Strings
Posted on November 24th, 2011 in Manly. When you spot a kitesurfer out your window you know its not a good sign. Ugly strong SE onshore and optimistically you might say the odd 3 footer but thats cause we are desperate from our wave drought. Not for me today.
Black Northerlies, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on November 24th, 2011 in Byron. So who is getting just a tad sick of the current spring weather, in Byron Bay today? It just keeps going huh, howling wind, hot humid nights, small gutless wind swell, and cold water from the up wellings. When the wind does eventually change it’s nothing more than a daily reprieve which tends to blow the wind swell flat, and then it’s back to the northerlies again. Yes the wind can and often does build up the sand which is a blessing, yet it can also produce holes in the banks as well. Many moons ago, before all the crowds arrived the old salts around here used to call this weather a black northerly. Partly, because this wind would often come with a thick cover of cloud, although not always. But mainly because after a few weeks of howling wind, humidity and everything getting covered in salt spray from the bay, the locals moods tended to get a bit dark. So will it change? Of course it will, maybe even tonight. But it will also go back to the north with a vengeance, and it’ll keep doing it until the first of the summer lows finally forms up north. Once that happens, it’ll finally break the stranglehold of the black northerlies, In Byron Bay Today.
Rainy morning
Posted on November 23rd, 2011 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Tide was high right on 0600 and it was raining steadily. A couple hours later, it’s still raining steadily and the MHL buoy is showing a barely-there SE wind swell. Average height at sea is about half a metre and average period is 7 seconds. Not that it mattered much, but the wind was quite light early. The Bureau is calling for it to kick into the 20-25kts from the SE.
According to this morning’s marine forecast, the Bureau says we’re in for onshores through Friday. And the swell’s not supposed to perk up too much. Showers and mostly grey skies appear to be on the cards right through the weekend.
As the winds push up, we should get an increase in swell size. On Saturday and Sunday, some of the models are showing a brief easterly pulse into the chest range. At this stage, peak energy day looks to be Saturday.
Keep dry and have yourself a happy Wednesday!

Weather Situation
A high is centred to the north of New Zealand, and another near Western Australia. A broad trough between these systems will remain over central and northern New South Wales for the next few days. The high near Western Australia is forecast to strengthen and move slowly east during Wednesday and Thursday, preceded by a cooler southerly change along the coast.

Flat AND Raining
Posted on November 23rd, 2011 in Manly.Looked dead flat to me but considering it is raining and miserable there is actually a few dots floating around down Manly way in the water. Probably mad backpackers rather than lucky surfers. And forecasts are saying waves to break the 3ft mark tomorrow. Jeez imagine that…..
Chilly Bits, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on November 23rd, 2011 in Byron.Well ok not on land, it was plenty humid and warm enough in Byron Bay today. But the thing that caught the schoolies off guard was how cold the water was today. They came frolicking down for a surf only quickly bolt again for the warmth of the sand. What’s with this f%$#ing cold water, one of them asked? It’s called up-welling, explains I. This was met with a blank stare and much muttering at me about how it’s Byron Bay and what a rip off it is. The water is cold and brown it’s nothing like they advertised in the websites etc. Not our website I pointed out, but it fell on deaf ears. Oh well such is life, as any old crusty worth their salt knows all too well. Strong northerlies pull the cold dark nutrient rich water up from the murky depths and push in towards shore. So there you have it that explains the chilly bits. As for the attitude, well there is no explaining that, In Byron Bay Today.
Oh we’re bump, bumping along
Posted on November 22nd, 2011 in Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
95% chance of rain today apparently. Tide’s low at 1125 and the wind’ll be out of the westerly quarters from about midday. Sadly, there is almost no swell energy to be detected. The MHL buoy off Sydney was recording about a metre of east wind swell at about 8 seconds.
Once again, you’ll need to be extra keen to bother with the conditions. Of the 2 million or so people within 50 kms of the place, not one was visible in the water at Dee Why.
This morning’s interpretations of the wave forecast models from NOAA are all agreeing that we’re in for continued near-flatness for at least a couple more days. From about Thursday onward it seems as though we might see a boost into the surfable range as a SSE pulse heads our way. At this stage it looks as though chest high is not totally out of the question at exposed spots. There is a catch of course, and it’s a biggie: the Bureau also says the wind will be onshore from the SE at 20-25 kts. Blergh.
There seems to be some prospect of a sunny Sunday though. And there might be chest high waves out’ve the NE with, get this, offshores! Sounds too good to be true, but I don’t care, I’m going to daydream about it anyway!
Have a great Tuesday one and all, and just stay happy!

Posted on November 22nd, 2011 in Long Reef. There is hardly a breath of wind early. The surface is glassy but the waves are tiny. 1 foot SSE swell. Maybe a little bigger Thursday. Enjoy. Surf Photos of You.
