Small but not utterly flat
Posted on August 15th, 2011 in Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
Heavy cloud lurking off to the south when I grabbed a snap of Dee Why beach this morning a little before 0730. The MHL buoy off Sydney is still not reporting in, so my guess is that the swell is out of the SE at around a metre with an average period somewhere in the 7-8 second range. The Eden and Batemans Bay buoys are showing an uptick in the average period to around 10 seconds. If that gets up to us, there could be a small improvement in size as the day goes along. Unfortunately the wind’s supposed to swing from SW this morning to SE this afternoon.
Tide is high at 0910 and low @1455.
From the shape of this morning’s swell forecast interpretations, it would appear that we’re in for a smallness through tomorrow before we get a bit of a SE pulse on Wednesday. That could be an interesting one because the wind is set to be pretty strongly out of the NE along the Sydney coast. According to the predictions, we’re looking at 12-14 sec periods too, and that should mean there are some interesting goings-on in a few of the north corners. Later in the week looks as though it’ll be smaller but not flat thanks to a combo of SE swell direction and reasonable periods.
For what it’s worth, the very long range call is for some real size at SE spots on Sunday through to Tuesday. Could be so-so winds with it, so although 4 metres of SE might happen, conditions may not be all that clean.
Have yourself a top old Monday!
Weather Situation
A strengthening high pressure system to the southeast of Tasmania extends a ridge into eastern New South Wales. The high is expected to move slowly over the southern Tasman Sea during the next day or two. An active cold front is forecast to cross much of the state during Wednesday, reaching the coast early Thursday. A low is then likely to form over the western Tasman Sea as an upper level trough moves across the region, although it’s precise position is currently uncertain.

Posted on August 15th, 2011 in Manly. The SE swell continues to hang in there. 1-2ft at the north end with only the longboard crew having a chance at getting much. Freezing offshore wind High tide at 9am could really swallow things up.
A Little Bit of This, In Byron Bay Today,
Posted on August 15th, 2011 in Byron.
And a little bit of that. A log, a grom, a girl, a matt, just another sunny kind of small wave day in Byron Bay today. Nothing to get all worked up about, yet certainly worth a paddle amongst the many for the chance of a few slides. The Groms were out in force, which is only natural. The logs came out to play as well, due to a lack of swell, and there were plenty of Sunday smiles being worn today. Being a joyously warm winters Sunday one could expect nothing less. So it was a little bit of this, a little bit of that, a hipster, a groover, a troll and a hat, In Byron Bay Today.
Shixxy to Surf?
Posted on August 14th, 2011 in Manly.Yea its a bad pun but you wouldn’t be feeling like you were missing out if you were doing the City to Surf today. 1-2 ft of week SE swell thats barely breaking at Manly. Bigger at the QC end where even the longboarders were struggling on the high tide to even stand up. After watching all week it doesn’t really get much better at low tide apart from actually starting to break. Still just a drop and fat/no wall. Mal material.
You’ll milk a little more out of the swell somewhere else but have tides and winds to time. Good luck
Nothin’ doin’ at Dee Why

Hello Friends,
Nothing much going on at Dee Why this morning. There were a few bods bobbing around in the water along the beach a little after 0800 when I checked, but I didn’t see anyone catch a wave. From the look of it, the bomb sets might be getting into the waist high range… maybe. Not much of a beach day either. It was foggy and hazy with a fair amount of heavy grey cloud about too (although the radar was showing the showers mostly hanging just offshore). Good day for other things.
Tide was high at 0830, so that wasn’t making a positive contribution either.
The MHL Sydney buoy seems to be off the air, so extrapolating from the others, I’d say it’s probably around 1-1.5 metres from the S-SE with a shortish period (7-8sec).
Outlook is for no substantial improvement to conditions until maybe Tuesday. The long term outlook has gone downhill since yesterday’s run of the models. The super computers have gone off the idea of a substantial midweek spike. There might still be an uptick, but waist to chest is the current prediction. Might be a big kick on Friday, although the wind call is kinda so-so…
Have yourself a good one, and if you’re near a radio at 1000 this morning, tune it to 702 to listen to Simon Marnie

Fish And Fitness, In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Review.
Posted on August 14th, 2011 in Byron.
First the fish, there have been a whole lot of fish around, in Byron Bay today. There’s Salmon a plenty, whales and dolphins (technically not fish) and few big sharks. Thursday morn I witnessed a massive beastie, four to five metres or so cruise around the point, slow right down and take a good long look at the crew in the bay. This is not the first time this week that large pointers have been spotted. It’s whale season, there are heaps of salmon around and the big guys are in town. So be aware and treat them with the respect a large predator deserves. Now for fitness, Katelin at Byron Gym is offering our readers a hefty discount off Byron Gym memberships. If you want to get fit for summer or add some power to your turns, then this will be your chance to save a heap and get it all happening. Stay tuned and we’ll let you know very soon how to score your cheaper memberships at Byron Gym, and get yourself up to speed, In Byron Bay Today.
Hey whadya know? Waves to start out the day
Posted on August 13th, 2011 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
I love being wrong when it comes to the surf. Last night it looked as though we’d have messy and tiny conditions with grey skies. But Huey had a different idea and whilst the swell energy levels and direction haven’t changed much (it’s out of the SE at about 2 metres at sea with an average 8 second period), we have light offshores to begin with, so it’s clean and surfable.
Set waves look to be in the chest to shoulder high range at the Dee Why end of the beach and around chest high at the point. Not a huge number of people in the water either as of 0700. Wind is out of the W to SW and light to begin with, but the Bureau says it’ll gradually drift around to light onshores this afternoon. At the same time the forecast is calling for the swell to weaken away as we head towards a few days of flatness. So, the plan is to hit it now if you can.
This morning’s run of the swell forecast models point to a good finish to the week though. If they have it right, Wednesday to Friday could see some solid SE to S swell for the old Sydney town. Indeed, the fun stuff could start as early as Tuesday if today’s data turns out to align well with reality.
Anyway, it’s always good to have the prospect of juicy surf in the long range forecast.
Have yourself a top old Saturday!

TIDES: H @0755, L @1335
Weather Situation
A high centred to the southwest of Tasmania extends a ridge across eastern New South Wales, while a weak trough approaches the state’s west. During Sunday the high will move to the southern Tasman Sea, where it is expected to strengthen and become very slow-moving, maintaining a ridge along the New South Wales coast until mid-week. The second half of the week is likely to see a cold front traverse the state as the high begins to weaken and move away from the region.

2 – 3 foot fun…
Posted on August 13th, 2011 in Long Reef.I was at a few spots this morning from South Curly to Narrabeen. By far the best was Narrabeen, as the wind wasn’t into it as much. In fact it was nice and glassy and the fun waves were fairly consistent. South Curly still has that backwash and its the biggest around at about 2 – 4 ft. But there is also alot of water movement in between banks. Long Reef is smaller but has banks down the beach towards the Poles. I grabbed a few pics of some surfers having fun. Enjoy. Surf Photos of You.
Cold
Posted on August 13th, 2011 in Manly.Manly is 2-3ft peaks and nice and clean. A bit slow so the longboarders are getting most of the action. As the tide drops it might get better. I snuck over to Curly for the morning session and it was a lot bigger but hard work. Slightly overhead sets, rippy, busy and one of those sessions you see good waves everywhere but where you are. Maybe on the low tide as well but that wind could swing more south and kill Curly. Oh and it’s bloody cold. Water and air.
