Dee Why: Wet and not so wild.
Posted on December 12th, 2011 in Surf Reports.11 Boogies on the Point at 1030hrs, all sitting wide and no one catching much of anything of note. S wind is on it and the swell still looking pretty E though the charts say it’s just shifted S this morning. Rising swell right now 6s interval and 2-4m but increasing on all fronts.
Models are showing a significant boost in S swell over the next day and a half and my read of the charts says we’ll get even more than the forecast is suggesting. There’s a big powerful east coast low about to form off Bass Strait and I’d say we’ll see some 3m+ waves between tomorrow and Thursday beginning SE and shifting more S later.

Wind is currently 15-20knots out of the south and will probably stay that way until about midday on Wednesday and the rain also looks to be hanging about until around Thursday. Top temperatures this entire week not expected to go beyond 25c.
Ugly Change
Posted on December 12th, 2011 in Manly.Got up for a dawn surf and it was too ugly for me 3ft of swell there but blasted but strong south wind and rain. After the weekend I just couldn’t do it. Probably something down the south end.
It Has Begun, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on December 12th, 2011 in Byron.Yes folks those over the border have indeed started their school holidays, in Byron Bay today. There were a few bemused locals wondering around looking a tad groggy from last night’s red moon and wondering where all the people had come from. Then it struck them, Queensland always starts their holidays a week before us, and so there you have it. It has begun the summer holidays are under way and there are lots of happy faces and a few grumpy ones too, In Byron Bay Today.
Swell for Sunday morning
Posted on December 11th, 2011 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
The 0820 high tide was a major player in the conditions at Dee Why this morning. The east swell picked up a little overnight and as the day got started was about two metres at sea with an average period of 10 seconds. I surfed the point yesterday and was reminded that it’s really not the best place for a wave in many east swells. There’s the odd interesting one there this morning, but the small crowd on a sunny Sunday morning after weeks of near flatness speaks eloquently.
Wind is set to be 10-15 kts from the north to north east, so take that into account in your calculations about the optimal spot for a wave.
I’m heading out for a look around shortly and I’ll fire off a tweet to my followers if I spot anything of interest.
Have yourself a great Sunday!

Weekend warriors rejoice
Posted on December 10th, 2011 in Big Picture.Hello Friends,
Swell has inched around to the east and the period range is up a touch to between 8-10 seconds. Size at sea is also slighty higher to about 1.5 metres from yesterday. It was glassy for the early risers and east spots were showing sets into the chest high range. The good news is that the swell should continue to increase across the next 24 hours. Winds are light to nothin’ early, and while it’s going to be onshore from the east to NE, the Bureau expects 5-15 kts of E to NE breezes later.
Tide hits the first high of the day at around 0745, and drops to the low at about 1425. There’s a couple metres in the swing, so there should be a noticeable change as it gets to the low.
We’re in for a shower or two through the day – so same old.
Tomorrow the coast should be partly cloudy and the swell should have picked up by the time the early risers are out hitting it. Indeed, from the shape of the swell forecast models this morning, it could be pretty solid at east swell spots.
Get out there and have fun with it!

Weather Situation
A high pressure system near New Zealand extends a ridge to New South Wales north coast. Later on Sunday the ridge will weaken and a low pressure trough will move over the southwestern Tasman Sea and deepen into a low during Monday increasing winds along the coast. Winds are expected to ease gradually during Tuesday as the low moves rapidly to the south-southeast and another high pressure system moves south of Bight extending a ridge to the north coast.
Forecast for Saturday until midnight
Winds
East to northeasterly 5 to 15 knots.
Seas
Below 1 metre.
Swell
Easterly 1.5 metres.
Sunday 11 December

Seas
Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres later in the evening.
Swell
Easterly about 2 metres.
Weather
Isolated thunderstorms during the evening.
Monday 12 December
Winds
East to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots turning southerly 15 to 20 knots during the evening and increasing to 20 to 25 knots at night.
Seas
1 to 1.5 metres.
Swell
Easterly about 1.5 metres.
Weather
Isolated thunderstorms.
Sat morning looks good
Posted on December 10th, 2011 in Manly.Looks really good for a Sat. 3ft sets with a lot of East in it so lots of place will be working. Only downer is the approaching high tide but some banks seem to be handling it. Glassy and offshore and maybe the forecast onshore won’t be so bad. Yesterday it was surfable all day. Get out there
A Patch Of Blue, In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Review.
Posted on December 10th, 2011 in Byron. The swell has been steadily building all week and reached a crescendo by swinging to the east as we cruised into the weekend. Problem is not many places are really holding it that well. Not sure how this will all pan out, this swell is putting considerable pressure on the fresh laid down and therefore fragile sand. The question is, will it shear the edge off the banks and make it perfect, or will it simply tear big holes in it. Taking us back to where we started a month ago. Hmm only time will tell. Meanwhile the sun is out, the lines are pushing past the cape and all is well, In Byron Bay Today.
Sunny Friday morning, nice!
Posted on December 9th, 2011 in Dee Why.
Hello Friends,
A shower or two clearing says the Bureau, but it was mostly sunny at around 0800. Tide was high a little after 0700 and we had a small ESE wind swell of a about a metre at sea with an average period of a touch under 9 seconds. It wasn’t exactly firing up Dee Why it has to be said though. There was a guy on a mal winkling out the odd little crumbler along the rocks at the point. Along the beach it seemed as though the alternative watercraft were outnumbering the boards. Not that there were many in. Still, as the picture shows, the bigger ones are probably into the chest high range on the faces.
That low off Queensland looks interesting, but from this morning’s run of the forecast models, it’s not projected to sling us much swell down in Sydney. The call this morning seems to be for a 2 metre-ish east pulse late Saturday into Sunday…
Have yourself a great Friday!
Weather Situation
A low off the southern Queensland coast is moving slowly towards New Zealand, while a high centred over the southern Tasman Sea extends a ridge towards New South Wales. A trough over central Australia is forecast to reach the west of the state on Saturday before continuing to coastal parts, bringing a southerly change to the coast late Sunday and Monday.
Forecast for Friday until midnight
Winds
Easterly 5 to 15 knots.
Seas
Below 1 metre.
Swell
Southeasterly 1 metre.
Saturday 10 December
Winds

Swell
Easterly about 1.5 metres.
Weather
The chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.
Sunday 11 December
Winds
North to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots.
Seas
