0930, so that’s not contributing in a positive manner. Swell is still coming from the SSE. It’s about a metre out at sea and the average period is up a notch to nearly 10 seconds. So you’d think there should be a little something at south facing spots once that tide recedes.

The wind’s light but due to pick up a bit and wander through the easterly quarters from SE to NE as the day goes along. So maybe north corners later could be a possibility for some low key fun.

Outlook for the next week is pretty much more of the same. But Tugarah is winding up and Yunggoray is on the way and with it gradually warming days and messy, weak surf prospects.

So keep on smilin’ and go well with your day!

Big Fish, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on August 31st, 2011 in Byron, Local Colour.

As we pulled up in the car park this morn, folks were hurriedly leaving the water and buzzing on about, ‘did ya see the sharks’, in Byron Bay today. Apparently four big beasties were spotted cruising around the point, can’t say I saw them myself. But The Magic Rabbit was out there having a few slides when we turned up. He strolled over and casually conveyed to us that he had indeed just surfed over top of one of them. His word is good enough for me, so if he saw them, then they were there alright. Certainly backed the crowd off for a spell, which was just as well. It’s hardly surprising really, after all, there are plenty of whales about with their calves at the moment, and big prey attracts big predators, In Byron Bay Today.

Mush world

Hello Friends,

Not the most exciting settings this morning Huey. I see you’ve bumped up the south swell to around 1.5 metres, but that 7 second period, what’re we supposed to do with that? And the dribbly SE wind, well, the less said about that the better. I know there were a few people in the water up the beach from the Dee Why SLSC at around 0700, but really, admirable as their stoke might be, you have to admit it was a case of pure surf optimism triumphing over reality.

We’re not whinging here, we just need to understand why you’re so keen on the Kiwis at the moment. Looking at the forecasts for the next week it seems as though they’re going to get all the love while we east coasters are left to sit it out for as far ahead as we can see. I can tell you, I’m really hoping that one model calling for waist to chest high SSE on Friday turns out to be right…

Looks like a good Tuesday for getting caught up, so go well one and all!

Weather Situation
A high pressure system south of the Bight is extending a ridge towards the southern New South Wales coast, while, a low pressure trough is situated over the northern coast. During Wednesday the dominant feature will be the strengthening high to the south, which will drift slowly east during the following few days, reaching the western Tasman Sea by Friday. The high will maintain a ridge along the coast throughout this time. There are early indications that the next frontal system may affect the region later on the weekend.
Forecast for Tuesday until midnight
Winds
South to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots tending east to southeasterly in the evening.
Seas
Below 1 metre.
Swell
Southerly 1 to 1.5 metres.
Weather
Isolated thunderstorms offshore at first.
Wednesday 31 August
Winds
South to southwesterly 5 to 10 knots becoming light around midday then tending east to northeasterly up to 10 knots by early evening. Inshore afternoon sea breezes.
Seas

Swell
Easterly about 1 metre.
Thursday 1 September
Winds
East to southeasterly 5 to 10 knots tending south to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the morning.

Doesn’t look like Slater’s going away anytime soon. Here’s the  bumpf about his latest triumph at Teahupo’o… now on to… NYC

Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) International
Billabong Pro Tahiti presented by Air Tahiti Nui
ASP World Title Event No. 5 of 11
Teahupoo, Taiarapu, French Polynesia

August 20 – 31, 2011
www.billabongpro.comTEAHUPO’O, Taiarapu/French Polynesia (Monday, August 29, 2011) – Ten-time and reigning World Surfing Champion, Kelly Slater (USA) is back in familiar territory, sitting at number one in the world after today claiming event 5 on the Association of Surfing Professionals 2011 Men’s World Tour, the Billabong Pro presented by Air Tahiti Nui.

The 39 year-old American surfing legend defeated Aussie tour young gun Owen Wright (Lennox Head, NSW, AUS) in the final held in two-metre plus waves at the infamous Teahupo’o break, making it two wins from four starts this season and it extends his record-breaking number of total career victories to 47.

