Damn Orca’s, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on October 27th, 2011 in Byron.Ok so we had a little chat about sharks and how they affect us surfers, in Byron Bay today. But after witnessing today’s micro slide session, I have come to realise it is the Inflatable Orca’s that are truly terrifying in the bay. These things are serious, fast, stealthy beasts. Those being stalked barely recognise the great predator as it sneaks up on them mercilessly from behind. So while you’re all keeping an eye out for sharks you’d better add those damn Orcas to the list of beasties best avoided, In Byron Bay Today.
Not much going on
Posted on October 26th, 2011 in Big Picture, North Narrabeen, South Narrabeen.

Hello Friends,
Dull and small around the place this morning. A 1.84 m high tide at 0710 and 15-20 kt SSE wind were doing a demolition job on the decaying south east wind swell. I didn’t see anyone in the water at Dee Why, nor on the Collaroy-Narrabeen stretch. Swell at sea is fading and as of first light was at around the 2 metre mark out at sea with an average period of 8 seconds.
The swell models are still showing a long period pulse hitting tomorrow, but the wind forecast is not looking good. The SE’ly is set to carry on through Thursday evening. It may tail off, so there could possibly be something marginal toward the end of the day. Thereafter, the aforementioned models show us going back to micro conditions through the weekend – and beyond.
Hope your Wednesday is a good one.
Weather Situation
A cold front lies over the far north coast and a high pressure system is located in the Bight. This high will move over the southern Tasman Sea during the day establishing an onshore airstream. A trough extends southwards from Queensland into northern NSW. Another frontal system and associated trough move into southwest NSW later on Friday before moving across the state over the weekend.

Scruffy afternoon
Posted on October 26th, 2011 in Big Picture, Dee Why.
Not the prettiest sight this afternoon at Dee Why. We had dull grey skies and a chilly 15kt SE’ly was roughing up about 2 metres of 8 sec period SSE swell. Even so, there were a few hardy types having a lash at it. Looked like catching anything was a challenge, but at least the bigger ones were pushing into the chest high plus range.
The Bureau says it’ll be east to SE 10-15 kts tomorrow with a couple metres of SE swell. There’s a 40% chance of rain and a very high tide at about 0710. The models are still calling for long period energy, so just maybe there will be enough on it to get into the protected corners… know any high tide SE swell loving spots that fit that description?
Catchya tomorrow morning!
Broke 2ft?
Posted on October 26th, 2011 in Manly.Well there’s finally something almost breaking the 2ft mark but it’s not pretty. Looks about 3ft of south swell but a brisk southerly wind is pushing people to south corners where its smaller but cleaner. I’m too lazy to walk down there but there almost looked like a shoulder high set in the distance. Wind is supposed to get worse but the tide also needs to drop to help things too.
An Editorial On Sharks, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on October 26th, 2011 in Byron, Environment, News Stories. With all the media attention on the latest tragic shark attack in West Australia and the current Great White sightings, in Byron Bay today. I thought now is probably a good time to just remind folks of the reality of surfing with sharks these days. Firstly my sincerest condolences to all the family and friends of all the victims of any shark attacks, both recent and those long ago. I mean really let’s face it, the primal fear and terror of being eaten alive, is about as heavy as it gets. But that is not what this editorial is about; it is about the ,,,,,,,, for the full editorial go to In Byron Bay Today.

Gloomy, drizzly morning
Posted on October 25th, 2011 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Nothing much doing at Dee Why this morning. The atmosphere was too thick for my usual start of the day snapshot but there wasn’t anything to take a picture of so far as I could tell. Wind was light SE at 0700 and the MHL buoy was showing about a metre from the east at about 8 seconds apart.
According to the forecast the wind will be out of the south by lunch and it’ll be blowing 20-25 kts. As that happens, the average height of the wind swell at sea will swing around to line up with the wind direction while also building up to about 2 metres. As a matter of interest, the average height down at Eden popped up into the 3 metre range early this morning.
This morning’s batch of swell forecast interpretations is still showing a long period pulse for Thursday. Unfortunately we’re told by the Bureau that the wind will be SE at 10-15kts. Not a great recipe sadly. And it looks as though the generally onshore winds are set to be part of our lives for at least the next week.
Ah well, at least the water has been getting warmer. Summer is coming friends!
Go well with your Tuesday plans everybody.

Weather Situation
A stationary high pressure system over the northern Tasman Sea extends a ridge into northern New South Wales. This high pressure ridge is weakening ahead of a cold front that is currently situated over southern New South Wales. A trough ahead of the front has brought a southerly change to the coast just north of Sydney. The front is forecast to sweep across southeast during today and Wednesday, extending the southerly change to most of the New South Wales coast before it weakens into a trough over the north. Following this, the next high is forecast to move from the Bight to the southern Tasman Sea mid-week, establishing an onshore airstream.

Sancar has previously shown that a protein called XPA, responsible for repairing the DNA damage wrought by UV radiation, waxes and wanes throughout the day. In a study published online the week of October 24-30 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, he and his colleagues looked to see if the cyclical nature of this
Sick of Leftovers
Posted on October 25th, 2011 in Manly.I’m sick of using the word leftover. 1-2ft of NE windswell on a grey day. Southerly just hit at 7:30am with high tide so shorey’s in the south corners for now and maybe a few rides, bank dependent, as the tide runs out. Pretty ordinary stuff.
Back Up, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on October 25th, 2011 in Byron.Huey backed up with a few sweet clean little lines before the northerly began to howl for real, in Byron Bay today. But once that blow took hold of the show it was not so good for the rest of the day. Mix it all up with a way low tide as we head into a new moon, and well there’s not much else to say. Speaking of back up, I somehow managed to get my back all up and out of whack. Hmm maybe it was all that back slapping going on around the bay. But I digress, a quick visit to Brent The miracle worker Verco from Mullumbimby Chiropractic and I was able to get on with the job (thanks Brent), In Byron Bay Today.
