"Stay happy and you'll be perfectly fine" - Jack Norris

Messy morning

What a mess
Hello Friends,

My remarks yesterday about planning to share some of my very rarely seen 16mm MP footage at the crowdfunding wrap event on the 23rd seems to have sparked a few more pledges. That’s a great thing. Very stoked and really hoping that by the 23rd we’re talking about how far past the target we can get before the campaign ends at 0100 on the 24th. I have around 20 mins of MP surfing, so I have plenty to choose from to share on the night. As I said yesterday, I’m thinking of pulling a few excerpts from the fabled MP-Rabbit ’77 Stubbies semi-final heat, throwing in several waves from the first time I pointed a camera at the guy (zippery little Kirra) and a few more from the last time I saw him surf (perfect Winki during the 77 Bells). I’ll roll out some footage of PC at Dee Why point, Terry Fitz at perfect Northy and, maybe some Shaun Tomson at Burleigh…

So, how do you get a chance to see this? Well, you gotta come to Don’s Surf Party on Weds the 23 of Oct at Deck Bar in Dee Why. But before you do that, I need you to make a pledge. Then I’ll send you an invite to get your tix. They cost 25 bucks plus the usual handling fee. It’s a cover charge (rather than an additional donation) so that you can have a couple of drinks and a steady supply of gourmet pizza on the night.

We’re going to have a few custom boards for silent auction on the night and I’ve got a musician lined up. Tim Bonython’s going to show some fresh teaser footage from his upcoming ASMF and ABC 702’s Simon Marnie will take on MC duties.

We don’t have unlimited space, so if you’re keen, I’d be acting on this now. The 100+ people who’ve pledged already have their invites, so there’s no way to guarantee you’ll get in if you leave it to the last second. 🙂

Ok… enough of that for now…

Surf situation has improved in terms of the size, but that’s about it. Swell is a couple of metres from the south, but it’s only 7-8 seconds apart and very raw with it. Plus, the morning has started out with gloomy grey skies and periodic showers. Wind wasn’t helping either. After waking thousands of Sydneysiders when it arrived late last night, it was coming from the S-SSE at 10-20kts. That’s in line with the forecast, so we can expect it to go around to the N-NE later this afternoon. The showers should have abated by the time we get to high tide at 1250.

My hunch is that the best shot at reasonable conditions could be after the high tide. With luck the scrappy and scruffy look will have improved a little after lunch. After the tide turns, I’m hoping there might be a reason to get away from the desk…

Here’s hoping there are still a few little bumps around tomorrow morning for all of you who don’t have the option of ducking out for a sesh today.

Go well and stay happy!
