Nothing doing at Longy.

Not much to say about the surf this morning…  1 – 2 foot and fat with the early high.  A struggle to put 2 turns in.  Surf Photos of You.

Patience, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on November 10th, 2011 in Byron.

Yeah I know it’s easier said than done, its one thing to say have patience it’s an entirely different thing to practice it, in Byron Bay today. Look at it this way, Huey is going to do what Huey is going to do. Fighting it and wishing it was otherwise will only drive us all nuts. The simple fact is that the northerly continues to blow, the swell dropped even lower and we now have full moon low tides to deal with as well in the bay. So yeah end result is that the surf was pretty damn lame. But hey you know, lame is surf is still better than no surf, and some crew made an effort to simply make the most of what was on offer, ourselves included. In the meantime, remember it’s the spring into summer transition period. This weather pattern could hold for a long time yet. It’s Huey’s way of offering us the opportunity to develop some patience, In Byron Bay Today.

Yep, just as small as yesterday

Posted on November 9th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,
The best surf news this morning is that our summer water temps appear to be filling in. The offshore buoy data shows about a metre of 8 second east wind swell and a water temp of 21. Our inshore temps are not always the same as out at sea, so your mileage may vary.

This morning’s batch of WAM interpretations shows a consensus view of continued flat to barely surfable conditions into the weekend and marginal at best for next week.

Hang in there everybody, it’ll be back one day…

Keep on smilin’!

Weather Situation
A slow-moving high pressure system over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge to the New South Wales north coast, while a broad trough of low pressure is approaching the state’s west. Between these two systems, warm northerly winds are moving over the coast. The trough will reach western New South Wales this evening as it links with a cold front passing to the south, and is expected to bring a gusty southerly change to the southern and central coasts during Thursday before weakening over the north. By Saturday a new high is forecast to be above the Tasman Sea, bringing a return to generally northerly winds along the New South Wales coast.
Forecast for Wednesday until midnight
Winds
Variable around 5 knots inshore at first, otherwise north to northwesterly 5 to 15 knots becoming northerly 15 to 20 knots in the afternoon and evening.
Seas
Below 1 metre.
Swell

Weather
Isolated thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.
Thursday 10 November

Dee Why: Holding pattern

Posted on November 9th, 2011 in Surf Reports.

Same as yesterday. Nothing. Already sitting on about 30C. Good day for a swim perhaps.

Despite 7 months of construction, the Strand “Improvements” have still not been completed and Dee Why beachfront is still a bit of a disaster area.

Granted, it is looking better finally, but what an incredible rort of taxpayers dollars it’s been to watch what could have been a simple project, easily done in a couple of months, stretched out over 7+ months and multi-million dollars of expenditure. I’m glad the people who are managing this project aren’t running our defense operations or we’d all have been dead long ago.

Early Birthday Surf (HMB Jetty)

Posted on November 9th, 2011 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions. I'm taking Thursday off of work because it's my birthday, and had hoped for a nice, uncrowded and leisurely surf that day. But the forecast is for strong southerly winds tearing up leftover dribbles of swell, so I decided to get in my birthday surf early. If it turns out the predictions are wrong, then I'll just do it again on the right day, like Kelly Slater re-winning his 11th world title.

It was c-c-c-old this morning, only 41F/5C when I pulled into the dirt lot. Darren joined me for dawn patrol but after seeing my texted report, "Glassy WH+", Luke apparently decided to stay in his warm bed. The swell is on the fade and was inconsistent, shifty and backwashy, but there were some fun waves to be plucked from the closeouts.
Darren, first in the water
Two guys paddled out to nearby peaks partway through the session but we had the break otherwise to ourselves. A sea otter floated in the distance, the first I've seen this far north. Our breath steamed in the chilly sunlight as we waited through the lulls. Darren lauded every wave he saw me ride, making me feel a little kookish, but I'll chalk that up to it being more of a challenge for me to get into the small waves on my 7'0" than for him on his longboard. Missing the slow and fat ones, I realized I needed more critical placement, closer to the peak, but misjudged the sweet spot a few times and got rolled in water slightly warmer than the air. I rode a nice left, and a long right with a second drop that took me far along the shore, plus a few others less memorable.
I'm glad Daylight Savings Time has ended so weekday dawn patrols are again possible. There's no better way to start the day!

Surfline: WNW swell-mix backs down through the day today, as small SW swell mixes in. The tide keeps most breaks sluggish early, but expect most to improve quickly as the tide turns around. Winds are light offshore and looking to stay down/offshore through the day. Size is in the shoulder-head high+ range for good exposures, with a few lingering 2-3' overhead sets for standouts. Buoy 46012: (Wave) SWELL: 5.9 ft at 12.1 s NW 92 / WIND WAVE: 2.3 ft at 4.8 s NW / WVHT: 6.2 ft / APD: 7.3 s / MWD: 316° (Met) WSPD: 12 kts / GST: 14 kts / WVHT: 6.2 ft / DPD: 12.0 s / WDIR: 330° / ATMP: 51.8° F / WTMP: 53.1° F. Tide: under 5' rising to 5.5'.

Log Jam

Posted on November 9th, 2011 in Manly.

Waves look a little better/bigger with about 2ft of swell sucking into basically one peak at Queenscliff and another one or 2 down Manly. With another nice morning there’s a crew on it. 8am high tide isn’t helping the log jam. Nice day to be in the water.

Devil Wind, In Byron Bay Today.

Posted on November 9th, 2011 in Byron.

That’s right folks that devil wind is still upon us ripping the hopes and dreams from the salt encrusted hearts of the crew, in Byron Bay today. Yeah well so it would seem if we listened to the disgruntled few. Truth is we need this wind, that’s right you heard correctly, we need it. Sure the only spot out of the wind has not got the best banks right now. Let’s face it, working repeated closeouts for a split second of joy can try your patience, as does surfing complete howling onshore windswept rubbish. But we still need it, simple fact is we need that big lump of sand out off the cape to do an about face and push back into the bay. We need there to be more than one rideable break for summer in the bay. So I say blow wind blow, move that sand nice and slow. With a lot more wind, and just a little bit of luck, we might get more banks to disperse the summer crowds when they hit, In Byron Bay Today.
