Small, no, tiny Saturday
Posted on September 17th, 2011 in Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
Corker of a Saturday morning. Too bad about the micro waves. Still, shouldn’t complain too loudly because although it was maybe knee to thigh, Dee Why beach did have a few catchable ones for the early. The incoming tide will likely swamp it and then this afternoon we’ll have a NE seabreeze of 10-15 kts which will beat up the open stretches.
Although we’re in for a week of summery daytime temps, the water is still around the 17 mark, so it’s not time to abandon the rubber.
Outlook for tomorrow is more of the same microness, although there might be a little uptick in surf size if the forecast is correct and we end up with a 10-20 kt south change around midday. I’ll be in at Ultimo Sunday morning to play my part in another episode of the Sons of Beaches on 702 ABC radio with Simon Marnie and Dr Rob Brander.
And the rest of the week? Well, the less said about that the better if you live on Australia’s east coast. This morning’s run of the swell models is a picture of gloom – beautiful summery days, but microscopic short period windswell. Well, it is spring after all…
Have yourself a top old Saturday!

Weather Situation
A high pressure system centred over Queensland extends a ridge into northern New South Wales. This system will remain stationary through the weekend, while weak cold fronts from the Southern Ocean pass to the south. One of these fronts is expected to bring a southerly change to some districts overnight or on Sunday, however this will be short-lived. A slightly more vigorous front is forecast early in the new week.

Nice One
Posted on September 17th, 2011 in Manly. Some nice consistent 2ft SE lines today. There’s a SSW wind at present which is supposed to go NW for a time which would be better. Will be a fun size at south magnets but you should be out now chasing the lower side of the tide before the 11am high and arvo seabreezes.
Cracker day. Enjoy.
Gardening, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on September 17th, 2011 in Byron. You got it folks, the school holidays have started, in Byron Bay today. Not officially of course, there’s another week to go for the local groms, just hope Huey turns on some waves for them. Meanwhile the Queensland schools finished this week, and thar be many folks roaming around the bay already. Unfortunately there is not a whole lot of good sand available right now, sad to say. But the banks have changed a little over the last week or so and there simply are not as many waves to go around as there were before in the bay. So as the number of available waves decreases for a spell and the crew begins to swell a little as well. This spring break may well be an opportune moment to catch up on some of that long overdue gardening, In Byron Bay Today.
Very slight uptick this morning

Hello Friends,
Thanks to an increase in the average period over the last 24 hours, we had a few small waves along the Dee Why stretch for the early. As today’s picture shows, it wasn’t exactly big, but it was sunny and glassy and kind of fun looking. The Sydney MHL buoy was reporting about 1.5 metres of south swell with an average period of around 9 seconds. That should mean that south swell spots will have offer knee to waist high plus waves before the high tide swamps things later this morning. Wind is light and offshore as I tap this out. The Bureau says it’ll go around to the northern quarters and possibly be NE-NW this afternoon when the tide drops back again.
Have yourself a top old Friday and keep on smilin’ through!

Small and smooth

Sneaky
Posted on September 16th, 2011 in Manly.Super clean 1-2ft this morning with some nice sneaky SE groundy sets every now and then. Worth a check at sth magnets quickly before high tide fills in (10:15am)
Marginal at best
Posted on September 15th, 2011 in Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
Cloudy with a 30% chance of rain today along Sydney’s beaches. But there’s almost no swell. Overnight the average period plummeted from around 10 seconds to about seven. And that means waves at south-exposed spots will be struggling to make waist high. A high tide at 0940 won’t help much either.
There were a few folks in the water at Dee Why when I grabbed the picture at around 0700. Waves looked to be about knee to waist and very weak and crumbly.
I wish I could report some suggestion of a significant improvement in the models’ outlook, but sadly it looks as though the east coast will be marginal to flat for at least another week. If you’re desperate for a wave, I’d be heading down to Vicco because from the look of the models it’s going to be pumping. You’ll want some pretty decent rubber though as sea temps are in the mid to low teens. Yikes!
Have yourself a top old day!
