Peak Season, In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Review.
Posted on November 27th, 2011 in Byron.Yes folks as we are told to expect the town to swell by an extra five to ten thousand people, in Byron bay today. Many of the local crew have once again gone to ground, while wondering if we really need to further extend peak season in the bay. Here’s a question for the advocates of unrestrained mass tourism in Byron Bay. When is enough, enough, when do the local community get a little down time? This was once a quiet time of year. The community got a couple of weeks break to be ready for the Christmas rush. Now it’s straight into peak season. If folks don’t get a little rest they eventually burn out. We’re not talking about the visitors themselves. They as individuals are not the problem. They are just trying to enjoy themselves, as do any other visitors to any place at any time. But it doesn’t hurt to question the numbers and the impact these numbers have on the community. We are now feeling the impact of what is fast becoming a concerted effort by some, to produce a nonstop tourism peak season, In Byron Bay Today.

Toxic
Posted on November 26th, 2011 in Manly.Manly council website says the Manly lagoon is “one of the most polluted waterways on the East Coast” On days like today it pours that filth into the Queenscliff lineup and guys paddle out and surf right in the middle of it. Hardcore NE wind and rain blowing up 3ft or so of ugly windswell. In conditions like this at some point there can be rideable waves at Manly but you’ll need to time it. High tide 9:33am Low 4:15pm.
Forecast says clearing and wind edging around to the N/NW which could mean good things later if you are happy to risk an ear infection.

Stay in bed Saturday morning, but maybe this arvo…
Posted on November 26th, 2011 in Big Picture.Midday update: Actual sunshine witnessed for the first time in days. And I can finally see the beach from the crows nest once more. Not all that fabulous looking it has to be admitted. And the water will be freshly topped up with a nice dose of street run-off. Swell has held just above the 2 metre mark from the ENE and the average period is creeping up toward the 8 second mark. So, if you don’t mind the possibility of playing host to some interesting organism or other, I’d say there should be a chance of a little something at exposed spots. Figure knee to waist with the odd bigger one.
Have fun!

Earlier I wrote: Hello Friends,
Another thoroughly disreputable morning along Sydney’s beaches. Wind was blowing steadily and vigorously from the ENE at 20-30 kts. Visibility on the coast was about 300 metres and it was raining. If ever there was a morning to just roll over and go back to sleep, this was it.
The MHL buoy doesn’t sleep though. As the day got started, it was showing the dominant wind swell energy coming from the east at about 7 seconds apart. Average size of the waves at sea pushed up a little overnight into the 2 metre range.
This morning’s rainy skies should clear away to a mostly sunny afternoon as the wind swings around to the north to NW. With any luck, that should mean a reasonable prospect of a wave of some sort for the late – in those semi-exposed north corners.
By then the tide will have well and truly dropped from this morning’s big high at 0830. Low’s around 1515, so there will also be a little tidal push to help things along for the late. You might want to pack the springy though because the NE’r is likely to have dropped the water temp a bit.
Looking ahead, tomorrow should see a continuation of the NW winds early, but these are due to track around to the SW and then go lightly southerly by nightfall tomorrow. Given the weak, local nature of the wind swell, I’d expect the energy levels to fade away pretty quickly too. Could be a little waist high wave early at spots that are unfazed by a very high tide.
Have yourself a top old day!

Weather Situation
A low is centred over Victoria, with an associated trough extending north through inland New South Wales and Queensland. This system is moving gradually east, and by late this evening the low is expected to be east of Bass Strait with the trough just clear of the far northeast of the state. The trough should continue to move away across the Tasman Sea during Sunday as a weak high pressure system approaches from the west. This high is forecast to reach the Tasman Sea on Monday, with another trough developing over the Bight likely to reach the east coast mid-week.

Posted on November 25th, 2011 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Another grey and dripping morning with visibility down to about a kilometre. Swell has come around to the east. It’s about 1.5 metres on average, but the period is still a paltry 7 seconds. The Bureau says it’ll be cloudy with mist patches and drizzle increasing to periods of rain as the east south easterly (blergh!) goes from the present 10-12 kts to 20-25 kts from the east to north-east. To the extent that it matters, tide swings about two metres from a high at 0740 to the low at 1420.
I’m keeping my hopes modest for tomorrow, but I do note that the Bureau says the wind should swing W-NW around lunch time. If the NE’r picks up as predicted later today, there might be a little something still coming in as the wind changes tomorrow.
Have yourself a great Friday!
Here’s a grab from the WRL cam of south Narrabeen. Looks as though Council’s spread out all that sand from Northy lagoon…

Weather Situation
A broad trough, which lies over inland New South Wales on Friday, will contract to the coast on Saturday before moving further east across the Tasman Sea on Sunday. A weak high pressure ridge over the coast will weaken on Saturday as the trough draws closer. Monday could see a weak ridge redeveloping over New South Wales ahead of another trough approaching from the west.
Forecast for Friday until midnight

- Swell
- Southeasterly 0.5 to 1.5 metres.

- Swell
Easterly 1.5 metres.
Office Day
Posted on November 25th, 2011 in Manly. If there’s swell there it’s just being eaten by a high tide. No one was out and I couldn’t even find any wave to photograph. Weekend forecasts have some windows of hope for a session or 2. Keep an eye out Sat arvo maybe. Today is office day.
If The Mist Fits, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on November 25th, 2011 in Byron, Surf Reports. So there we have it, yes folks we did receive a daily reprieve from the northerly airstream, in Byron Bay today. The wind swung to the southwest in the wee hours of the morning bringing rain, cooler air, and a fine mist that just kept everything wet between downpours, in the bay. The water was absolutely icy for these climbs, yet that’s not surprising after all that wind. But there were some small, brown, dribbly utterly powerless and occasionally clean little waves. Doesn’t sound too inviting huh, well it depends on how you see it. This time of year, any day that’s offshore in the bay, is a bonus, and despite the lack of swell it was offshore all day. So yeah it was chilly and kind of wet and misty and grey and not particularly exciting. But the crew decided to just toughen up, get grateful and make the most of it anyway. I mean really what else is there to do. We reckon if the mist fits, wear it, In Byron Bay Today.
Junky but bigger
Posted on November 24th, 2011 in Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
As anticipated by the swell models, it’s come up. But then so has the SE wind. It was in the 15-20 kt range so, as you can see from the pic, surface conditions were pretty junky. Swell is around the 2 metre mark off Sydney and as you might expect, it’s coming from the same direction as the wind at about 7 seconds apart.
It’s too scrappy to do anything at the point, but if you were extra keen, you might be able to get the odd waist to chest high bomb in the beachy. Tide was high at about 0750, so there was a fatness factor as well.
The Bureau says we can expect another shower or two and tomorrow we’ll be back to rain at times for another couple days. Rain — and onshores. Great combo. Well, to be fair, the wind call for Saturday is NW by midday, so we’re in with a chance for Saturday afternoon in north corners.
Have yourself a great Thursday one and all!
Weather Situation
A high is centred to the northeast of New Zealand, and another south of the Bight. A broad trough between these systems will remain over central and northern New South Wales for the next few days, while a possible low may develop today on another trough just off the North Coast. This offshore trough is likely to weaken during Friday as an onshore airstream develops along New South Wales coast. The main inland trough is expected to start moving east on Saturday with onshore winds strengthening in the south, followed by westerlies developing on Sunday in a wake of the trough.
Forecast for Thursday until midnight
