Postcard from Cali: better in Sydney

Hello Friends,

Sydney looks like kinda lumpy waist to chest high as the day got started. Wind was light N-NW early, but’ll go NE later. Scrappy south swell was still hanging in there, but the Bureau says it’s gonna fade as the day goes along and the wind comes up. First low tide is 0715, so the morning looks like being the best shot. Gonna be warm later too. Next couple days look like more marginal prospects for Sydney – but not direly flat like in SoCal atm – with another south pulse in prospect for late in the weekend.

Warm and sunny in Santa Barbara today too. But we don’t have any wind and there’s only a tiny 9-10 s west wind swell. Every 15-20 minutes there was a barely surfable waist high lump at The Pit (Arroyo Burro beach where I had brekkie). It was a hair bigger just south of there at Mesa Lane (see pic) but the massive morning tide was swamping any hope of a catchable bump. Plan to look later for the late – just in case.

Have a great day and hope you get a few waves!

Weather Situation

A high pressure system over the Tasman Sea will direct northeast winds over most of the coast today. A weak southerly change will affect the south coast later in the day as a low pressure trough forms in the vicinity. During Friday the trough will weaken and the high will strengthen over the Tasman Sea as a cold front approaches from the southwest, with northeasterly winds strengthening over coastal waters between the high and the front. The front will move through southern and central waters on Saturday with fresh to strong northeast to northwest winds before a southerly change extends from the south. The change should move through the northeast on Sunday morning with south to southeast winds extending throughout.
