Puff And Blow, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on December 19th, 2011 in Byron.Huey threatened us with the old grey day pissing down rain routine this morning, in Byron Bay today. But a threat was all it was it, turned out to be little more than a bit of puff and blow as a few drops fell from some dark skies that passed over briefly in the bay. It was soon over and gave way to glorious day with not too bad waves. Sure it was a little intense at times. But it is a week away from Christmas and a weekend to boot, so that’s to be expected. Bottom many crew that timed it well had a pretty good time, and so there was much rejoicing from the majority that bothered to get wet, In Byron Bay Today.
Grey skies and glassy little waves
Posted on December 18th, 2011 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,
As expected, the swell has dropped quite a bit overnight, but it’s far from flat. Coming from the SE at about 1.5 metres and with a period of 9 seconds, waves are in the chest high range along Dee Why beach and mostly a bit smaller for the healthy crew at the point. Tide was low at around 0740, so this morning should see a bit of tidal push to the swell.
However, the NE’r is due to rise soon and once that happens, it’ll be up to the north corners for the remaining scraps of swell.
Have yourself a great Sunday!

Dee Why: Smaller, slower, but cleaner today.
Posted on December 18th, 2011 in Surf Reports.Markets and stuff on at Dee Why Beach today so it’s crowded. Point has a clean small wave but it’s mostly folks on malibus at this this stage. Not a drop of wind at 9am but BOM says we’ll have 20+ knots from the NE by afternoon.
Sunday Surf
Posted on December 18th, 2011 in Manly.Surf has dropped to about 2ft at Manly. Still from the SE direction so other places will be getting more. Clean but a lot of early Sunday risers had me paddling in early. Worth a surf though before the forecast onshores
Enough Said, In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Review
Posted on December 18th, 2011 in Byron. Here’s a little thought. If we all work together in the water as a cohesive unit, and avoid taking our frustrations out on each other, there is a chance we could remedy this situation. The bay is a joyous place with an eclectic surfing community, united we stand, divided we fall. Just getting angry, frustrated and yelling rarely works. Although at times when faced with outrageous behaviour and even an outright physical assault, it’s understandable that people can and do get upset. It doesn’t make them aggressive people; it just means they can’t take the crap anymore. Bottom line we need to support each other out there, it is then and only then that things might change, enough said, In Byron Bay Today.

We have energy
Posted on December 17th, 2011 in Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
Somewhat bumpy from a light SE’r as Saturday kicked off. Tide was low at 0630 and the 2 metre swell was coming from the SE at around 11 seconds apart. That’s juicy enough to be delivering solidly overhead wave faces at Dee Why point. Our generally featureless banks are shutting down on the bigger ones and anywhere with exposure to the SE will have been bumpy from the get-go.
It’s very likely that the swell is at, or near peak size and from here on, it gradually decreases into a week of marginal – but with any luck – not totally flat conditions.
So get on it while you can!
Weather Situation
A high pressure system over the southwestern Tasman Sea is very slowly moving south-southeast maintaining a ridge to New South Wales north coast. A low pressure trough is expected to bring southerly change to the south coast later on Monday extending to the far north coast during Tuesday evening.
Forecast for Saturday until midnight
Winds
South to southeasterly 5 to 15 knots tending east to southeasterly in the afternoon.
Seas
Below 1 metre.
Swell
Southeasterly 1.5 metres.
Sunday 18 December
Winds
Easterly 5 to 10 knots tending east to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the morning then becoming northeasterly 15 to 20 knots by early evening.
Seas
Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres later in the evening.
Swell
Southeasterly about 1.5 metres.
Monday 19 December
Winds
North to northeasterly 15 to 25 knots.
Seas
1.5 to 2 metres.
Swell
Southeasterly 1 metre.
Dee Why: Some size on offer; quality still a bit sub-par.
Posted on December 17th, 2011 in Surf Reports.Half an hour ago there were 40 guys out at the Point. Down to below a dozen at the moment. Probably speaks to the quality and consistency of the situation. There is the odd set wave that looks pretty awesome but there’ a fair wait between these.
Unexpected Size for Manly
Posted on December 17th, 2011 in Manly.Swell period has jumped and angled improved so we have solid 4-5ft+ sets hitting Manly. Unfortunately there’s a SSE wind attached making things a bit bumpy but south ends are still clean and have plenty of swell getting in to them.
Not really forecasted for this much to get into Manly but great to have some swell!
Another morning with waves at south spots
Posted on December 16th, 2011 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Swell’s dropped quite a bit since yesterday morning. But it’s still close to 2 metres at sea with an average period of 9 seconds and, happily, the primary direction is more around to the SE. And that ought to open up a few more possibilities around the place.
Wind was light and out of the SW for the early. The Bureau says it’s going to swing more to the south and then SE as it picks up into the 10-15 kt range by lunch. So, the plan is obviously to get out there asap.
High tide arrives in Sydney a little before noon.
It looks as though the swell energy should stick around but gradually decrease over the next day or two. At this stage it seems likely that we’ll have waves for the weekend warriors on Saturday morning, and possibly even through to Sunday.
Have yourself a fantastic Friday!
Weather Situation
A high south of the Bight extends a ridge towards New South Wales. The high will slowly drift east during the next day or two, with a ridge strengthening along the Australian east coast and north to northeasterly winds developing along the coast over the weekend. A trough approaching from the west is expected to reach the NSW coast late Monday/Tuesday, when a southerly change will extend northwards along the southern half of the coast.
Forecast for Friday until midnight
Winds
Southerly 5 to 10 knots turning southeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the late morning.
Seas
Below 1 metre.
Swell
Southeasterly 2 metres.
Saturday 17 December
Winds
Southeasterly 5 to 10 knots tending east to northeasterly later in the evening.
Seas
Below 1 metre.
Swell
Southeasterly 1.5 metres.
Sunday 18 December
Winds
Northeasterly 10 to 15 knots increasing to 15 to 20 knots during the afternoon.
Seas
Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the afternoon.
Swell
Southeasterly about 1.5 metres.
