PICS BY DON: Sth Narrabeen, Thr evening 29/9

Posted on September 30th, 2011 in Don's surfin' pics, Magic Days, Top stories.

After shooting solid conditions at North Narrabeen, I got on me bike and raced down for a look at the south end of the beach before the light went away. As you’ll see when you watch the highlights gallery on this page, it was extremely photogenic and board-snappingly ferocious. As per usual all pics are available for purchase. Just click on anything of interest and the look top left for the price options.

PICS BY DON: pumping North Narrabeen Thr afternoon 29/9

Posted on September 30th, 2011 in Don's surfin' pics, Top stories.

For not more than a couple hours before dark on Thursday afternoon 29/9, a punchy, 2 metre ENE swell and offshore winds combined to turn the entire Narrabeen stretch into a wave wonderland. I shot at Northy from about 1615 to 1700 and in that time managed to accumulate 300+ shots. Below is a gallery of 20 from that collection. As always, any of these images may be purchased and downloaded immediately. Just click on a pic you want, then look top left for the size/price options link.

Small but protected.

Posted on September 30th, 2011 in South Narrabeen.

There is a small protected little wave at Southy this morning.  1 – 2 foot at best.  Not much else at Longy and the NW wind is fairly strong there.  Surf Photos of You.

Back to small

Posted on September 30th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Brisk westerlies are taking a toll on a weakening east swell this morning. At 0700 I couldn’t see anyone in the water at Dee Why from the crows nest. It looked as though there might be the odd waist high bomb set, but mostly it was smaller than that, plus, with an incoming tide it was also looking pretty fat and flabby.

Yesterday afternoon, it was a very different story at spots that like east swell and though I shouldn’t have taken the time out of my schedule, I did a bit of shooting at Northy and South Narrabeen. I should have the galleries up late today, so stay tuned.

But that was then and this is now. And it doesn’t look like there’s much chance of an improvement for today. By all indications, we’re still on schedule to see the arrival of an extended period of southerly conditions from late today. It looks to me as though your best shot will be an east swell loving stretch as the tide drops. The wind is set to be westerly through the day, so there might be a little something as it weakens ahead of the switch to southerlies.

Spring. What can ya do with it, eh?

Have a top old day!

Weather Situation

A low to the east of Tasmania is moving slowly towards New Zealand, while a ridge of high pressure extends across central Australia. A trough over South Australia will move to western New South Wales later today, before a low develops within the trough as the system moves to the state’s east early Saturday. This low is expected to deepen further as it reaches the coast later on the weekend, before moving rapidly away to the east. Behind this system, a high is expected to move towards Tasmania extending a ridge across southeast Australia.

Oceaneye – Did you miss this yesterday?

Oceaneye - Sep 30th 2011www.Oceaneye.com.au – Did you miss out on this yesterday afternoon? Hey guys, Brad from Oceaneye here. Been a long time since posting on Realsurf. We’ve been very busy building a completely new site. Check it out if you haven’t lately. Anyhow, as most of us know, the surf was crud yesterday morning. After the midday storm and wind change, lunchtime was pumping!! If you missed out, we’ll be sending some photos of to our subscribers today. Too bad the howling offshores have halved the size today!

Mixed-Up Mutants (HMB Jetty)

Posted on September 30th, 2011 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Reports, Surf Sessions.

Another pop-up NW swell filled in the night before last and is on the fade today, plus there’s a small SW swell in the water. The combo produced some mixed-up, sloppy and shifty peaks at the socked-in Jetty. While Jenn worked on the basics in the whitewater, Luke joined me in the lineup with a few other guys. We both aborted paddling for one wave that Luke said “just went all mutant on us,” contorting into an unrideable shape.

I caught and rode a lesser mutant, taking off right, turning left as the wave re-directed and not making it down the stair-step. Fun! Amidst a handful of other rides, I got a nice left and then a chest-high right in to the beach, both with shoulders that held up for a bit.

Any day that begins in the ocean is a good day!

Surfline: We have a mix of mainly easing NW-WNW (280-310+) swell and some small SSW groundswell running this morning. Better exposures are good for waist-shoulder-head high surf, with sets up to 2-3′ overhead for standouts early in the morning. It’s hard to get a look at most breaks with patchy dense fog settled in along the coast. Winds are light/variable from the South, so conditions are likely pretty clean. Buoy 46012: (Wave) SWELL: 6.6 ft at 12.1 s NW 79 / WIND WAVE: 2.0 ft at 4.5 s WNW / WVHT: 6.6 ft / APD: 7.6 s / MWD: 305° (Met) WSPD: 12 kts / GST: 16 kts / WVHT: 6.6 ft / DPD: 13.0 s / WDIR: 150° / ATMP: 57.7° F / WTMP: 56.7° F. A Spring Thing, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on September 30th, 2011 in Byron.

Folks were floating around town on random gusts of a gale force northerly, in Byron Bay today. The question often repeated was ‘what’s with this wind today’. Well this weather happens regularly at this time of year it’s a spring thing. It may turn out be a single event, but I doubt it. As past seasons have shown us, the wind can and often does howl from the north, then from the south. It then swings back to the north to repeat the pattern. This can sometimes go one for months. It’s nothing special or even particularly weird; it’s just the north coast in spring. One thing is certain, whether it’s for a few days, or it lasts right up until Christmas, as it has at times in the past. There’s no use in fighting it, as Huey always wins. So just adjust, look for waves where you can, and be grateful when it doesn’t blow the spring thing wind, In Byron Bay Today.

Protected 2 – 3 foot…

Posted on September 29th, 2011 in Longy, Surf Reports.

Arvo update:  1.30pm:  Sun came out, wind from the WNW, SE ground swell 2 – 4 foot, Local Schoolies getting some::    Morning:There is a moderate NW breeze up early.  This is going to strengthen today and into tomorrow to around 30 knots.  The swell is from the E at around 2 – 4 foot.  There were some clean, peaky waves at Long Reef and a few of the locals were getting a few out in front of the tower.  Enjoy.  Surf Photos of You.

Cool, breezy, cloudy and small at Dee Why

Posted on September 29th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Once again you’d have to say of Dee Why that it would better to look elsewhere. It can be okay, even good, with the right east swell, but not always, or even often. The MHL buoy off Sydney is showing a couple metres of 9 second near east swell, but Dee Why is looking fat, inconsistent and mostly small under Thursday morning’s dull grey skies.

Winds were light early and expected to swing around to offshore later. That probably won’t help the weakening east swell, but on the other hand, it could mean that there are still some clean if inconsistent little  set waves at exposed spots.

The forecast models have been gyrating around this week and the latest run of the interpretations sees them going cold again on our prospects for next week. There might be a little something late Friday-early Saturday if a south pulse develops in the way the models forecast. The Bureau says we should have light SW winds for the early too, so here’s hoping we get something…

Go well!
