Wind moaning in the rigging and all around the dull sea

Posted on October 13th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Messy and ESE this morning at Dee Why. Throw in about 1.5 metres of 7 second period S wind swell, and you have a day for a walk on the beach or some other non-surfing activity.

I’m not overly impressed with the look of the forecast models this morning. If those supercomputers over in North America have done their sums correctly, we’re probably looking down the barrel of a week at least of this dispiriting dribble. It’s a story of onshores and short period, mainly south wind swell.

Grasping at straws maybe, but the WAMs are showing a massive system coming across the southern ocean and reaching Tassie around Monday. This morning’s run of the data shows the energy powering eastward rather than up into our swell window. Still, these systems do sometimes defy early predictions… it’s a long shot anyway…

Have yourself a great Thursday one and all.

Weather Situation

A high pressure system over the eastern Bight extends a ridge towards the Coral Sea. It will move eastwards today, maintaining a ridge to the north coast. A trough will move over South Australia following this high. A cold front within the trough will reach the far west of NSW late Friday. The front will cross western NSW during Saturday and the southerly change will move along the coast from late Saturday and during Sunday.

The Things We Do, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on October 13th, 2011 in Byron.

Now before you all go getting excited, no there’s no swell yet, in Byron Bay today. But Huey briefly whipped up just enough wind slop for us desperados to convince ourselves it was worth a play. Geez the things we do when desperate for a slide. Truth is it was still way small, very lumpy except for a brief moment where it clean, but apart from that it really didn’t make the scene. But hey, we’re brave, tough and a little weird around here. We’ll ride almost anything without hesitation or fear, In Byron Bay Today.

Bigger over the hill.

There were a few waves at Curl Curl this morning.  As we know its a swell magnet expecially n the SE swells.  Around 2 – 4 foot and there is a few little peaks right along the beach.  Wind out of the SW early forecast to turn more south to SE.  Enjoy.  Surf Photos of You for more pics.

Tininess at Dee Why this morning

Posted on October 12th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

After checking the forecasts late last night, I was liking our chances for a little something this morning. At 0600 the MHL buoy was indeed showing almost two metres of south swell with an average period of about 9 seconds. That should be producing more activity than I saw from the crows nest at 0715. But my picture tells the story: no one was in the water at Dee Why despite light offshores and sunny skies.

I’d be looking at options at northern ends and your favourite south swell magnet.

The winds are expected to come around to the SE by midday, so you won’t want to leave it too late either.

TIDES: H @0800, L @1420

Outlook is for small waves tomorrow then tiny to flat into the weekend.

Go well with your Wednesday!

Weather Situation

A high pressure system over the eastern Bight extends a ridge towards the Coral Sea. It will move eastwards over the next few days, maintaining a ridge to the north coast as a cold front approaches the west of the state. The front will cross NSW during Saturday, and extend a southerly change along the coast during Sunday.

High and Low, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on October 12th, 2011 in Byron.

As we all take care of long forgotten chores, or just watch the grass grow for a spell. We got one thing in common; we’re waiting for swell, in Byron Bay today. You gotta admit it; Huey does have a sense of humour. The local crew were all sweating on the holiday crowds coming to an end. But the very minute the visitors left, so did the swell leave as well. It’s just the way it goes sometimes, it’s looking like one of those weeks when you either choose to let it go, or search in vain high and low, In Byron Bay Today.

Nothin’ doin’

Posted on October 11th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

All the rugs are rolled up, the furniture’s against the walls, everybody’s ready, but the band just called to say they can’t make it. We’re looking at flatness folks. After momentarily hitting a 2 metre peak late yesterday morning, the south swell has faded to half that size. Worse, the average period dropped from nearly 9 seconds to less than 7 this morning.

Too bad, because it’s supposed to be offshore and sunny this morning. Oh well, what can ya do?

According to this morning’s swell modelling, the energy levels should come up through the day and possibly be into the surfable range tomorrow. I don’t see any obvious signs in the buoy data, so I guess we shall see…

Go well with your Tuesday!

Weather Situation
A cold front will bring a southwesterly change along New South Wales coast during Tuesday and a high pressure system near the Bight is slowly moving east extending a ridge behind the front. The high is expected to move over the southwestern Tasman Sea Wednesday night and then to move towards New Zealand during Thursday and Friday maintaining the ridge to the north coast.
Forecast for Tuesday until midnight
Winds
West to southwesterly 15 to 20 knots tending southeast to southwesterly up to 15 knots around midday.
Seas
Up to 2 metres decreasing to below 1 metre by early evening.
Swell
Southerly about 1.5 metres.
Wednesday 12 October
Winds
West to southwesterly 5 to 15 knots tending south to southeasterly around midday. Inshore sea breezes.
Seas
Below 1 metre.
Swell
Southerly 2 metres.
Thursday 13 October
Winds
East to southeasterly 5 to 10 knots tending east to northeasterly during the afternoon then increasing to 10 to 20 knots during the evening. Inshore sea breezes.
Seas
Below 1 metre.
Swell
Southerly about 2 metres.

Not today

Not much surfing will be done today.  1 foot with an early high and gusty SW wind.  May be some thing happening tomorrow.  Enjoy.  Surf Photos of You.

It’s a mighty unmighty morning

Posted on October 10th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Looked at both the Collaroy-Narrabeen and Long Reef-Dee Why stretches this morning. Tide was pretty full, but the real problem was the puny south swell. It’s around the metre mark out at sea and the average period is a paltry 7 seconds. The consequence is an entirely predictable near flat ocean.

There is a chance of a slight improvement later today as the tide drops and, if we’re lucky, a weak south pulse reaches the Sydney region. The pulse was about a 2m at Eden yesterday evening and closer to 3m at Batemans Bay in the early morning hours. Assuming it gets to us, I’d say a check around lunch time might be a plan. The wind is not a factor now, but by then the Bureau says it will be out of the easterly quarters as it moves around to the NE.

From the shape of this morning’s forecast models, tomorrow isn’t looking flash, but there might be a little something from the south on Wednesday.

Beyond that it looks like small, messy and generally onshore through the weekend.

Ah well! So it goes eh? Have yourself a top old Monday.

TIDES: H @0655, L @1300

Weather Situation

A weakening cold front is moving along New South Wales central coast. Another cold front will bring southerly change to the southern half of the coast during Tuesday. Behind the front, a high pressure system will move south of the Bight extending a ridge to the southwestern Tasman Sea.

Forecast for Monday until midnight

Winds
Southerly 10 to 20 knots tending southwesterly 10 to 15 knots during the morning then tending east to northeasterly up to 15 knots during the afternoon. Winds tending northwesterly about 10 knots later in the evening.
Seas
About 1 metre.
Swell
Southerly about 1 metre.

Tuesday 11 October

Winds
West to southwesterly 10 to 20 knots tending southeast to southwesterly up to 15 knots around midday.
Seas
1 to 2 metres.
Swell
Southeasterly 1 metre.

Wednesday 12 October

Winds

West to southwesterly 10 to 15 knots tending south to southeasterly later.

Seas

Below 1 metre.

Swell

Southerly 1 metre.
