Finally spring..

Posted on October 19th, 2011 in Long Reef.

There is a small 2 foot SE and with hardly a breath of wind early conditions were nice at Longy this morning.  Tide abit low and there were a few closeouts but a few had some fun little ones.  Enjoy.  Surf Photos of You.

Touch Bigger

Posted on October 19th, 2011 in Manly.

Swell is either a touch bigger or a touch more southeast than south.  Some shoulder high bomb sets, nice and clean and shortboardable at some banks.  Try a south magnet to get more.  Tide (8am ish)and sun are perfect for a morning session. Have fun if you can.

Inventive Ways, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on October 19th, 2011 in Byron.

Seems the swell and wind were backing off at the same time, in Byron Bay today. Yes there were waves, and yes there were plenty of crew putting their claim on a few. It wasn’t huge, and if I’m really deeply honest, it wasn’t actually as good as it looked. There’s a weird backwash going on, and some new holes in the bank causing it to twist upon itself in ever more inventive ways. But that didn’t stop the crew from getting super enthusiastic about what was on offer in the bay today. When we consider that it’s spring, and that the usual wind for this season is a howling northerly, well can’t blame folks for grabbing it while it lasts. Whether it lasts much longer or not is entirely up to Huey. But from what we saw, I’d say it may be starting to back off already, In Byron Bay Today.

Small bumps sighted

Posted on October 18th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

A small number of early risers were flopping around in the small and weak but glassy conditions at Dee Why beach this morning. Swell is out of the south. It’s around 2 metres at sea with an average period of around 8 seconds. What that means is that every now and then you get a set into the waist high range. It’s an improvement over the last week or so, but only just barely.

If you’ve got a hole in the schedule, your best plan pretty obviously is to head for your favourite south swell magnet. That short period means we can’t expect much refraction (as evidenced by the little things at the point), so a good, dead south exposure is the best bet.

Wind is currently light and offshore but the Bureau says we’ll have a E to NE breeze later.

Surf outlook is marginal for as far ahead as the models project. There’s activity in the southern ocean, but frustratingly it is being directed away from our swell window by a succession of high pressure systems. Your best hope is to head for west exposed locations in Vicco or to Margaret River et al. Might be something fun on the NW coast of NZ’s north island.

Keep on smilin’!

Better than yesterday.

There are a few peaky short period waves around this morning.  2 – 3 foot.  Enjoy.  Surf Photos of You.

Clean but Weak

Posted on October 18th, 2011 in Manly.

Nice clean and sunny conditions at last but the swell is weak.  Need a longboard to make the most of the 1-2ft southswell sets or maybe try Curly to milk a tad more juice out of things while the tide is low and incoming.

Nibbles, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on October 18th, 2011 in Byron.

Now I can’t confirm this, but, the word getting around town, in Byron Bay today. Is that the Big White Pointer that’s been hanging around is still here and has taken to menacing kayaks in the bay. Apparently the old beastie had a jolly good nibble at one today. Or at least so we’re told, either way, I have now heard from several reliable and experienced sources that have seen it up close, the Beastie is huge, biblically huge. Some crew are calling it the biggest Pointer they have seen around these parts for years. As for us well we haven’t spotted it yet. But just the same, I’d be watching the shadows for any panicked schools of fish, while keeping my nostrils peeled for strong fish oil smells. Because if that beastie is now nibbling kayaks, odds are it may be feeling a tad territorial about its temporary home, In Byron Bay Today.

Mondayitis

Posted on October 17th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

As expected, it’s grey, drizzly and junky – but not flat. Swell is averaging around the 2 metres, it’s dead south and the average period is around 8 seconds with some 11 second component. Wind was around 15kts from the south, so there should be a few options around. However, if Dee Why’s a guide, there isn’t much. True, it’s not flat, but the conditions had attracted only one punter at Dee Why when I checked.

I’ll keep an eye on it through the day because the forecast calls for the wind to drop off a bit. Tomorrow morning could potentially be worth an effort because the wind is supposed to be very light and we should still have a little south energy.

Get on your kite and ride.

Posted on October 17th, 2011 in Long Reef.

This 14 – 16 knot SSE wind is making it ideal for Kite Surfing.  Both Long Reef and Narrabeen seem to be good spots this afternoon.  Not much on the surf front, other than its has increased a little but is a blown out mess. Enjoy.  At least the sun is out compared to this morning’s dreariness.  Surf Photos of You.