Wright beat Slater the first three times they met, a statistic any surfers would claim proudly, but in his first ever Men’s World Tour final it all seemed to go the American’s way, with Slater controlling the heat and notching up excellent scores with his incredible display of precision tube riding.

Slater’s final two-wave combined total of 18.43 out of a possible 20 points saw him finish clear of Wright on 17.10 points, securing the 39 year-old the $75,000 US first place prize, 10,000 valuable world title ratings points and above all – a reminder to all that the best surfer ever is still well and truly, the best.

Slater’s win is the pinnacle of an incredible 10 days of action and drama in the South Pacific. On Saturday (Aug 27) the French Government issued a “Code Red” advisory warning that prohibited water craft from legally operating, a safeguard against historically large 6-to-10 metre swell that slammed Tahiti for almost 24 hours.

The warning meant the Billabong Pro was unable to run however an elite number of big-wave tow-in specialists tackled the giant waves. Throughout the course of the event, medical staff performed almost 20 treatments on injured competitors and an estimated 50+ additional treatments were given to non-competitors.

Finishing equal third today were South African Travis Logie (ZAF) and Australian Josh Kerr (AUS). Both surfers put in career-best performances to reach the semi-finals, with Kerr going down to Slater and Logie losing out to Wright.

Logie’s Teahupo’o campaign bordered on a fairy-tale finish; the 32 year-old was a late entrant to the event, rode and broke borrowed equipment, suffered multiple injuries, had to defeat close friend and world number two, Jordy Smith (ZAF) twice after a controversial heat restart and then make the final in order to guarantee his requalification before the next event in New York.

Jeremy Flores (FRA), 23, put in some of the most inspiring performances of the event, bagging the biggest waves and even surfing a Perfect 20 heat in yesterday’s idyllic conditions. For his heroics, Flores was awarded the Andy Irons Award for most committed performance of the event. This is the inaugural year for the award, honouring the late ASP and 2010 Billabong Pro Tahiti Champion, Andy Irons (HAW).

SE Chop

Not much going on today.  Swell a little bigger than yesterday at around 2 foot and maybe bigger on the sets.  Realistically just a sloppy wind swell.  Surf Photos of You.

Pretty Lame

Posted on August 30th, 2011 in Manly.

Pretty lame stuff with some dribblers down at North Steyne and some groms in the shorey at Queenscliff.  Light SSE that should get worse.

If you are reading this around 7:30 am get on the Billabong Pro now and watch the final between Slater and Owen Wright soon.

Popping, Slapping And Burning, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on August 30th, 2011 in Byron, Local Colour.

There was not a whole lot going down on the wave side of things, in Byron Bay today. But there was sure plenty of alternative action happening in the bay. The swell was small; the wind was a taste of the season to come, in other words northerly and strong. While the tide was a ridiculously low, low, thanks to a new moon. Yet if you hung around long enough you’d soon notice there were other things going on. The dolphins were in fine form popping out all over the place. Not to be outdone, the whales were busy with breaches and tail and pectoral fin slaps for most of the day. Then to top it all off we watched a meteorite of some sort burn up in the atmosphere above us at sunset, In Byron Bay Today.

Nothin’ much folks

Posted on August 29th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Only tiny, infrequent lines appearing at Dee Why this morning. One person was in the water up the beach from the SLSC at about 0700, but I didn’t see them come close to catching anything. I’d say you’d be doing pretty well if you found anything to propel you toward the sand this morning.

According to the MHL buoy data, the swell at sea is around the metre mark. It’s coming from the south at a reasonably healthy 10 seconds apart but there’s just not much of anything showing.

Outlook for the coming week continues to be for small to flat. Winds are expected to go around to the SE tomorrow and to stay out of the southerly quarters through to the weekend. The hopeful signs in the long range forecast of a day or two ago have become less so in this morning’s forecast round up. Oh well.

Have yourself a great Monday!
